Absorbed doses from spiral CT and conventional spiral tomography: a phantom vs. cadaver study.

For several radiological examinations, a clinician can select between conventional and spiral computed tomography. Using both techniques, this study aimed at evaluating the difference in absorbed doses when examining a single lateral jaw segment in a human cadaver head and Rando phantom. The present study involved the placement of thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) chips (GR-200) in the thyroid gland, and bilaterally, in the parotid and submandibular glands and the lenses of the eyes in both a human cadaver and a Rando phantom at corresponding locations. Consecutive conventional spiral tomograp

Dosimetry and risk estimates of radioiodine therapy for large, multinodular goiters.

UNLABELLED: In patients with a large, multinodular goiter (> 100 g), radiation absorbed doses in the thyroid, surrounding tissues and remainder of the body were estimated after therapeutic administration of 131I(3.7 MBq or 100 microCi/g of thyroid tissue retained at 24 hr). METHODS: Thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) measurements were performed on 23 patients (12 euthyroid and 1I hyperthyroid; thyroid weight 222 +/- 72 g; 2.1 +/- 0.9 GBq 131I) on the skin over the thyroid, over the submandibular gland and over the parotid gland. Thyroid radioactivity measurements were done daily in 6 euthyroid

High dose rate brachytherapy for prevention of restenosis after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty: preliminary dosimetric tests of a new source presentation.

PURPOSE: Balloon dilatation of coronary artery stenosis has become a standard treatment of atherosclerotic heart disease. Restenosis due to excessive intimal cell proliferation, which subsequently occurs in 20-50% of patients, represents one of the major clinical problems in contemporary cardiology, and no satisfactory method for its prevention has thus far been found. Because modest doses of radiation have proved effective in preventing certain types of abnormal cellular proliferation resulting from surgical trauma, and brachytherapy has already been used successfully after dilation of periph

Using LiF:Mg,Cu,P TLDs to estimate the absorbed dose to water in liquid water around an 192Ir brachytherapy source.

PURPOSE: The absorbed dose to water is the fundamental reference quantity for brachytherapy treatment planning systems and thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs) have been recognized as the most validated detectors for measurement of such a dosimetric descriptor. The detector response in a wide energy spectrum as that of an (192)Ir brachytherapy source as well as the specific measurement medium which surrounds the TLD need to be accounted for when estimating the absorbed dose. This paper develops a methodology based on highly sensitive LiF:Mg,Cu,P TLDs to directly estimate the absorbed dose to w

PHITS Monte Carlo zoning and workplace studies of medical radiographic rooms.

The commissioning of a new radiological facility or practice requires a comprehensive process for shielding design and verification process. Traditionally, shielding design has relied on deterministic methods, such as those described in NCRP Report No. 147, and Monte Carlo codes, whereas verification has been performed using dosimeters and survey meters. Although deterministic methods remain the conventional approach, Monte Carlo simulations enable more detailed assessments of complex geometries and three-dimensional (3D) dose distributions. In this study, a Monte Carlo model based on the Part

An investigation of a novel reusable radiochromic sheet for 2D dose measurement.

PURPOSE: Radiochromic film remains a useful and versatile clinical dosimetry tool. Current film options are single use. Here, we introduce a novel prototype two-dimensional (2D) radiochromic sheet, which optically clears naturally at room temperature after irradiation and can be reused. We evaluate the sheets for potential as a 2D dosimeter and as a radiochromic bolus with capability for dose measurement. METHODS: A novel derivative of reusable Presage® was manufactured into thin sheets of 5 mm thickness. The sheets contained 2% cumin-leucomalachitegreen-diethylamine (LMG-DEA) and plasticizer

Occupational exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation among outdoor workers in Lisbon, 2023-first results of the MEAOW study.

INTRODUCTION: Solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is the primary external factor associated with the development of skin cancer. Accurate, valid, and reliable objective estimates of individual UVR exposure are required to quantify the risk of skin cancer in outdoor workers. Such data can be used to develop and implement policies and practices to reduce, or at least manage, UVR exposure in outdoor workers. Currently, there is a dearth of objective exposure data for many countries. Lisbon, as a low-mid-latitude region (38°46' N), experiences a high UV Index (UVI) for a long period of the

A dynamic anthropomorphic phantom for end-to-end testing in image- and surface-guided adaptive radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory and digestive motion can compromise the accuracy of radiotherapy (RT), affecting tumor targeting and healthy tissue sparing. Current phantoms often fail to replicate complex organ movements and lack compatibility with advanced imaging modalities like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 4D computed tomography (4DCT), limiting their utility in adaptive radiotherapy. The BRaVIDA (Breathing Radiotherapy Visual monitoring, Imaging, and Dosimetric Anthropomorphic) phantom addresses these limitations by simulating realistic organ motion during breathing and digestion. Its MRI

Mobile Phone Radiation: Physiological & Pathophysiologcal Considerations.

It is documented that electromagnetic emissions from mobile phones can interfere with brain's signal processing activity due to their oscillatory similitude to the inherent rhythms of the brain, akin to "electromagnetic interference" observed while using mobile phones in aeroplanes. At high power density levels, thermal effects occur, some of which can be attributed to heat induced stress mechanisms. The less understood non-thermal effects occur at low radio frequency/microwave power density levels and are not accompanied by any body temperature rise. The safety standards set by international

Evaluation of surface and superficial dose for head and neck treatments using conventional or intensity-modulated techniques.

With increased use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for head and neck treatment questions have arisen as to selection of an optimum treatment approach when either superficial sparing or treatment is desired. Other work has pointed out the increased superficial dose resulting from obliquity effects when multiple tangential beams are applied to head and neck treatment, as is the general case in IMRT planning. Helical tomotherapy might be expected to result in even further enhanced superficial dose compared with conventional bilateral field treatment. We have designed a typical rig

Hybrid Multilayer Epoxy Composites Filled with Mixed-Phase Bismuth- and Tungsten-Containing Nanoparticles for Lead-Free 99mTc Shielding in Occupational Nuclear Medicine.

Lead-free polymer composites are being developed to reduce occupational radiation exposure associated with nuclear medicine procedures. This study fabricated monolithic and four-layer hybrid Bi2O3/WO3 nanoparticle-filled diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A epoxy composites for attenuating the 140.5-keV photons emitted by technetium-99m (99mTc). Bi- and W-containing powders were prepared by wet-chemical precipitation and incorporated into the epoxy matrix at 25 and 50 parts per hundred parts of resin. Alternating B50/W50/B50/W50 (ML-BW50) and reverse-layer configurations were produced by sequential

Out-of-field dosimetry using a validated PHITS model and computational phantom in clinical BNCT.

BACKGROUND: The out-of-field radiation dose for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), which results from both neutrons and γ-rays, has not been extensively evaluated. To safely perform BNCT, the neutron and γ-ray distributions inside the treatment room and the whole-body dose should be evaluated during commissioning. Although, certain previous studies have evaluated the whole-body dose in the clinical research phase, no institution providing BNCT covered by health insurance has yet validated the neutron distribution inside the room and the whole-body dose. PURPOSE: To validate the Monte Carlo

Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Multiple Myeloma Mortality in the Russian Mayak Worker Cohort 1948-2015.

Increased leukemia incidence or mortality is a well-known effect of acute radiation exposure. Less is known about the risks associated with protracted exposure, such as those arising in occupational exposure settings. We used excess relative risk models to investigate the strength of evidence for and the shape of the dose response for mortality from leukemia (excluding chronic lymphocytic leukemia, CLL) in the Russian Mayak Worker Cohort. The cohort includes 25,757 workers followed for cancer mortality from 1948 to 2015 who were subject to both external low-dose-rate gamma ray and internal exp

Dysfunction of the Salivary and Lacrimal Glands After Radioiodine Therapy for Thyroid Cancer: Results of the START Study After 6-Months of Follow-Up.

Background: Understanding of changes in salivary and lacrimal gland functions after radioactive iodine therapy (131I-therapy) remains limited, and, to date, no studies have evaluated dose-response relationships between absorbed dose from 131I-therapy and dysfunctions of these glands. This study investigates salivary/lacrimal dysfunctions in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients six months after 131I-therapy, identifies 131I-therapy-related risk factors for salivary/lacrimal dysfunctions, and assesses the relationships between 131I-therapy radiation dose and these dysfunctions. Recommendations for clinical electron beam dosimetry: supplement to the recommendations of Task Group 25.

The goal of Task Group 25 (TG-25) of the Radiation Therapy Committee of the American Association of.Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) was to provide a methodology and set of procedures for a medical physicist performing clinical electron beam dosimetry in the nominal energy range of 5-25 MeV. Specifically, the task group recommended procedures for acquiring basic information required for acceptance testing and treatment planning of new accelerators with therapeutic electron beams. Since the publication of the TG-25 report, significant advances have taken place in the field of electron beam dosimet

Temperature effects on survival and DNA repair in four freshwater cladoceran Daphnia species exposed to UV radiation.

The biological responses of four freshwater daphniid species, Daphnia middendorffiana, D. pulicaria, D. pulex and D. parvula, to a single acute dose of ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) were compared. In addition to survival, we compared the induction of DNA damage (i.e. cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers) between species as well as the ability to repair this damage in the presence or absence of photoreactivating light. All four species showed high levels of shielding against DNA damage when compared to damage induced in purified DNA dosimeters at the same time and dose. Significant variation in surviv

Dosimetric intercomparison for two Australasian clinical trials using an anthropomorphic phantom.

INTRODUCTION: Many different factors can affect the accurate delivery of dose to the clinical target volume in radiotherapy. This is particularly important in the context of multicenter clinical trials where different equipment and techniques may be used for supposedly identical treatments. A dosimetric intercomparison employing an anthropomorphic phantom (level III dosimetric intercomparison) can be used to check many of the factors that could affect treatment by mimicking the radiotherapy pathway of a patient as closely as possible. METHODS AND MATERIALS: An anthropomorphic phantom (ART) wa

Power analysis for personal light exposure measurements and interventions.

BACKGROUND: Light exposure regulates the human circadian system and more widely affects health, well-being, and performance. With the rise in field studies on light exposure's effects, the amount of data collected through wearable loggers and dosimeters has also grown. These data are more complex than stationary laboratory measurements. Determining sample sizes in field studies is challenging, as the literature shows a wide range of sample sizes (between 2 and 1,887 from a recent review of the field and approaching 105 participants in first studies using large-scale 'biobank' databases).
