The incidence of central retinal artery occlusion in Olmsted County, Minnesota.

PURPOSE: To determine the incidence of central retinal artery occlusion in Olmsted County, Minnesota. DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. METHODS: Medical records of all patients living in Olmsted County, Minnesota between 1976 and 2005 diagnosed with central retinal artery occlusion were identified using the Rochester Epidemiology Project medical records linkage system. RESULTS: Forty-three cases were identified for an unadjusted annual incidence in the female population of 1.02 per 100,000 and 1.67 per 100,000 in the male population, with a combined incidence of 1.33. Incidence rates were…

Central retinal artery occlusion in a patient with metabolic syndrome x.

PURPOSE: To report a case of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) in a patient with metabolic syndrome X. CASE REPORT: A 64 year-old-man presented with abrupt, painless, and severe loss of vision in his left eye. Indirect ophthalmoscopy disclosed signs compatible with CRAO and laboratory investigations revealed erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 74 mm/h, C-reactive protein (CRP) level of 21 mg/l, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia, hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia. Fluorescein angiography and immunological studies excluded other systemic disorders. The patient met the full criteria o…

[Antiphospholipid syndrome and bilateral retinal artery and vein occlusion: case report].

The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) has been related to venous and arterial thrombosis of large and small vessels. Ocular vessels can also be involved causing transient visual loss, diplopia, ischemic optic neuropathy and central artery and venous occlusion. We describe here a case of antiphospholipid syndrome with occlusion of central retinal artery and vein to call the attention to this diagnosis.

Central retinal artery occlusion following forehead injection with a corticosteroid suspension.

Intralesional injection of corticosteroid suspensions into or adjacent to the ocular adnexa is performed by a number of medical specialists including dermatologists. Although not widely known outside of the ophthalmic community, these injections can lead to blindness through embolization of the central retinal artery. A case of blindness following injection into the forehead lesion of a child with the rare dermatologic condition pyogenic arthritis and pyodermic gangrenosum syndrome is reported. Injection into or near the ocular adnexa may be performed in small boluses to reduce the chance of r…

Glutamate levels in aqueous humor of patients with retinal artery occlusion.

PURPOSE: We analyzed the levels of glutamate and other amino acids in aqueous humor of patients with retinal artery occlusion (RAO) to determine whether glutamate is associated with retinal ischemia in RAO. METHODS: Aqueous humor samples were obtained from nine RAO patients by paracentesis performed as an emergent therapeutic intervention and from nine cataract patients without other ocular disease who served as controls. Aspartic acid, glutamate, taurine, and alanine concentrations were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS: The glutamate level in aqueous humor of…

Visual functions following recovery from non-arteritic central retinal artery occlusion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Visual acuity and other visual functions may improve following treatment of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). A prospective, noncomparative case series study was conducted to investigate patients' visual functions after treatment of non-arteritic CRAO. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight consecutive patients whose visual acuity improved following successful systematic treatment protocol for non-arteritic CRAO of less than 48 hours (one of them with patent cilioretinal artery) were evaluated for visual functions. The visual acuity in seven patients ranged from no light…

[Color Doppler imaging of central retinal artery in retinopathy of prematurity].

Color Doppler imaging (CDI) is a noninvasive technique, combining 2-dimensional brightness-modulated (B-mode) ultrasound evaluation of eye and orbital structures, with simultaneous color-coded Doppler imaging of orbital blood flow. It has been used to characterize various ophthalmic disorders in adults. Currently there is no data describing orbital blood flow parameters in either normal children or in those with ophthalmic disease, such as the retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). We evaluated blood flow in the central retinal artery of preterm infants undergoing examination for ROP. We also inves…

Correction-spontaneous central retinal artery occlusion in hemoglobin SC disease(1).

PURPOSE: To describe a case of spontaneous central retinal artery occlusion in a young man with hemoglobin sickle cell disease.METHOD: Case report.RESULTS: A 31-year-old African-American man with a history of hemoglobin SC (sickle C) disease developed sudden painless loss of vision in the right eye. Medical history was remarkable for the recent history of a mild sickle crisis, but no other systemic illness or contributing factors. Central retinal artery occlusion was diagnosed with retinal whitening, cherry red spot, and delayed arteriovenous transit on fluorescein angiography. Over the ensuin…

Partial retinal artery occlusion after coil embolization of an intracerebral aneurysm.

Occlusion of the retinal artery is a rare complication after therapeutic embolization. We present a case of a partial retinal artery obstruction following coil embolization of an intracerebral aneurysm. To our knowledge, only six cases of acute occlusion of the choroidal and/or retinal arteries after therapeutic embolization have been reported so far. The case presented here, however, is the first in which platinum microcoils were the material used. In addition the retinal ischemia was reversible, visual acuity returning to normal and cutten-wool spot and retinal hemorrhages resolving spontane…

Successful scleral buckling procedures decrease central retinal artery blood flow velocity.

BACKGROUND: Limited data suggest that scleral buckling procedures may decrease posterior segment blood flow. How this may affect functional … artery compared with the controls. There was a statistically significant reduction in mean central retinal artery blood flow velocities of up to 53% in the immediate postoperative period. Ophthalmic artery blood flow velocities, however, did not significantly change after the procedure. Successful retinal reattachment with the expected visual improvement was ac …

[Retinal artery occlusion: etiology and risk factors apropos of 151 cases].

A retrospective study covering 151 patients was conducted in order to determine the incidence of risk factors (arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular disorders) in cases of retinal artery occlusion. Occlusion of the central artery was found in 43% of the patients, occlusion of one or several branch arteries in 53%, and cilioretinal artery occlusion in 4%. A monofactorial study of risk factors produced a statistically significant value only for arterial hypertension (P = 0.01). Smoking and diabetic metabolism were not significant, and the correlati…

Homocystinuria presenting as central retinal artery occlusion and longstanding thromboembolic disease.

A case of central retinal artery occlusion in a patient with a 10-year history of unexplained thromboembolic disease due to a secondary hypercoagulable state is presented. Ophthalmological examination led to the final diagnosis.

Central retinal-artery occlusion in a patient with circulating lupus anticoagulant.

The circulating lupus anticoagulant is a spontaneously acquired immunoglobulin that has been associated in vivo with an increased risk of thrombotic episodes. We describe the case of a young woman with central retinal-artery occlusion associated with circulating lupus anticoagulant in the absence of systemic lupus erythematosus or any other autoimmune or collagen vascular disease. In cases of central retinal-artery occlusion without apparent cause, the presence of the lupus anticoagulant should be excluded especially in cases that have been exposed to the human immunodeficiency virus.
