Cystic lesions of the retrorectal space.

Cysts of the retrorectal space comprise a heterogeneous group of rare lesions. Most develop from embryological remnants and include tailgut cysts, dermoid cysts, rectal duplication cysts, anal canal duplication cysts, sacrococcygeal teratomas and anterior meningocoele. Tailgut cyst is the most common cyst of developmental origin, usually presenting as a multilocular cystic mass with mucoid content and lined by multiple epithelial types. Compared with tailgut cysts, rectal duplication cysts display all layers of the large bowel wall including a well-defined muscularis propria. Retrorectal cysts

A rare case of extrauterine adenosarcoma arising in endometriosis of the rectovaginal septum.

OBJECTIVE: To present a rare case of endometrial stromal sarcoma arising in endometriosis of the rectovaginal septum. DESIGN: Case report. SETTING: Academic tertiary referral center for endometriosis treatment. PATIENT(S): A 50-year-old woman with a history of endometriosis presented with catamenial rectal pain and deep dyspareunia. Imaging findings suggested new endometriotic lesions in the rectovaginal space. INTERVENTION(S): Total hysterectomy, salpingo-oophorectomy, and excision of the lesion in the rectovaginal septum were performed. Although extemporary pathology confirmed endometrio

Preoperative evaluation of patients with inguinal hernia for colorectal disease.

In retrospective series, 17.0 to 25.5 per cent of those patients with carcinoma of the colon or rectum have been found to have concurrent inguinal herniation. This observation prompted the recommendation that patients with hernias be thoroughly screened for disease of the colon and rectum. That recommendation remains controversial in part because it has not previously been prospectively evaluated. In a one year period, 202 consecutive patients with inguinal hernias completed a preoperative protocol which included: 1, gastrointestinal history; 2, rectal examination; 3, testing of at least two s

An unusual hamartomatous malformation of the rectosigmoid presenting as an irreducible rectal prolapse and necessitating rectosigmoid resection in a 14-week-old infant.

A 14-week-old female infant presented with an irreducible rectal prolapse and a large polypoid tumor at the tip of the prolapsed mucosa. The tumor and prolapsed rectum were resected. Four weeks after the operation, profuse rectal bleeding occurred and a second similar tumor was diagnosed by endoscopy in the sigmoid colon. Laparotomy, rectosigmoid resection, and endorectal pull-through were performed. At operation, the serosal surface showed ragged polypoid lesions and an abnormal angiomatous vascularization. The postoperative course was uneventful. The histology suggested a congenital mucosal

Rectal adenocarcinoma with rectoprostatic fistula following prostate brachytherapy.

An 80-year-old man with history of prostate cancer successfully treated with brachytherapy was initially thought to have Fournier's gangrene until imaging detected a rectoprostatic fistula. Although this is known to be a rare complication of prostate brachytherapy, in this case the aetiology was a new primary rectal adenocarcinoma. It was not possible to catheterise per urethra owing to the fistula, so he was fitted with suprapubic catheter, and underwent palliative loop colostomy. Brachytherapy carries a low risk of second primary cancers, although two previous cases reported such cancers as

Endobronchial Metastasis From Rectal Cancer Treated by High-Frequency Electrocautery Ablation via Bronchoscope and Targeted Drugs:Report of One Case.

The lungs are the most common sites of metastases from non-pulmonarymalignancies. Endobronchial metastases are rare and have no specificity in clinical manifestations, thus being prone to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. The common tumors associated with endobronchial metastasis are renal, breast, and colorectal cancers. This article reported one case of postoperative rectal cancer with endobronchial and lung metastases, which was relieved by high-frequency electrocautery ablation via bronchoscope, chemotherapy, and targeted drugs, aiming to provide a reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

[A Case of Late Recurrence of Gastric Cancer Over Ten Years Post Gastrectomy].

A 72-year-old woman underwent a low anterior resection of the rectum and a total hysterectomy with a bilateral salpingo- oophorectomy simultaneously for rectal and ovarian cancer, respectively. The pathological diagnosis was a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of the rectum with some poorly differentiated components signet-ring cell components. A mucinous adenocarcinoma, with similar characteristics as that in the rectum, was found in the ovary. Intraoperative findings revealed no direct invasion between the rectum and ovaries, with no peritoneal dissemination. She was, therefore, diagn

A tale of colorectal carcinoma metastases in the head and neck region: a case report.

Colorectal cancer ideally spreads via the haematogenous or lymphatic route with the most common metastasis to the liver or lungs. Metastasis of this cancer to the parotid gland has not been previously reported. This paper presents a case of rectal adenocarcinoma in a 34-year-old Pakistani male, who presented with histopathological evidence of metastasis in the parotid gland within one year of treatment. He had previously undergone neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy with surgical resection of rectal adenocarcinoma. Metastasis to the parotid gland is an uncommon occurrence in our setting and to our

[Radical Resection Was Achieved Using a Liver-First Approach for Simultaneous Liver Metastasis from Rectal Cancer-A Case Report].

The patient was a 70s male. A fecal occult blood test showed a positive reaction, and colonoscopy was performed. Under a diagnosis of rectal cancer, he was referred to our hospital. Detailed examination revealed solitary liver metastasis measuring 60 mm and involving the S4 to S1 areas of the liver. A strategy to perform systemic chemotherapy in advance was adopted. Five courses of FOLFOXIRI therapy were conducted, and a partial response(PR)was achieved, suggesting that the tumor is resectable. Extended left/caudal lobectomy was performed. There was no complication, and the patient was dischar

Kallikrein-Related Peptidase 6 (KLK6) as a Contributor toward an Aggressive Cancer Cell Phenotype: A Potential Role in Colon Cancer Peritoneal Metastasis.

Kallikrein-related peptidases (KLKs) are implicated in many cancer-related processes. KLK6, one of the 15 KLK family members, is a promising biomarker for diagnosis of many cancers and has been associated with poor prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Herein, we evaluated the expression and cellular functions of KLK6 in colon cancer-derived cell lines and in clinical samples from CRC patients. We showed that, although many KLKs transcripts are upregulated in colon cancer-derived cell lines, KLK6, KLK10, and KLK11 are the most highly secreted proteins. KLK6 induced calcium flux in HT2
