Fatal Opioid Overdoses by Historical and Contemporary Neighborhood-Level Structural Racism.

IMPORTANCE: Black, Indigenous, and Latino communities are disproportionately affected by the US overdose epidemic. Structural inequalities, encompassing social, economic, and infrastructural dimensions, have been increasingly theorized as fundamental drivers of these disparities. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether there is an association between neighborhood-level structural racism and opioid-involved overdose deaths in an urban area. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This ecological serial cross-sectional study of 796 census tracts (2017-2019) and 792 census tracts (2020-2022) in Chicago, I

Sustained impacts of neighborhood investments on sleep health over a 5-year period: Insights from a natural experiment in two urban neighborhoods in the United States.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Neighborhood disinvestment is a downstream impact of structural racism, especially afflicting minoritized communities. Thus, neighborhood reinvestment may serve as a policy-level intervention to mitigate sleep and other health disparities. This study builds on previous work by leveraging a natural experimental design to evaluate the 5-year effects of neighborhood investments on residents' sleep. METHODS: Data are from the PHRESH Zzz study, a natural experiment conducted in two low-income, predominantly Black American, urban neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a r

Impact of neighborhood safety on adolescent physical activity in Saudi Arabia: gender and socio-economic perspectives.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Adolescent physical activity is a critical determinant of long-term physical and mental health. However, the factors influencing activity levels remain underexplored in rapidly urbanizing regions such as Saudi Arabia, where changing built environments pose unique challenges. METHODS: This study examined the relationship between neighborhood safety perceptions and physical activity levels among 1,500 adolescents aged 14-17 years in the cities of Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam, representing a mix of urban and suburban settings. This study used a cross-sectional design wit

The effect of the urban built environment on the prevalence rate of chronic diseases in the community neighborhood level: a case study in Qingdao, China.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases such as hypertension (HTN) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are escalating global health burdens, particularly in rapidly urbanizing, high-density regions. While individual, socioeconomic, and behavioral risk factors are well-established, evidence on the influence of the urban built environment remains limited, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: This study applied the comprehensive 5D built environment framework to systematically analyze the associations between built environment characteristics and community-level prevalence of HT

Food Swamps and Transportation Access: Intersecting Structural Determinants of Food Shopping and Access in Marginalized Urban Communities.

The study examined the relationship between food swamps and self-reported food shopping frequency and perceived food access, while considering transportation mode and travel time. This Community-Based Participatory Research study surveyed residents from six neighborhoods in Hartford. Individual-level food swamp exposure (the ratio of unhealthy to healthy food stores within a 0.5-mile radius of participants' homes) was measured both objectively (using GIS-based methods) and subjectively (through self-reporting). Poisson regression models assessed the associations between food swamps and outcome

Neighborhood deprivation is associated with longer hospital stay for common pediatric surgical procedures independent of complication rates.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood deprivation begets care delays and complications after children's surgery in single center studies. We aimed to better understand these associations through generalizable data. METHODS: We identified children undergoing six common operations using State Inpatient Databases, defining neighborhood deprivation using Child Opportunity Index. Risk-adjusted length of stay (LOS) and complication rates were compared using multivariable regression. RESULTS: Among 102,399 children, neighborhood deprivation was associated with race, public insurance, and transfer. On risk-adjus

Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status and New Hidradenitis Suppurativa Diagnoses in a Single Health System.

IMPORTANCE: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. Risk factors for developing HS (eg smoking and obesity) are influenced by social drivers of health at the neighborhood level. However, the association of neighborhood-level socioeconomic status (nSES) and HS has not been adequately assessed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of nSES with new HS diagnoses among dermatology patients within a single health system. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a cross-sectional study of patients of the dermatology clinics at the University of California San Fr

Accessibility, neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage and expenditures on electronic gambling machines: a spatial analysis based on player account data.

BACKGROUND: Gambling and its harmful effects on human health and well-being represent a significant public health concern in many countries, with electronic gambling machines (EGMs) recognized as one of the most detrimental forms of gambling. Previous research has established an association between EGM accessibility, expenditure, gambling harm, and the socioeconomic status (SES) of neighborhoods. However, there is limited understanding of the direct impact of SES and EGM accessibility on individual player expenditures. Prior estimations of expenditure often rely on self-reported data or venue-

The Legacy of Redlining: Increasing Childhood Asthma Disparities through Neighborhood Poverty.

Rationale: Identifying the root causes of racial disparities in childhood asthma is critical for health equity. Objectives: To determine whether the racist policy of redlining in the 1930s led to present-day disparities in childhood asthma by increasing community-level poverty and decreasing neighborhood socioeconomic position (SEP). Methods: We categorized census tracts at the birth address of participants from the Children's Respiratory and Environmental Workgroup birth cohort consortium into categories A, B, C, and D as defined by the Home Owners Loan Corporation, with D being the highest p

Greater Neighborhood Disadvantage Is Associated with Alterations in Fetal Functional Brain Network Structure.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between neighborhood disadvantage (ND) and functional brain development of in utero fetuses. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted an observational study using Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) scores to assess the impact of ND on a prospectively recruited sample of healthy pregnant women from Washington, DC. Using 79 functional magnetic resonance imaging scans from 68 healthy pregnancies at a mean gestational age of 33.12 weeks, we characterized the overall functional brain network structure using a graph metric approach. We used linear mixed effects models to ass

Effects of neighborhood disadvantage and peer deviance on adolescent antisocial behavior: Testing potential interactions with age-of-onset.

Research has suggested that childhood-onset conduct problems (CPs) are more strongly related to individual predispositions, whereas adolescent-onset CP is more strongly associated with social factors, such as peer delinquency. Neighborhood disadvantage (ND) increases the risk for associating with deviant peers. Thus, peer delinquency could mediate the relationship between ND and adolescent-onset CP. This mediational hypothesis has not been tested previously. We tested this hypothesis in 1,127 justice-involved adolescent males using self-reported delinquency and official arrest records over 3 y

Childlessness and Social Support in Old Age in China.

Although previous studies showed that children are the primary source of old-age support in China, much less is known about the availability and sources of social support among childless elders. Also, little research has explored how older adults' social support transitions over time by childless status. Using the 2005 and 2011 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (N = 14,575), this study examined the transition of living arrangement and sources of social support by childless status among adults aged 65 and older. A series of multinomial logistic and linear regression models were used

Living alone, patient sex and mortality after acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial factors, including social support, affect outcomes of cardiovascular disease, but can be difficult to measure. Whether these factors have different effects on mortality post-acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in men and women is not clear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between living alone, a proxy for social support, and mortality postdischarge AMI and to explore whether this association is modified by patient sex. DESIGN: Historical cohort study. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: All patients discharged with a primary diagnosis of AMI in a major urban center during the

Socio-cultural factors in adolescent septic illicit abortions in Ilorin, Nigeria.

One hundred and ninety-two adolescents (aged 12-18 years) with septic illicit abortions were interviewed to assess socio-cultural factors associated with illegally induced septic abortions at Ilorin, Nigeria. They were mostly unmarried schoolgirls who were ignorant of contraception. Inadequate parental supervision contributed largely to unplanned pregnancies, while poor economic state of these patients influenced the occurrence of illegal septic abortions. Wide-spread availability of an acceptable family-life education, with improved socio-economic state of the adolescents would most probably

Myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative disorders in Tasmania, 1972-80: patterns in space and time.

During the period 1972-80, 866 patients with myeloproliferative (MP) and lymphoproliferative (LP) disorders were diagnosed in Tasmania. The residential histories of these cases were compared with those of population-based controls. No space-time clustering was demonstrated by individuals of any single diagnosis or group of diagnoses, nor were any regional differences in incidence detected. However, urban-rural differences were observed. Rural exposures were important especially in early childhood and at specific intervals before onset for certain diagnoses. Farm residence in early life yielded
