Hemorrhagic lumbar synovial cyst.

Synovial cysts of the lumbar spine are an uncommon cause of back and radicular pain. These cysts most frequently present as back pain, followed by chronic progressive radiculopathy or gradual onset of symptoms secondary to spinal canal compromise. Although less common, they can also present with acute spinal cord or root compression symptoms. We report of a case in which hemorrhaging into a right L2-3 facet synovial cyst caused an acute onset of back pain and radiculopathy, requiring surgical excision.

Discal Cyst of the Lumbar Spine: Case Report of a Rare Clinical Entity.

Being a rare clinical entity, discal cyst presents indistinguishably from other causes of lower back pain and radiculopathy. It is an extremely rare pathology with unclear pathogenesis, indeterminate natural history with no consensus on the ideal management of the condition. We report a rare case of discal cyst in a patient who presented to our centre with localised low back pain and subsequently left sided radicular pain. With the aid of MRI and with clear surgical indication we proceeded with endoscopic removal of the cyst and intraoperatively confirmed its origin from the adjacent disc. The

Statistical observations on jaw cysts in Enugu, Nigeria, 1987-1996.

Cases of jaw cysts treated at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu during the 10 year period between 1987 and 1996 were studied clinically. A diagnosis of jaw cyst was established in 20 patients during the above period. According to pathological classification by the WHO method, these patients included 10 (50%) with dentigerous cyst, 3 (15%) with radicular cyst, 3 (15%) with odontogenic keratocyst, 3 (15%) with fissural cyst (nasopalatine duct cyst, nasoalveolar cyst, globulomaxillary cyst), 1 (5%) with dermoid cyst. Patients wi…

Symptomatic sacral perineurial (Tarlov) cysts.

Sacral perineurial (Tarlov) cysts are rare lesions. Over a seven year period 4000 patients underwent surgery for lumbar disk herniation. In three patients neurological symptoms were caused by large sacral perineurial cysts. Methods of choice for diagnosis of Tarlov cysts are lumbosacral magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography myelography. The majority of Tarlov cysts are asymptomatic. In case of large (> or = 1.5 cm) and symptomatic perineurial cyst, as in three patients reported in this article, microsurgical treatment was successful. Although rare, perineurial (Tarlov) cysts m

Comparative analysis between developmental and inflammatory odontogenic cysts: retrospective study and literature review.

PURPOSE: To assess epidemiological, clinical, and radiographic characteristics of odontogenic cysts (OCs) in a South Brazilian sample and to … 1.26% (n = 406), the majority of patients was male (56.73%), and the mean age was 39 ± 17.33 years. Radicular cyst was the most common OC (46.06%), followed by the odontogenic keratocyst (15.02%), dentigerous cyst (14.04%), and paradental cyst (13.55%). Inflammatory OCs were more prevalent in the maxilla (54.84%) and developmental cysts in the mandible (69.92%) …

Mandibular infected buccal cyst and paradental cyst: the same or separate entities?

The WHO classification of odontogenic cysts includes the radicular (residual) and paradental (inflammatory collateral; mandibular infected buccal) cysts as inflammatory odontogenic cysts. Because the paradental group of inflammatory cysts may clinically cause diagnostic and therapeutic problems when they are associated with first and second molar teeth it was decided to review the literature and present an additional case. The aetiology and histological features of the inflammatory collateral cyst, the paradental cyst and the mandibular infected buccal cyst are identical and the differences th

Epithelial jaw cysts: analysis of 126 Nigerian cases.

One hundred and twenty-six Nigerian cases of epithelial jaw cysts were retrieved from case notes and biopsy records of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Department of Oral Pathology and Oral Biology of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. The cases were analysed for age, sex, site and methods of management. Results show that developmental odontogenic cysts (57.14%) were more common than inflammatory odontogenic cysts (26.94%). Dentigerous cyst (22.22%) was the most common epithelial jaw cyst, followed by radicular cyst (21.43%). Developmental non-odontogenic cysts were mo…

Epithelial jaw cysts: 10 years of the WHO classification.

Numerous papers on epithelial jaw cysts have appeared in the decade since the publication in 1971 of the WHO histological classification of odontogenic tumours, jaw cysts, and allied lesions. Despite clarification of certain cyst varieties no major revisions are necessary. The following minor modifications are proposed. In the developmental odontogenic group, the terms keratocyst and follicular are preferred to primordial and dentigerous. The alveolar cyst of infants is categorised separately from the gingival cyst of adults. The developmental lateral periodontal cyst is included as a distinct

Mucous cell hyperplasia in an odontogenic cyst from a patient with Muir-Torre syndrome.

Mucous cell proliferation in a periapical radicular cyst from a patient with a family history of colonic malignancies and multiple sebaceous neoplasms of the skin, so-called Muir-Torre syndrome, is reported. Such goblet cell hyperplasia has not been previously reported to be associated with any known syndrome. We believe the finding of mucous cell hyperplasia in an odontogenic cyst may not simply be coincidental, but should raise suspicion of paraneoplastic potential and warrant further evaluation for possible occult neoplastic disease.

Immunohistochemical study of jaw cysts: different existence of keratins in odontogenic and non-odontogenic epithelial linings.

Keratins and secretory component (SC) were immunohistochemically examined in fresh tissue samples from 45 odontogenic and 35 non-odontogenic cysts. Lining epithelia of almost all cases contained keratins which reacted with polyclonal antibodies (Dako, Bio-Science), and no difference could be found between the two groups of lesions. By staining with two monoclonal antibodies against keratins, i.e., RGE53 (Bio-Science) and RKSE60 (Bio-Science), it was revealed that the epithelia of non-odontogenic cysts, which were columnar epithelium in most cases, had fully and positively reacted with RGE53, w

Glandular Odontogenic Cyst of Anterior Maxilla - A Rare Case Report.

RATIONALE: Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare type of cyst of the jaws, which shares histological features with that of lateral periodontal cyst, botryoid cyst, radicular cyst with mucous metaplasia, or low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma, making it difficult to come to a definitive diagnosis. Not many cases of GOC have been reported in the literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 40-year-old male patient presented with pain in the upper right front tooth region. Mild extraoral swelling, obliterating the right nasolabial fold, was present. Tenderness on percussion was present in involved teeth.…

Expression of Fascin and SALL4 in odontogenic cysts and tumors: an immunohistochemical appraisal.

BACKGROUND: Various stemness markers (SOX2, OCT4, and NANOG) have been studied in odontogenic cysts and tumors. However, studies on SALL4 having similar properties of stemness has not been documented. Additionally, insight into fascin as a migratory molecule is less explored. In this study, the expression of SALL4 and fascin were evaluated in ameloblastoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT), odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), dentigerous cyst (DC), radicular cyst (RC), and calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC). METHODS: Semi-quantitative analysis of fascin and SALL4 immuno-positive cells was done in…

Morphological classification of odontogenic keratocysts using Bouligand-Minkowski fractal descriptors.

The Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a cystic lesion of the jaws, which has high growth and recurrence rates compared to other cysts of the jaws (for instance, radicular cyst, which is the most common jaw cyst type). For this reason OKCs are considered by some to be benign neoplasms. There exist two sub-types of OKCs (sporadic and syndromic) and the ability to discriminate between these sub-types, as well as other jaw cysts, is an important task in terms of disease diagnosis and prognosis. With the development of digital pathology, computational algorithms have become central to addressing this…
