PURPOSE: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a widely used antifibrinolytic agent that can also cause a decrease in vascular permeability. We hypothesized that TXA could improve macular edema (ME) that is caused by an increase in retinal vascular permeability. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of oral TXA for ME associated with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) or diabetic ME (DME).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Oral TXA (1,500 mg daily for 2 weeks) was administered to patients with persistent ME secondary to RVO (7 eyes) and DME (7 eyes). After 2 weeks (ie, the final day of administration) and 6 wee…

Aqueous humor levels of cytokines and growth/inflammatory factors were measured in 38 patients with macular edema who had major branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) or macular BRVO and were treated with intravitreal ranibizumab injection (IRI). Patients with recurrence of macular edema received further IRI as needed. Aqueous humor levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), soluble VEGF receptor-1 (sVEGFR-1), and other cytokines/factors were measured. Compared with major BRVO, macular BRVO was associated with lower aqueous humor levels of sVEGFR-1, its ligands (VEGF and placental grow…

Our previous study found that hyperhomocysteinemia was strongly associated with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in the Chinese population. The aim of this study is to determine whether MTHFR C677T mutation is an independent risk factor for CRVO in the Chinese population. A matched case-control study was conducted between July 2004 and May 2005. The study cohort consisted of 64 individuals that had been diagnosed with CRVO and 64 healthy controls (matched for age, gender, hypertension, smoking, and drinking habits). None of the cases or controls had a history of diabetes, glaucoma, medica…

BACKGROUND: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a significant retinal vascular disorder that has been hypothesized to increase the risk of cerebrovascular accidents (CVA). Given the shared vascular pathology between the retina and cerebral circulation, understanding the association between RVO and stroke incidence is critical for early intervention and risk management. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the risk of CVA, including ischemic and hemorrhagic subtypes, in patients with RVO.
METHODS: This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta…

To date, COVID-19 has no definite effective targeted therapy, and management is primarily supportive. Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is frequently caused by systemic risk factors posing hypercoagulable states. In April 2020, a female patient with a history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease presented with 2 days of loose, watery stools, nasal congestion and severe lethargy. The patient denied dyspnoea or fever. A week after the initial symptoms, the patient reported decreased vision from the left eye. Dilated funduscopy and fluorescein angiography suggested he…

This report describes the de novo appearance of a choroidal osteoma occurring 8 years after laser photocoagulation for previous branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). A 62-year-old man presented with an asymptomatic yellowish orange lesion in the macula on fundus examination of his left eye during a regular follow-up visit for bilateral BRVO associated with macular edema that had previously been treated with laser photocoagulation. The lesion was observed for 1.5 years until a decrease in vision occurred. Fundus photography revealed a yellow-to-orange, well-defined lesion in the macular region.…
