The effects of equinatoxin II on respiration--possible mechanism of the toxin lethality.

In rat an intravenous application (i.v.) of a lethal dose of the equinatoxin II (EqT II) provoked a respiratory arrest. It is not known whether the respiratory arrest is a result of a direct actions of the toxin on lung tissue, on neuromuscular junctions or the on the central nervous system. The influences of the toxin on the neuromuscular transmission and on muscular contraction were studied in isolated rat diaphragm. The effect of EqT II on end plate potentials of m. cutaneus pectoris was measured in the frog Rana esculenta. To monitor equinatoxin II effects on the central nervous system of

[Role of the lateroventral periolivary nucleus in the central chemoreception of respiration in rats].

Using the methods of microinjection, microiontophoresis, electrolytic destruction and electric stimulation, the present work was undertaken to investigate whether the lateroventral periolivary nucleus (LVPO) might play a role in the central mechanism of chemoreception on respiration. Experiments were performed on 38 chloralose-urethane anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats. The results were as follows: (1) Bilateral microinjection of acidified mock CSF into the LVPO region, evoked an enhancement in respiratory activities. (2) Microiontophoretic application of H+ caused mainly excitatory effects on …

Effects of alcohols on the respiration and fermentation of aerated suspensions of baker's yeast.

The immediate effects of externally added alcohols on CO2 production and O2 consumption of suspensions of washed, aerated baker's yeast were studied by stopped-flow membrane inlet mass spectrometry. Glucose-supported fermentation was progressively inhibited by increasing ethanol concentration (0-20%, v/v). The inhibition by ethanol was quite different from that observed for acetaldehyde; thus it is unlikely that toxicity of the latter can account for the observed effects. For five different alkanols (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol and 1-butanol) increasing inhibition of anaerobic fe

[Role of external respiration in the formation of the autonomic component in motion sickness].

Time course variations in the ventilation and gas exchange functions of the lungs, gas composition and acid-base equilibrium of blood were investigated in 22 male test subjects, aged 27-49 years, who were kept in the head-down position (-8 degrees) and rocked in parallel swings. The subjects susceptible to motion sickness developed lung hyperventilation and concomitant alveolar-arterial hypocapnia and respiratory alkalosis which may potentiate a symptom-complex of vestibular disorders. To control hypocapnia, the subjects used a hypercapnic breathing mixture (4% CO2, 96% air). This eliminated t

[Beta-adrenergic mediation of the central control of respiration: myth or reality].

Self poisoning with beta-blocking drugs might increase with the extension of their therapeutic fields. Usually the management of this intoxication is mainly directed toward antagonizing the beta-adrenoreceptor blocking effects. Thus attention is specially directed to the cardiovascular condition and to the bronchoconstrictor effect. Nonetheless, in spite of this treatment, fatal cases have been reported, suggesting that other complications are responsible of the clinical course of this acute poisoning. In fact, in some cases, a respiratory arrest appeared as the major determinant of death, alt

The effect of triazolam on arousal and respiration in central sleep apnea patients.

It was hypothesized that triazolam might decrease central apneas associated with arousal periods in patients with central sleep apnea by hastening the onset of consolidated sleep. Five male patients, diagnosed as having central sleep apnea on a screening night, participated in a double-blind randomized crossover study of the effect of placebo, 0.125 mg triazolam, and 0.25 mg triazolam on sleep, respiration, and daytime function. Results indicated that the medication increased total sleep and decreased central apnea index and number of brief arousals. Improved sleep quality was reflected in imp…

Characteristics of farmers who have obtained personal dust respirators.

A postal survey was used to investigate the characteristics of farmers who have acquired dust respirators. In 1979 about a quarter of the farmers were using dust respirators, men more often than women. The more vocational training the farmer had and the larger the area of land under cultivation the more likely he was to own a dust respirator. Grain producers had purchased the protective devices more frequently than other farmers had. Farmers who participated in the occupational health intervention during 1980-82 had acquired dust respirators considerably more often than those in the control gr

The effects of low-voltage electric shock on respiration in the anaesthetized cat.

Airflow (v), expired ventilation (VE), oxygen usage (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), blood pressure (B.P.) and the electrocardiogram (e.c.g.) were measured before and after applying low-voltage electric shocks (15-110 V a.c., 8-45 mA, 50 Hz) from the forelimb to the opposite hind limb of cats anaesthetized with pentobarbitone. Periods of shock application were either short (0.5-1.5 s) or more prolonged (10-30 s). Respiratory arrest from tetanic contractions of the respiratory muscles was always present throughout the period of shock application. Following the shocks, even those of the

Controlled trial of dexamethasone in respirator-dependent infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

A randomized trial was conducted of dexamethasone therapy in infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia who were dependent on respirators and were not progressing clinically despite conventional treatment. Babies were admitted to the study if they had a roentgenogram and clinical diagnosis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, were 2 to 6 weeks in age, weighed less than 1,500 g, had made no progress in weaning for the preceding five days, and were free of sepsis, patent ductus arteriosus, and congenital heart disease, and had had no intravenous fat for at least 24 hours. After parental consent was obtai

Role of adenosine as an endogenous regulator of respiration in hamster brown adipocytes.

The action of endogeneous adenosine on isolated hamster brown adipocytes was examined. Adenosine production from brown adipocytes was measur … butyl-1-methylxanthine, present at a concentration (10 microM) which did not change basal levels of respiration or lipolysis. Addition of the adenosine analogue 2-chloroadenosine antagonized isoproterenol-stimulated respiration and lipolysis and prevented potentiation of isoproterenol responses with 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine. To localize the site of adenosi …

The appearance and characterization of cyanide-resistant respiration in the fungus Candida albicans.

The respiration of yeast-form cells of the dimorphic fungus Candida albicans became resistant to cyanide during aging treatment in the resting state. An alternative, cyanide-resistant respiratory pathway was found to develop fully in cells aged at a concentration of 0.75 X 10(9)/ml or more at 25 C, but did not appear at 5 C. Chloramphenicol did not prevent the appearance of the alternative respiratory pathway. The effects of inhibitors, salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) and disulfiram (tetraethylthiuram disulfide), on respiration of aged cells were examined, and results indicated that SHAM binds a…

Acid maltase deficiency: treatment of respiratory insufficiency with cuirass respirator.

Three patients with the late-onset form of acid maltase deficiency showed a gradual weakening of proximal limb and trunk muscles leading to severe respiratory insufficiency. Considerable deterioration of pulmonary function occurred owing to a vicious cycle of hypoventilation and exhaustion. Treatment by nocturnal cuirass ventilation with tailor-made shells was successful. The muscle weakness still progressed very slowly but there were no more respiratory problems.

The effects of cyanide on the growth and respiration of Enterobacter aerogenes in continuous culture.

The effect of cyanide on the physiology of lactate- and oxygen-limited Enterobacter aerogenes NCTC 10336 was studied in chemostat culture (D = 0.1 h-1). In the absence of cyanide, the molar growth yield from oxygen (YO2) under oxygen limitation was 60% of the carbon-limited value. A similar decrease in yield was observed in a lactate-limited culture (excess oxygen) which was continuously fed low concentrations of potassium cyanide. The cultures with the lower growth yields possessed respiratory systems less sensitive to inhibition by cyanide. This was particularly marked in cultures grown in t

[Characteristics of the effect of ether, sodium thiopental, fentanyl and naloxone on respiration].

It has been demonstrated in experiments on rabbits that anesthetic ether sodium thiopental, phentanyl and leucine-enkephalin have different inhibitory effects on the activity of inspiratory and expiratory neurons in the medulla oblongata. Bemegrid recovers the activity of the respiratory center inhibited by all the substances under study whereas naloxone eliminates apnea induced by phentanyl or leucine-encephalin alone. Besides, it has been ascertained that naloxone effectively abolishes the inhibition of the respiratory center caused by hyperventilation in rats.
