Limited restoration of visual function after partial optic nerve injury; a time course study using the calcium channel blocker lomerizine.

Secondary degeneration is a process encompassing damage adjacent to a primary injury, usually involving increased Ca(2+) influx into neurons and glia. Lomerizine dihydrochloride is a calcium channel blocker with relatively selective CNS effects, currently in clinical trials for glaucoma. We have recently demonstrated that, following partial transection of the optic nerve (ON), 1 month of lomerizine treatment protects retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), incompletely preserves visual function and also limits elements of secondary degeneration, including macrophage infiltration. However, under some ci

[What's behind cerebellar dizziness? - News on diagnosis and therapy].

Vertigo and dizziness comprise a multisensory and multidisciplinary syndrome of different etiologies. The term "cerebellar vertigo and dizziness" comprises a heterogenous group of disorders with clinical signs of cerebellar dysfunction and is caused by vestibulo-cerebellar, vestibulo-spinal or cerebellar systems. About 10 % of patients in an outpatient clinic for vertigo and balance disorders suffer from cerebellar vertigo and dizziness. According to the course of the symptoms, one can considers 3 types: permanent complaints, recurrent episodes of vertigo and balance disorders, or an acute ons

Approach to Quantify Eye Movements to Augment Stroke Diagnosis With a Non-Calibrated Eye-Tracker.

UNLABELLED: Automated eye-tracking technology could enhance diagnosis for many neurological diseases, including stroke. Current literature focuses on gaze estimation through a form of calibration. However, patients with neuro-ocular abnormalities may have difficulty completing a calibration procedure due to inattention or other neurological deficits. OBJECTIVE: We investigated 1) the need for calibration to measure eye movement symmetry in healthy controls and 2) the potential of eye movement symmetry to distinguish between healthy controls and patients. METHODS: We analyzed fixations, smoot

Clinical Application of the Vestibular Stimulation Effect on Balance Disorders with Dementia.

BACKGROUND: In a previous study on Alzheimer's disease (AD), we showed that vestibular dysfunction derived from cerebral disorders contributes to balance disorders. No previous clinical study has attempted to prevent the progression of balance disorders in dementia patients through vestibular stimulation using an air caloric device. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this pilot study was to delay the progression of balance disorders by inducing vestibular compensation, specifically by utilizing the effect of vestibular stimulation to activate the cerebrum. METHODS: Fifteen individuals were randomized

There is no evidence of cochlear and vestibular melanocyte damage in patients with alopecia areata.

PURPOSE: Follicular melanocytes are known to be damaged in alopecia areata (AA). However, it is not clear whether melanocytes are the primary target of autoimmunity and whether melanocytes in the inner ear are affected. This study aimed to detect possible cochlear and/or vestibular melanocyte damage in AA patients. METHODS: Thirty-two AA patients and 35 sex- and age-matched healthy volunteers were evaluated between November 2018 and March 2020 at the Karabük University Training and Research Hospital. The conventional pure tone audiometry test and distortion product otoacoustic emission test w

Reliability of the visio-vestibular examination for concussion among providers in a pediatric emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Visio-vestibular examination (VVE) deficits are common following pediatric concussion. Guidelines recommend assessing these deficits on all potentially concussed youth given their diagnostic and prognostic value, however test psychometrics of the VVE in the emergency department (ED) setting are unknown. Our objective was to determine the inter-rater (IRR) and test-retest reliability (TRR) of the VVE in a pediatric ED. METHODS: We enrolled 155 patients (112 IRR; 43 TRR) age 6-18 years with head injury presenting to the ED of a tertiary care children's hospital. Exams were performed

Vestibular Screening in Pediatric Patients with Otitis Media.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common cause of vestibular disturbances in children. However, young children often lack the language to express their symptoms, and it is uncommon to screen children for vestibular impairments. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a screening protocol for children presenting with OME to determine if diagnostic vestibular testing is necessary. RESEARCH DESIGN: Children with normal hearing (NH), sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), and conductive hearing loss (CHL) due to OME participated in a vestibular screening. STUDY SAMPLE: The

Isolated Vestibular Suppression Impairment With Vestibular Migraine: A Phenotypic CANVAS Variant.

HYPOTHESIS: Cerebellar Ataxia with Neuropathy and Vestibular Areflexia (CANVAS) is likely to have a genetic basis. We describe the unique eye movement features of a possible phenotypic CANVAS variant. BACKGROUND: The patient comes from a large CANVAS kindred (four out of nine siblings) and has sensory neuropathy, cerebellar eye signs, and vestibular migraine (VM), but otherwise normal vestibular function. METHODS: We recorded eye and head movements using the gold standard scleral search coil technique: in the patient, a close relative with mild sensory neuropathy, and a normal control. RESU

The Formulation and Evaluation of Melaleuca alternifolia Cheel and Cymbopogon flexuosus Linn Essential Oils Emulgel for the Treatment of Vulvovaginal Candidiasis.

The global concern regarding the occurrence of antifungal resistance to synthetic conventional azoles used for treating vulvovaginal candidiasis, along with the associated side effects, is significant. Consequently, the pursuit for substitutes such as natural therapies has ensued. Essential oils, derived from plants, have been extensively researched and found to possess antibacterial and antifungal properties. This study aimed to assess the antifungal efficacy of two essential oils, both alone and in combination, against Candida albicans. Essential oils were formulated into an emulgel separate

Oculocentric frames of reference for limb movement.

We have reviewed evidence that suggests that the target for limb motion is encoded in a retinocentric frame of reference. Errors in pointing that are elicited by an illusion that distorts the perceived motion of a target are strongly correlated with errors in gaze position. The modulations in the direction and speed of ocular smooth pursuit and of the hand show remarkable similarities, even though the inertia of the arm is much larger than that of the eye. We have suggested that ocular motion is constrained so that gaze provides an appropriate target signal for the hand. Finally, ocular and ma

Freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease is improved by treatment with weak electromagnetic fields.

Freezing, a symptom characterized by difficulty in the initiation and smooth pursuit of repetitive movements, is a unique and well known clinical feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). It usually occurs in patients with long duration and advanced stage of the disease and is a major cause of disability often resulting in falling. In PD patients freezing manifests most commonly as a sudden attack of immobility usually experienced during walking, attempts to turn while walking, or while approaching a destination. Less commonly it is expressed as arrest of speech or handwriting. The pathophysiology

The involvement of the fronto-parietal brain network in oculomotor sequence learning using fMRI.

The basis of motor learning involves decomposing complete actions into a series of predictive individual components that form the whole. The present fMRI study investigated the areas of the human brain important for oculomotor short-term learning, by using a novel sequence learning paradigm that is equivalent in visual and temporal properties for both saccades and pursuit, enabling more direct comparisons between the oculomotor subsystems. In contrast with previous studies that have implemented a series of discrete ramps to observe predictive behaviour as evidence for learning, we presented a

The BAsic NeuroCognitive Continuum (BANCC): Delineation of dimensional and categorical features for etiological and treatment investigations of idiopathic psychosis.

AIM: Cognition varies across people with psychosis, including within a specific diagnosis. An important issue is identifying psychosis-specific neuro-cognitive dysfunctions. We addressed this issue by studying patterns of relationships between cognition and multiple other measures in persons with psychosis, their first-degree biological relatives, and healthy individuals (largest possible n = 2826). METHODS: Brief Assessment of Cognition and Wide Range Achievement Test estimated cognitive performance. Neuroanatomical measures were FreeSurfer parcellations of 3T MRI structural brain scans. Bra
