PurposeTo describe the ocular and systemic phenotype in IQCB1-related disease.MethodsFour cases (3 males, 1 female) with molecularly confirmed IQCB1-related disease underwent ophthalmological examination including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) measurement, fundus evaluation, electroretinography (ERG), and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Systemic evaluation including abdominal ultrasound was performed in all cases.ResultsBCVA ranged from perception of light (Case-2; 1 year) to 20/125 (Case-1; 9 years). Fundus evaluation showed whitish or silvery reflex outside the v

INTRODUCTION: Thrombosis has been widely reported in coeliac disease (CD) but central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is rarely described.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old woman presented with acute visual loss and was diagnosed with CRVO. Her protein S and protein C levels were low and CD was diagnosed on the basis of endoscopic, immunological and histological results. A gluten-free diet resulted in favourable evolution.
CONCLUSION: CD should be considered in young patients with thrombosis, especially if in an unusual location. Treatment is based on a gluten-free diet.
LEARNING POINTS: Coeli

Retinal endothelial cells line the arborizing microvasculature that supplies and drains the neural retina. The anatomical and physiological characteristics of these endothelial cells are consistent with nutritional requirements and protection of a tissue critical to vision. On the one hand, the endothelium must ensure the supply of oxygen and other nutrients to the metabolically active retina, and allow access to circulating cells that maintain the vasculature or survey the retina for the presence of potential pathogens. On the other hand, the endothelium contributes to the blood-retinal barri

α-Crystallins are key members of the superfamily of small heat shock proteins that have been studied in detail in the ocular lens. Recently, novel functions for α-crystallins have been identified in the retina and in the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE). αB-Crystallin has been localized to multiple compartments and organelles including mitochondria, golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum and nucleus. α-Crystallins are regulated by oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum stress, and inhibit apoptosis-induced cell death. α-Crystallins interact with a large number of proteins that include other cry

BACKGROUND. Fractal analysis provides a global index of the geometric complexity and optimality of vascular networks. In this study, we investigated the relationship between fractal measurements of the retinal vasculature and chronic kidney disease (CKD). METHODS. This was a population-based case-control study which included participants from the Singapore Prospective Study Program. We identified 261 participants with CKD, defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate of <60 mL/min/1.73 m(2), and 651 controls. The retinal fractal dimension (D(f)) was quantified from digitized fundus photogra

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is one of the most common genetic disorders. A 21-year-old woman presented with temporary visual loss and gross hematuria. Fundoscopy showed retinitis pigmentosa, which was confirmed by electroretinogram. Her serum creatinine concentration was 1.6 mg/dl, and her renal ultrasonography revealed bilateral polycystic kidneys; she was unaware of having this condition. In this patient, there was probably an inherited ciliary defect, which may explain the association of ADPKD and retinitis pigmentosa.

Retinal vascular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity are major causes of visual loss. Although the focus of a great deal of research has been on the aetiology of vascular growth, it is now emerging that anomalies in other retinal cell types, especially glial cells, occur very early in the course of the disease. Glial cells have major roles in every stage of disease, from the earliest subtle variations in neural function, to the development of epi-retinal membranes and tractional detachment. Therefore, having a firm understanding of the function of retinal glia

Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) is the most severe form of inherited retinal dystrophy and the most frequent cause of inherited blindness in children. LCA is usually inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion, although rare dominant cases have been reported. One form of LCA, LCA4, maps to chromosome 17p13 and is genetically distinct from other forms of LCA. We recently identified the gene associated with LCA4, AIPL1 (aryl-hydrocarbon interacting protein-like 1) and identified three mutations that were the cause of blindness in five families with LCA. In this study, AIPL1 was screened for mut

A 39 year-old Behcet's patient had demyelination of retinal myelinated nerve fibers after recurrent papillitis and vitritis. Oral Prednisolone, cyclosporine, and later periocular corticosteroids and oral colchicine were used but demyelination continued over a 5 year-period. A pseudobulbar palsy with urinary incontinence and pyramidal tract signs developed and azathioprine and corticosteroids were used. Demyelination of retinal nerve fibers stopped and while treatment was underway, the central nervous system (CNS) signs were stable. While the ocular pathology of Behcet's can mirror the CNS sign

PURPOSE: Screening examinations for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) can be stressful to the premature infant. The temporal retina is the most easily visualized area of the peripheral retina. This study was undertaken to determine whether evaluation of the temporal peripheral retina provides a reliable indicator of the ROP status of the entire retina.
METHODS: A total of 690 ROP eye examinations were performed on 156 premature infants. Eye examinations of 95 patients were reviewed retrospectively and of 61 patients prospectively. All patients were born at less than 34 weeks estimated gestatio

Behçet's disease is a multisystem disorder affecting the skin, mucous membranes, eye, joints, central nervous system, and blood vessels. One of the known vascular complications of Behçet's disease is venous thrombosis or aneurysm formation. We report, herewith, a patient with Behçet's disease who developed radial artery aneurysm, deep venous thrombosis, and bilateral central retinal vein thrombosis. To our knowledge, this is the first report of bilateral central retinal vein thrombosis in association with Behçet's disease.

Embolization from the carotid bifurcation has been proposed as the most common cause of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) and branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO). The purpose of this study was to evaluate carotid artery disease in patients with CRAO and BRAO. Using carotid ultrasonography, 17 patients (13 males, 4 females, mean age 68.7 +/- 7.1 years) with CRAO and BRAO were examined for stenotic findings and plaque morphology (homogeneous or heterogeneous) within 7 days after onset. The internal carotid artery (ICA) ipsilateral to the affected side showed a significantly higher incid

This study was performed in order to verify the prevalence of retinal periphlebitis and other ocular changes in a well-defined population of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, and to correlate the presence of these features with some clinical variables which characterize the disease. 110 MS-affected subjects were submitted to a standard ophthalmologic examination including a biomicroscopical evaluation of the fundus oculi. The prevalence of retinal sheathing in MS patients was found to be nearly 36%. It is significantly higher in patients evaluated in an active phase of the disease than in thos
