Refractive surgery and dry eye.

Refractive surgery is one of the most common elective surgeries performed worldwide. The incidence of dry eye disease (DED) after corneal refractive surgery varies among different studies. Pre-existing untreated DED has been identified as a risk factor for postsurgical dry eye symptoms. On the basis of both evidence and clinical experience, some recommendations for ocular surface and DED management pre- and post-refractive surgery are described. In aqueous deficiency Dry Eye Disease, preservative-free lubricating drops should be preferred, in addition to ointment and gel forms. Topical anti-in

The ocular manifestations of Weissenbacher-Zweymuller syndrome.

PURPOSE: Weissenbacher-Zweymuller syndrome (WZS) is an autosomal recessive disorder of delayed skeletal maturation. Its characteristic features include rhizomelic dwarfism with metaphyseal and vertebral changes. It has been challenged whether WZS is a part of the spectrum of Stickler syndrome. We report ocular findings in the largest ever-presented series of patients with WZS. METHODS: Patients underwent a paediatric examination, including assessment of growth and development, genetic work-up and X-ray of vertebra and long bones. All had a complete ophthalmic examination, cycloplegic refracti

Ocular growth in infant aphakia. Bilateral versus unilateral congenital cataracts.

In a prospective study the changes in the ocular axial lengths and in the overall refractions were examined in cases of unilateral and bilateral congenital cataract requiring surgery during the first year of life. Measurements were taken on 18 children with unilateral and on 20 children with bilateral congenital cataract at the time of surgery and up to eight years postoperatively. Surgery was performed via a pars plana/plicata approach, and all infants were fitted with contact lenses. In cases of unilateral cataract, the ocular axial length tended to be superior to the age-matched values alre

Refractive Outcomes after Cataract Surgery.

A post-operative manifest refractive error as close as possible to target is key when performing cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, given that residual astigmatism and refractive errors negatively impact patients' vision and satisfaction. This review explores refractive outcomes prior to modern biometry; advances in biometry and its impact on patients' vision and refractive outcomes after cataract surgery; key factors that affect prediction accuracy; and residual refractive errors and the impact on visual outcomes. There are numerous pre-, intra-, and post-operative fac

Refractive extended depth-of-focus lens design based on periodic power profile for presbyopia correction.

PURPOSE: Limitations of existing diffractive multifocal designs for presbyopia correction include discrete foci and photic phenomena such as halos and glare. This study aimed to explore a methodology for developing refractive extended depth-of-focus (EDoF) lenses based on a periodic power profile. METHODS: The proposed design technique employed an optical power profile that periodically alternated between far, intermediate and near distances across the pupil radius. To evaluate the lens designs, optical bench testing was conducted. The impact on visual performance was assessed using a spatial
