[History of the radiation damage in occupations].

In the year following Röntgen`s discovery of X-rays in 1895, approximately 60 cases of hand dermatitis and hair loss induced by radiation were reported. People using X-rays in their occupation, including X-ray tube manufacturers, physicians, and engineers, experienced chronic radiation dermatitis and were the first to be diagnosed with occupational radiation exposure. Reports of later appearing disorders, including skin cancer, suffered by doctors and engineers, were regarded as serious occupational diseases. In the 1910's, blood disorders, including leukemia, in people with occupational expos…

Effect of infrared radiation on the lens.

BACKGROUND: Infrared (IR) radiation is becoming more popular in industrial manufacturing processes and in many instruments used for diagnostic and therapeutic application to the human eye. AIM: The present study was designed to investigate the effect of IR radiation on rabbit's crystalline lens and lens membrane. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen New Zealand rabbits were used in the present work. The rabbits were classified into three groups; one of them served as control. The other two groups were exposed to IR radiation for 5 or 10 minutes. Animals from these two irradiated groups were subdiv…

Ultraviolet radiation and the anterior eye.

The eye is on the one hand dependent on visible light energy and on the other hand can be damaged by these and the contiguous ultraviolet (UV) and infrared wavelengths. Diseases of the eye in which sunlight has been implicated have been termed the ophthalmohelioses, and these conditions pose a significant problem to the eye health of many communities. The ophthalmohelioses have a tremendous impact on patients' quality of life and have significant implications on the cost of health care. Although cataract is not entirely caused by insolation, it now seems certain that sunlight plays a contribut

Biodosimetry and assessment of radiation dose.

AIM: When investigating radiation accidents, it is very important to determine the exposition dose to the individuals. In the case of exposures over 1 Gy, clinicians may expect deterministic effects arising the following weeks and months, in these cases dose estimation will help physicians in the planning of therapy. Nevertheless, for doses below 1 Gy, biodosimetry data are important due to the risk of developing late stochastic effects. Finally, some accidental overexposures are lack of physical measurements and the only way of quantifying dose is by biological dosimetry. BACKGROUND: The ana…

Radiation recall with vinorelbine and cisplatin.

BACKGROUND: Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) is an inflammatory skin reaction in a previously irradiated field in response to certain pharmacological agents. Little is known about the potential risk of RRD in response to the use of vinorelbine and cisplatin. CASE REPORT: Herein, we report a case of RRD following the combination treatment of vinorelbine and cisplatin in a lung cancer patient with lymph node metastasis. We describe the timing and doses of radiation exposure and chemotherapy, the features of the skin reactions, the clinical management, and the outcome. We also review previous r…

Risk of radiation and choice of imaging.

Radiological imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis and management of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The barium or contrast techniques enteroclysis (SBE) and small bowel follow through (SBFT) are still the mainstays in small bowel imaging. However, abdominal CT and MRI, including enteroclysis, have comparable sensitivity and specificity in detecting intestinal pathologies and have gained in popularity over conventional techniques. The cancer risk associated with diagnostic procedures employing radiation has been receiving increasing attention over the last few years…

Radiation-induced leiomyosarcoma of the oropharynx.

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor originating from smooth muscle cells, which most frequently develops in the myometrium and in the gastro-intestinal tract. Reviewing the international literature, radiation-induced sarcoma arise in 0.035 to 0.2% of all irradiated patients. Especially in the head and neck region, radiation-induced leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare lesion. The authors report a case of a radiation-induced leiomyosarcoma of the tonsillar region of the oropharynx in a 51-year-old male patient, who had undergone radiation therapy of this region 38 years before. The l…

Radiation as a nervous system toxin.

Neurotoxicity from radiation can range widely and produce effects that may include (1) small absolute increases in cancer risks, (2) subtle effects on higher level functioning in some individuals, (3) severe cognitive impairment in some individuals, (4) severe focal injury tat may include necrosis or irreversible loss of function, and (5) overwhelming and rapidly fatal diffuse injury associated with high-dose, whole-body exposures. An understanding of the implications of nervous system exposure to radiation can guide efforts in radiation protection and aid in the optimization of the medical us…

OBJECTIVE: To describe a region of hyperechoic white matter adjacent to the atrium of the lateral ventricle of preterms, and to speculate on … 0.789 (n = 17) at 31 wk. Location of the PAROI agrees with the angle of the upper loop of the optic radiation. None of the nine infants with white matter damage had PAROIs clearly distinguishable from flaring. CONCLUSION: The symmetrical and unchanged acoustic character between 26 and 31 wk of gestational age argues in favour of the hypothesis that the PAR …

[Reactions of the skin to solar radiation].

When spending time out of doors in summer, certain rules of behavior need to be observed. Environmental factors such as, for example, water, the beach and the midday sun all have a major influence on the UV radiation burden to which people may be subjected. In addition, the sun's rays can interact with certain medications, alcohol and drugs, as also cosmetics, and trigger pathological skin reactions. A permanently sun-damaged skin is not only very difficult to treat, but is also frequently associated with malignant changes. Moderate exposure to the sun after prior gradual acclimatization is to…

Treatment of paragangliomas with radiation therapy.

Paragangliomas of the head and neck may be treated successfully with surgery, radiation therapy, or stereotactic radiosurgery. The choice of treatment depends on the location and extent of the tumor, the presence of multiple tumors, the age and health of the patient, and the preference of the patient and attending physician. This article reviews the role of radiation therapy in the treatment of patients with paragangliomas of the head and neck.

Radiation exposure in the myelomeningocele population.

Radiation-induced carcinoma is known to occur with lower doses of radiation exposure than previously recognized. The myelomeningocele population, because of its complex medical problems, is exposed to relatively high doses of radiation from diagnostic radiographs performed throughout their lives. To quantify the amount of exposure, we have calculated the total lifetime radiographic exposure for patients in a myelomeningocele clinic. Out of a myelomeningocele clinic of 248 patients, 112 were identified who had been followed in the clinic since birth. A retrospective history of radiographic expo…

An immunohistochemical analysis of radiation fibroblasts.

A commonly recognized feature of chronic radiation dermatitis is the presence of mesenchymal cells with large atypical nuclei known as radiation fibroblasts. Little is known about their lineage or potential for neoplastic transformation. To investigate these properties, we examined 16 biopsy specimens in which radiation fibroblasts were present with antisera to mesenchymal determinants (FXIIIa, CD34, HHF-35), a proliferation marker (Ki-67), and a tumor-suppressor protein that is overexpressed in many cancers (p53). Radiation fibroblasts were largely negative for the markers of lineage that we …

Lisofylline as a modifier of radiation therapy.

Lisofylline is a new methylxanthine. The potential of lisofylline to enhance the response to ionizing radiation of the EMT-6 murine mammary carcinoma in vitro and in vivo was assessed and compared with pentoxifylline. Addition of lisofylline (100 microM) or pentoxifylline (100 microM) from the time of radiation exposure and throughout the time of colony formation did not alter the response of normally oxygenated EMT-6 cells to gamma-radiation delivered at 0.76 Gy/min or 12.3 Gy/min. The dose modifying factor for hypoxic EMT-6 cells by lisofylline or pentoxifylline and radiation delivered at 0.…
