A sensitive anodic near-infrared electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor for the detection of tetracycline, based on Cu-doped CdTe quantum dots, was fabricated for the first time in this work. We have synthesized Cu-doped CdTe quantum dots by co-precipitation. The emission spectrum of the Cu-doped CdTe quantum dots could reach the near-infrared region at 730 nm in a short reflux time. More importantly, the ECL intensity of the CdTe quantum dots was enhanced by 2 fold after Cu element doping, which was attributed to the Cu d-orbital mixed with the conduction band and valence band of the hos…

A dual recognition system with a fluorescence quenching of quantum dots (QDs) and specific recognition of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for the detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) was constructed. MIP@SiO2@QDs was prepared by reverse microemulsion method with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS), tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and QDs being used as the functional monomer, cross-linker and signal sources, respectively. MIP can specifically recognize CAP, and the fluorescence of QDs can be quenched by CAP due to the photo-induced electron transfer reaction between CAP and QDs. Thus, a metho…

Peroxynitrite (ONOO-), a highly reactive nitrogen species (RNS) generated mainly in mitochondria, has been identified to be associated with numerous pathophysiological processes, and thus accurate ONOO- imaging with superior sensitivity and selectivity is highly desirable. Herein, we prepared a new type of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with mitochondria-targeting function without the aid of any targeting molecules via a simple one-step hydrothermal route. The as-prepared CQDs not only displayed relatively uniform size distribution, few surface defects, high photostability, and excellent biocompat…

Superoxide dismutase (SOD), also known as liver protein, is a substance widely distributed in various biological cells. It has the function of catalyzing the disproportionation reaction of superoxide free radicals. SOD can form an antioxidant chain together with peroxidase, catalase, and other substances in the body of organisms, and thus, is one of the indispensable important substances in the body of organisms. In this work, we provided a simple and fast visual electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for SOD detection. CuInZnS quantum dots (QDs) worked as the ECL luminophore with hydrogen pero…

Biocompatibility, biofunctionality, and chemical stability are essential criteria to be fulfilled by quantum dot (QD) emitters for bio-imaging and -sensing applications. In addition to these criteria, achieving efficient near-infrared (NIR) emission with nontoxic QDs remains very challenging. In this perspective, we developed water-soluble NIR-emitting AgInS2/ZnS core/shell (AIS/ZnS) QDs functionalized with DNA. The newly established aqueous route relying on a two-step hot-injection synthesis led to highly luminescent chalcopyrite-type AIS/ZnS core/shell QDs with an unprecedented photoluminesc

A new fluorescence turn-on sensing platform has been developed applicable for sensitive profiling of multiple chemical and biological analytes, using azobenzene-quantum dot as a new stimuli-responsive optical nanoprobe. An azobenzene-carrying compound bis [4, 4'-(dithiophenyl azo)-1, 3-benzenediamine] (DTPABDA) is for the first time reported to be used for conjugation with CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) via the ligand exchange reaction. Due to the photo-induced electron-transfer (PET) effect, the electron-withdrawing azobenzene groups of DTPABDA can significantly cause the photolumines…

In recent years quantum dots (QDs) have risen as useful luminescent nanoparticles with multiple applications ranging from laser, image displays and biomedical applications. Here we review and discuss the studies of these nanoparticles in patient derived cellular samples or tissues, including cellular models from iPSCs from patients, biopsied and post-mortem tissue. QD-based multiplexed imaging has been proved to overcome most of the major drawbacks of conventional techniques, exhibiting higher sensitivity, reliability, accuracy and simultaneous labeling of key biomarkers. In this sense, QDs ar…

D-penicillamine (D-PA) plays an important role in medical and clinical treatment of some diseases. In this work, we designed a sensitive fluorometric and colorimetric dual-mode assay on the basis of fluorescent silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) and 5,5-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) to effectively detect D-PA. The sulfydryl group (-SH) of D-PA can react with DTNB to generate 5-thio-2-nitrobenzoate (TNB), which has a broad absorption peak centered at 407 nm and is capable to absorb excitation light of SiQDs and greatly quench the fluorescence of SiQDs on account of inner filter effect (IFE).…

Quantum dots (QDs) possess optical properties of superbright fluorescence, excellent photostability, narrow emission spectra, and optional colors. Labeled with QDs, single molecules/viruses can be rapidly and continuously imaged for a long time, providing more detailed information than when labeled with other fluorophores. While they are widely used to label proteins in single-molecule-tracking studies, QDs have rarely been used to study virus infection, mainly due to a lack of accepted labeling strategies. Here, we report a general method to mildly and readily label enveloped viruses with QDs…

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) possess outstanding optical properties as fluorescent probes, but their applications in live cell intracellular imaging are hindered by various cellular transport barriers. Inspired by membrane proteins inserting their nanometer-scale hydrophobic surface into biomembranes, the present work aims to investigate the possibility that bare hydrophobic QDs could penetrate through live cell membranes without disrupting the membrane integrity. We utilize live cell spinning disk confocal microscopy to image and track the cellular transport process of bare hydrophobic QD…

Cadmium (Cd)-based QDs are well studied owing to their excellent optical properties. The applications of Cd-based QDs in biomedical filed, however, is hindered by its inherent toxicity. In this study, to overcome the inherent toxicity of heavy metals, CdTe QDs were encapsulated with different shells (NAC, MPA and GSH) to reduce the leakage of Cd from the core. We studied the cytotoxicity of the three kinds of CdTe QDs on S. cerevisiae by spectroscopic, electrochemical, microscopic methods and microcalorimetric technique. Results showed that toxicity of CdTe QDs increased with the augment of QD

Quantum dots increasingly gain popularity for in vivo applications. However, their delivery and accumulation into cells can be challenging and there is still lack of detailed information. Thereby, the application of advanced fluorescence techniques can expand the portfolio of useful parameters for a more comprehensive evaluation. Here, we encapsulated hydrophilic quantum dots into liposomes for studying cellular uptake of these so-called lipodots into living cells. First, we investigated photophysical properties of free quantum dots and lipodots observing changes in the fluorescence decay time…

Quantum Dots (QDs) are becoming more prevalent in products used in our daily lives, such as TVs and laptops, due to their unique and tunable optical properties. The possibility of using QDs as fluorescent probes in applications, such as medical imaging, has been a topic of interest for some time, but their potential toxicity and long-term effects on the environment are not well understood. In the present study, we investigated the effects of yellow CdSe/ZnS-QDs on Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We utilized growth assays, RNA-seq, reactive oxygen species (ROS) detection assays, and cell wall stabili…

The interactions between adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette (ABC) transporters and nano-sized materials are attracting increasing attention, due to their great potential in overcoming the multidrug resistance (MDR) phenomena in cancer treatment. However, the inner mechanisms involved in the interactions are largely unknown. In this study, two commercial quantum dots (QDs), CdSe/ZnS-MPA and CdSe/ZnS-GSH, were tested for their interactions with P-glycoprotein (P-gp), as well as the relating mechanisms in lung cancer (A549) cells. Both QDs significantly suppressed the gene and protein expres…

A non-enzymatic fluorometric assay is described for the determination of glucose. The method is based on the use of g-C3N4 quantum dots (QDs) that have good water solubility. The QDs were synthesized by a one-step solvothermal process using formamide as precursor. The QDs possess an average size of ~5 nm, a band gap of 3.0~3.5 eV, and strong blue fluorescence (with excitation/emission maxima at 400/447 nm). Fluorescence is quenched by glucose (which acts as the electron acceptor) via an electron transfer mechanism. Comprehensive spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations show that…

In the design of new fluorescent sensors, exploration of new materials with excellent properties and smart designs is of continuing interest. Herein, we designed a dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent sensor by doping ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with Cu2+ and Mn2+ ions. The codoped ZnS QDs with two separated dopant emissions were used as ratiometric fluorescent sensors for folic acid (FA). With addition of FA, the Cu dopant emission was quenched while the Mn dopant emission was enhanced. The fluorescence intensity ratios versus the FA concentrations could be fitted to a linear regression equation …

Quantum dots (QDs) have significant potentials in biomedical applications of bioimaging and biosensing. Spontaneous adsorption of proteins on QDs surface is a common phenomenon, which occurred to serum proteins in biological samples, and has been observed to enhance QDs fluorescence. In this study, fluorescence alteration of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) capped CdSe quantum dots by four individual biomarker proteins was investigated. By monitoring the fluorescence emission of QDs, the biomarker protein adsorbed spontaneously on QDs surface was recognized and quantified. When alpha fetoprotein…
