Unilateral cryptorchidism was induced in under 2-day-old Wistar rat pups. A control group of rats underwent sham operation at the same age. The animals were killed at intervals from 5 to 120 days, both testes were excised, weighted, and processed for histological examination, morphometric measurement of the seminiferous tubules, and DNA flow cytometry. Rats which received acetaldehyde by intraperitoneal injection on a single occasion sustained neural degeneration in the cerebral cortex detectable with both light and electron microscopy. The degeneration was more intense and included the hippocampus when acetaldehyde exposure was given on 5 consecutive days in the form of ethanol vapor inhalation and disulfiram injections. The ability to reliably obtain serial determinations of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) over time in small animals using simple and inexpensively constructed platinum-wire microelectrodes has been investigated. An experimental pathological study was performed to observe the effect of praziquantel treatment on the pulmonary lesions of the rat lung fluke, Paragonimus iloktsuenensis. The metacercariae were obtained from the freshwater crab, Sesarma dehaani, and 40 rats (wistar) were fed each with 10 metacercariae. On 20 rats praziquantel treatment (100mg/kg/day x 5 days) was done at 5 weeks after the infection while remaining 20 rats were kept untreated for use as controls. Histologic and ultrastructural changes of the liver in old and non-old Wistar rats and the effects due to persistent restriction of food and exposure to noise were studied. There was increase of hepatocytes with enlarged or double nuclei, and apoptosis as well as fatty change of the liver in the old rats. The incidence of apoptosis and fatty change was lower in those rats with persistent food restriction, but no significant change of the liver was seen in those animals persistently exposed to noisy, environment.
