We studied the time course of astrocyte invasion and blood vessel formation in the developing ferret retina using glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-immunohistochemistry for astrocytes and isolectin B4 histochemistry for blood vessels. As in other mammals, strongly GFAP positive astrocytes invade the ferret retina from the optic nerve. PURPOSE: Idiopathic retinal vasculitis, aneurysms, and neuroretinitis (IRVAN) syndrome is a severe vision-threatening retinal vascular inflammatory disease. As a very rare condition, more reports of cases are needed to better guide diagnosis and management. We report a case of IRVAN initially refractory to adalimumab, rituximab, oral corticosteroids, subtenon triamcinolone injection, and intravitreal bevacizumab therapy that was successfully treated with infliximab and mycophenolate mofetil.

INTRODUCTION: Acute hypoxia poses a serious risk in military aviation because it can lead to impaired performance of safety-critical tasks. Early detection of hypoxia is therefore critical. Two illustrative cases of chronic branch retinal vein occlusion are presented with multimodal imaging, including commercially available optical coherence tomography angiography. In these two patients, retinal ischemia and collateral vessels were well imaged without the need to use traditional fluorescein angiography. Optical coherence tomography angiography provides useful information for the diagnosis and management of patients with branch retinal vein occlusion and other retinal vascular diseases.
