The effects of low-dose radiation in the treatment of sciatic nerve injury in rats.

AIM: Peripheral nerve regeneration is often blocked by scar formation and misdirection of axon sprouts. The aim of this study is to evaluate electrophysiological and histopathological effects of low-dose radiation therapy on the prevention of intraneural scar formation in peripheral nerve injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this experimental study, twenty rats were randomly divided into two groups. Left sciatic nerves were exposed and clipped by temporary aneurysm clip for 5 minutes in both groups. In all animals, electrophysiological recordings were performed between 22-24 hours after sciatic n

Photoionization versus photoheterolysis of all-trans-retinol. The effects of solvent and laser radiation intensity.

The time-resolved formation of the retinyl carbocation from all-trans-retinol and all-trans-retinol acetate was studied by use of picosecond flash photolysis. From both precursors, the retinyl cation is produced by heterolytic C-O bond cleavage in solvents of medium polarity (acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran, propanol with Reichardt polarity parameter ET(N) approximately 0.5) and high polarity (EtOH, MeOH, TFE, HFIP, ET(N) > 0.6) during the laser pulse (< or =5 ps) where its lifetime is >10 ns. The absorption maximum of the cation at early times (t < 100 ps) is at lambda = 590-600 nm; it shifts t

Radiation-induced bystander effects and adaptive responses--the Yin and Yang of low dose radiobiology?

Our current knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the induction of bystander effects by low doses of high or low LET ionizing radiation is reviewed. The question of what actually constitutes a protective effect is discussed in the context of adaptive (often referred to as hormetic or protective) responses. Finally the review considers critically, how bystander effects may be related to observed adaptive responses or other seemingly protective effects of low doses exposures. Bystander effects induce responses at the tissue level, which are similar to generalized stress responses. Most of the w

Late effects of the Chernobyl radiation accident on T cell-mediated immunity in cleanup workers.

The main goal of this investigation was to evaluate the abnormal T-cell immunity in cleanup workers who took part in the cleanup after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (MNCs) of apparently healthy cleanup workers (n = 134) were used to analyze the phenotype and proliferative response to mitogens in vitro. Evaluation of the MNC phenotype of cleanup workers did not reveal a significant disturbance in the T-cell subpopulation content except for an increase in CD3+CD16+56+ (NKT) cells. Immunophenotyping of phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-activated MNCs demonstrated suppr

The effects of hydrocolloid dressing and gentian violet on radiation-induced moist desquamation wound healing.

The aim of the study was to compare the effect of a gentian violet topical application with that of a moist dressing (hydrocolloid) on the rate and efficacy of radiotherapy-induced moist desquamation wound healing and the patients' satisfaction level with each method. This prospective randomized clinical trial used a stratified sampling design. A sample of 39 patients with 60 wounds had their wounds assessed on alternate days in terms of several wound-healing parameters including wound size, wound pain, incidence of infection, and time required for healing. Patient satisfaction with each treat

Chronic radiation effects: a correlative study of smears and biopsies from the cervix and vagina.

Cervicovaginal smears and biopsies from patients treated with radiotherapy for cervical carcinoma were examined morphologically and immunochemically to provide information on the tissue derivation of cells characteristic of chronic radiation effect in postirradiation smears. In biopsies, stromal changes, such as fibrosis, vessel changes, and atypical fibroblasts were most common. Ulceration, leucocytic infiltration, multinucleated giant cells, regenerative epithelium, and atypical glandular epithelial cells were also present in some specimens. These changes were reflected in smears collected f

Radiobiological studies with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Genetic and developmental effects of high LET radiation.

The biological effects of heavy charged particle (HZE) radiation are of particular interest to travellers and planners for long-duration space flights where exposure levels represent a potential health hazard. The unique feature of HZE radiation is the structured pattern of its energy deposition in targets. There are many consequences of this feature to biological endpoints when compared with effects of ionizing photons. Dose vs response and dose-rate kinetics may be modified, DNA and cellular repair systems may be altered in their abilities to cope with damage, and the qualitative features of

Radiation therapy in a case of systemic mastocytosis: evaluation of histamine levels and mucosal effects.

Plasma histamine levels were obtained during palliative radiation therapy of the spine involved with systemic mastocytosis in a 68-year-old woman. Baseline plasma histamine levels were obtained before irradiation and compared to levels obtained on the third, fifth, eighth, and tenth treatment days. Despite concerns regarding histamine release with mast cell destruction following irradiation, plasma histamine levels remained within normal limits. No change in dermatologic or other systemic manifestations were observed. No untoward systemic or localized sequelae associated with mast cell degranu

Radiation protection against early and late effects of ionizing irradiation by the prostaglandin inhibitor indomethacin.

Protective effects of indomethacin, a prototype prostaglandin-inhibiting agent, against early and late sequelae of radiation injury (after X-rays or gamma rays) in mice were investigated. The following tissues or organs were examined: hematopoietic tissue, esophagus, jejunum, colon, lung, hair follicles, and tissues involved in the development of radiation-induced leg contractures. In addition, the effect of indomethacin was tested against radiation-induced carcinogenesis. In all experiments, the radiation was delivered as a single dose. Indomethacin led to significant protection of hematopoie

[The relation of non-stochastic effects to the radiation dose of the human thyroid gland].

The paper is concerned with the reported data characterizing the dose-effect relationship for the main non-stochastic effects, namely for acute radiation and chronic thyroiditis and hypothyroidism that occur as a result of external and internal radiation of the thyroid. The threshold doses for acute thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, temporary thyroid hypofunction in adults and children exposed to 131I are estimated. The influence of modifying factors on the intensity and the times of thyroid lesion manifestations such as hyperactive thyroid is under consideration.

Acute radiation effects on saliva composition in rats with different vitamin A levels in serum.

Irradiation of the head and neck often causes loss of salivary gland function which may lead to severe oral discomfort. The effects of a single dose of 25 Gy given to rats with different serum levels of vitamin A were studied. The salivary secretion rate as well as concentrations of protein, hexosamine, amylase and electrolytes, and the activities of two antibacterial glycoproteins were measured. At an adequate level of vitamin A in the diet, irradiation significantly reduced whole saliva secretion rate, and decreased the concentration of salivary sodium, calcium and hexosamine as well as the

A functional and chemical study of radiation effects on rat parotid and submandibular/sublingual glands.

The aim of this study was to monitor composition and rate of secretion of rat parotid and submandibular/sublingual saliva following local si … irreversible changes (lag phase, flow rate, potassium, sodium) were observed. A saturation of the irradiation effects (lag phase, flow rate) seems to exist at doses larger than 15 Gy. No significant differences were observed between the radiation-induced functional changes in parotid and submandibular/sublingual salivary gland tissue.

The effects of hyperthermia and ionizing radiation in normal and ataxia telangiectasia human fibroblast lines.

The effects of 45 degrees C hyperthermia and gamma radiation have been studied in three normal human fibroblast lines (GM38, GM730, WI38) and compared to the effects in two lines derived from patients with the hereditary disease ataxia telangiectasia (AT3BI, AT5BI). All lines, both normal and gamma-sensitive AT, showed a similar resistance to killing by heat alone, suggesting that the defect responsible for the increased radiation sensitivity in AT lines does not confer increased heat sensitivity. Shouldered survival curves were obtained in each case indicating the ability to accumulate sublet

[Effects and mechanism of a locally combined treatment with radiation and heat therapy (author's transl)].

An animal experimental study on solid Walker-tumors was undertaken to determine the therapeutic effects utilizing hyperthermy in the form of combined decimeter wave megavolt treatment. Noted was the superior effect of combination therapy as compared to exclusive use of radiation therapy. Hyperthermy therapy alone does inhibit tumor growth but not involution. This inhibiting characteristic of hyperthermy probably changes cellular mitotic rhythm in the form of cellular synchronisation. The indications for combined hyperthermy megavolt treatment is hypoxic malignant tumors of low radiation sensit

The effect of timing of post-operative radiation on outcomes in anaplastic thyroid cancer.

BACKGROUND: Anaplastic thyroid cancer is an aggressive malignancy, for which prompt treatment is necessary. Surgical resection is the recommended initial treatment for resectable cases and most patients require postoperative radiation therapy (PORT). NCCN Guidelines state that adjuvant radiation should ideally begin 2–3 weeks postoperatively, however, limited evidence exists to support this guideline. Herein, we examine the National Cancer Database (NCDB) to assess practice patterns with regard to PORT timing, and to assess whether the time interval between surgery and the start of RT impacts

Effect of UV radiation on the toxicity of imidacloprid and imidacloprid nanoribbons in Drosophila melanogaster.

Previous investigations reported on the toxic effects of imidacloprid (IMC) nanoribbons (IMCNR), synthesized by laser fragmentation/exfoliation in liquid media. In Drosophila melanogaster, chronic or acute treatment with IMCNR significantly reduced olfactory responses, climbing ability, and lifespan compared to bulk IMC treatment. However, no marked differences were observed in productivity or induction of genetic damage between these two formulations. The aim of the present study was to examine the toxicity of IMCNR subjected to ultraviolet (UV) light on D. melanogaster. For this purpose, sol
