This systematic review evaluated the knowledge and awareness of peripheral artery disease (PAD) within the general public (including patients with peripheral vascular disease), nonspecialist healthcare professionals (nsHCP), and trainees (medical students and trainee doctors). The eclipse of the State Career in the SUS: diffusion of managerial theories and the Brazilian Health Reform Program.

The historical submersion of the State Career Plan agenda within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) is directly linked to the diffusion of managerial principles structured by New Public Management. This article aims to document the theoretical reasons and practical effects of the weakening of labour rights in the construction of SUS. Drawing on data related to the process of precarious labour relations and outsourcing, as well as the increasing municipalization of health management, we identify three key areas where labour management is central to the historical challenges faced by SUS:

Factors hindering midwives' utilisation of alternative birth positions during labour in a selected public hospital.

BACKGROUND: An evidence-based practice suggests that the birth position adopted by women during labour has a significant impact on the maternal and neonatal birth outcomes. The birth positions are endorsed by guidelines of maternity care in South Africa, which documented that women in labour should be allowed to select the birth position of their choice, preferably alternative birth positions (including upright, kneeling, squatting and lateral positions) during labour. Thus, the lithotomy birth position should be avoided. However, despite available literature, midwives routinely position women

Integrating Endocrine, Genomic, and Extra-Skeletal Benefits of Vitamin D into National and Regional Clinical Guidelines.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D is essential for bone health, immune function, and overall well-being. Numerous ecological, observational, and prospective studies, including randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs), report an inverse association between higher serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D; calcifediol] levels in various conditions, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity, susceptibility to infection-related complications, autoimmune diseases, and all-cause mortality. RESULTS: Vitamin D operates through two distinct systems. The endocrine s

Barriers to evidence-based decision making in public health: a national survey of chronic disease practitioners.

OBJECTIVE: Existing knowledge of evidence-based chronic disease prevention is not systematically disseminated or applied. This study investigated state and territorial chronic disease practitioners' self-reported barriers to evidence-based decision making (EBDM). METHODS: In a nationwide survey, participants indicated the extent to which they agreed with statements reflecting four personal and five organizational barriers to EBDM. Responses were measured on a Likert scale from 0 to 10, with higher scores indicating a larger barrier to EBDM. We analyzed mean levels of barriers and calculated a

What does the general public in the UK know about the risk to a developing foetus if exposed to alcohol in pregnancy? Findings from a UK mixed methodology study.

INTRODUCTION: Foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are a set of preventable conditions where the foetus is exposed to alcohol in utero and as a result suffers adverse consequences. To develop a public health strategy related to FASD, it is important to first establish what is known by the public about this condition. This study aimed to assess the current level of knowledge about FASD in the UK general population. METHODS: A mixed methodology study was conducted using a 17-item questionnaire and focus group sessions. Four focus groups were held with an average of 10 people in each group.

Hand washing behavior and associated factors in Vietnam based on the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, 2010-2011.

BACKGROUND: Handwashing is a cost-effective way of preventing communicable diseases such as respiratory and food-borne illnesses. However, handwashing rates are low in developing countries. Target 7C of the seventh Millennium Development Goals was to increase by half the proportion of people with sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015. Studies have found that better access to improved water sources and sanitation is associated with higher rates of handwashing. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to describe handwashing behaviour and identify the associated factors in Vietn

Application of PHEL (Public Health Epidemiological Logic) in devising a vaccination policy: a broad public health criteria-for routine Immunization.

There is a need to develop clear cut public health criteria for consideration of new vaccines for use in public health. Most of the vaccines which have become recently available or will soon be available are mostly recommended for use in clinical/office practice. A new vaccine that is highly recommended for use in clinical setting may not be effective at all for larger public health use or may even lack rationale to put it in use for public health. It is stressed that a new vaccine which is proven to be good clinical tool for preventing particular disease at individual level need not necessari

"Fewer children, better life" or "as many as God wants"? Family planning among low-income Iranian and Afghan refugee families in Isfahan, Iran.

In the West it is often assumed that religion (esp. Islam) and contraception are mutually exclusive. Yet, the Islamic Republic of Iran has one of the most successful family-planning programs in the developing world, and is often looked to as a potential model for other Muslim countries. Although Iran's family-planning program has been extremely successful among Iranians, it has been far less successful among Afghan refugees and other ethnic groups. Afghans and Iranians both seek services in Iran's public health sector for family health care, treatment of infectious disease, and childhood vacci

Successes and problems in family planning administration: experiences in two districts of Kerala, India.

The administrative organizations of the Ernakulam and Malappuram Districts' family planning programs during 1970-74 and the ways they dealt with typical problems of program organization are examined. Lack of personnel, poor staff morale, inadequate supplies, and political and religious opposition to various contraceptive methods, especially sterilization, existed to varying degrees in both districts' programs. The Ernakulam experience, involving mass sterilization camps that were part of an overall district development program, documents the effectiveness of a strong central leader. The Malapp
