The Tac4 gene-derived hemokinin-1 (HK-1) binds to the NK1 receptor, similarly to Substance P, and plays a role in acute stress reactions and pain transmission in mice. Here we investigated Tac4 mRNA expression in stress and pain-related regions and its involvement in chronic restraint stress-evoked behavioral changes and pain using Tac4 gene-deleted (Tac4-/-) mice compared to C57Bl/6 wildtypes (WT). Tac4 mRNA was detected by in situ hybridization RNAscope technique. Touch sensitivity was assessed by esthesiometry, cold tolerance by paw withdrawal latency from 0°C water. Anxiety was evaluated i

Female, especially for pregnant female, are vulnerable to psychological stress. The morphology and metabolism of the maternal intestine are both obviously changed during pregnancy, thus making intestinal health status more fragile under psychological stress. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of CRH and CRHR1 in the pregnant maternal intestine under psychological stress, thus exploring the mechanism of psychological stress in the pregnant maternal intestine. Bama miniature pigs were divided into the control and restraint stress groups from the first day of pregnancy. Afte

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiome protects the host from infection by promoting epithelial integrity and providing basal immunologic stimulation. Disruption of this delicate ecosystem is linked to morbidity and mortality among critically ill patients, but the impact of traumatic injury on the gut microbiome is poorly understood. This study sought to identify alterations in gut microbiota following trauma and persistent stress in rodents without confounding antibiotics.
METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats aged 9 weeks to 11 weeks were randomized to naive, lung contusion with hemorrhagic shock (LCHS

Chronic restraint stress (CRS) induces insulin-resistant hyperglycemia by inducing injury to the brain neurons in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). However, the CRS mice did not suffer from hypoglycemia. In this study, mice of both CRS and NTS mechanical injury models were induced to investigate whether impaired glucose metabolism has changed upon the extension of the survival time after modeling. Body weight, food and water intake, fasting blood glucose, glucose tolerance, and glucose metabolism related to blood hormone levels were monitored for 12 weeks following the induction of injury.

Stress potentiates craving for addictive drugs including cocaine. To elucidate neural mechanisms underlying this effect of stress, we developed an experimental paradigm combining cocaine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) with a restraint stress. Acute restraint stress exposure immediately before posttest significantly increased cocaine CPP scores. It has been suggested that the extracellular noradrenaline (NA) level is increased by stress in the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDT), which sends cholinergic projections to dopamine (DA) neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), and m

Stress has been considered as a risk factor for the development and aggravation of several diseases. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) is one of the main actors for the stress response and homeostasis maintenance. Positron emission tomography (PET) has been used to evaluate neuronal activity and to study brain regions that may be related to the HPA axis response. Since neuroimaging is an important tool in detecting neuroendocrine-related changes, we used fluorodeoxyglucose-18 (18F-FDG) and positron emission microtomography (microPET) to evaluate sexual differences in the glucose br

Stress impacts the reproductive axis at the level of the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, which exert an effect on the ovary. Menstruation is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovary (HPO) axis. However, the role of stress in menstruation remains unclear. The objective of this study was to explore the role of stress in endometrial breakdown and shedding, using the pseudopregnant mouse menstrual-like model. Female mice were mated with vasectomized males and labeled day 0.5, upon observation of a vaginal seminal plug. On day 3.5, decidualization was induced in pseudopregnant mice using

Dog demographics are considered as one of the main factors in the control of rabies. Having reliable data on dog population and husbandry practices on how they are managed is a key point in the elaboration of any control program to fight against human deaths due to rabies which are mainly due to dogs. However, the lack of data regarding dog population is one of the main hindrances to elaborate effective fighting projects in developing countries, particularly in Africa. In order to contribute for reliable data on dog demographics and husbandry practices related to rabies, this study was carried

It is well known that stress changes levels of pituitary hormones in the bloodstream and in the pituitary itself. However, almost nothing is known about the impact of stress on histological and stereological parameters of the growth hormone producing cells (somatotrophs-GH cells). The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of: acute and repeated immobilization; acute and repeated restraint on histological and morphofunctional parameters of somatotrophs in adult Wistar rats. Changes in the pituitary gland volume; the volume density and volume of somatotrophs following acute and

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) show dysregulation of the expected Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis and elevated cortisol responses to stress and response patterns, but little has been reported regarding their recovery from stress in terms of cortisol concentrations. This response was investigated in a sample of 32 young males with ASD aged between 9 and 18 years (M = 14.3 yr, SD = 2.7 yr), using a standardised experimental protocol combined with individualised stressor and non-stressor tasks. Results indicated that about half of the sample demonstrated unexpected HPA axi

BACKGROUND: Head immobilization devices (HIDs) are a staple of neurosurgical procedures, including in the intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) operating rooms (ORs) where material modifications were necessary for compatibility with the magnets utilized.
OBJECTIVE: To present the experience in this OR environment and discuss the multifactorial nature of the observed adverse events.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed, utilizing the Department of Neurosurgery and iMRI OR databases to identify patients who suffered complications related to HIDs between November 2007

BACKGROUND: Health services often manage agitated or violent people, and such behaviour is particularly prevalent in emergency psychiatric services (10%). The drugs used in such situations should ensure that the person becomes calm swiftly and safely.
OBJECTIVES: To examine whether haloperidol plus promethazine is an effective treatment for psychosis-induced aggression.
SEARCH METHODS: On 6 May 2015 we searched the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group's Register of Trials, which is compiled by systematic searches of major resources (including MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, BIOSIS, CINAHL, PsycINFO, PubMed,

In rats, immobilization stress (24 h) induced involution of the thymus and spleen, adrenal hypertrophy, and pronounced elevation (by 67%) of serum cortisol in comparison with intact animals; the mean number of stomach ulcers in rats subjected to stress was 6.9. Hypoxic preconditioning consisting of 6 sessions of 10-min hypoxia (8% O2) followed by 10-min reoxygenation with atmospheric air induced adrenal hypertrophy and spleen involution, but did not change blood cortisol level; no stomach ulcers were found in preconditioned rats. In rats subjected to both hypoxic preconditioning and immobiliza

Biomechanical factors influencing the reduction of dislocated hips with the Pavlik harness in patients of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) were studied using a three-dimensional computer model simulating hip reduction dynamics in (1) subluxated and (2) fully dislocated hip joints. Five hip adductor muscles were identified as key mediators of DDH prognosis, and the non-dimensional force contribution of each in the direction necessary to achieve concentric hip reductions was determined. Results point to the adductor muscles as mediators of subluxated hip reductions, as their mechanical a

Clinical manual tests refer to increased ankle stiffness in children immobilized due to hip osteochondritis. The aim of the present study was to investigate musculo-articular stiffness via different techniques in immobilized children to confirm or not and quantify these observations. Ankle stiffness was quantified monthly during the long immobilization period in three diseased children and compared to healthy age-matched children. Sinusoidal perturbations were used to evaluate musculo-articular (MA) stiffness of the ankle plantar-flexors. The stiffness index (SI(MA-EMG)) was the slope of the l
