PURPOSE: Rickets is a condition characterized by a defective mineralization on the epiphyseal plate, either in the form of nutritional or congenital hypophosphatemic rickets, which could lead to progressive bone deformity. One of said deformities is angular growth of the knee which can cause permanent disfigurement. Hemiepiphysiodesis is a surgical option to correct the deformity, yet the studies evaluating its results are rare. This review aimed to map the literature pertaining to this topic.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed across five databases: Pubmed, Cochrane, ProQuest, Emb…

BACKGROUND: Tyrosinemia type I is a rare autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism caused by deficiency of fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase (FAH), an enzyme essential for the final breakdown of tyrosine. The enzyme defect leads to accumulation of toxic metabolites, primarily affecting the liver, kidneys, and brain. Typically, diagnosed in infancy due to acute or chronic liver dysfunction, refractory rickets is an uncommon presentation. We report a child with tyrosinemia type I presenting with refractory rickets and hepatosplenomegaly but with preserved liver function. CASE PRESENTATION: A th…

Nutritional rickets, once a historical disease, has reemerged in select pediatric populations despite modern food fortification efforts. While vitamin D deficiency remains the leading cause, dietary restrictions due to food allergies present a unique and underrecognized risk factor. This case report describes a 2-year-old male with multiple severe food allergies who developed vitamin D-deficient rickets due to a highly restrictive diet. His presentation, laboratory findings, radiographic abnormalities, and clinical management are discussed. Additionally, we provide a comprehensive review of th…

Renal tubular acidosis (RTA) is a group of disorders in which there is an alteration in acid-base homeostasis because of the impairment of nephrons to excrete hydrogen ions or reabsorb bicarbonate ions, resulting in chronic metabolic acidosis. RTA is an important cause of rickets, particularly 'resistant rickets'. Dental manifestations frequently reported in patients with RTA include enamel hypoplasia and amelogenesis imperfecta, affecting permanent dentition. To the best of our knowledge, the literature pertaining to the dental manifestations in RTA with secondary rickets is scarce. This case…

INTRODUCTION: Rickets is a disorder of defective bone mineralization resulting in skeletal deformities, growth retardation, and increased risk of fractures. Nutritional rickets, once a historical disease, has reemerged in select pediatric populations despite modern food fortification efforts. Many of the most common food allergens - dairy, eggs, and fish - are primary dietary sources of vitamin D, which presents a unique risk factor for development of rickets. Children with multiple food allergies are at a heightened risk, particularly if their diets are not adequately supplemented.

Elevated mortality and culling were reported from 7-day-old broilers in the U.K. Chicks in two affected houses showed clinical signs of weak … igh overall mortalities of approximately 15%. This is an unusual case of very early lameness due to rickets with metastatic visceral mineralization. The staining characteristics of the mineral deposits also provide interesting clues regarding their chemical nature.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and premature aging in children with nutritional rickets.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled children aged 6 months - 5 years with nutritional rickets attending a tertiary care hospital between January 2021 and August 2022. Mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and premature aging were assessed by measuring the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content, total antioxidant status (TAOS) and telomere length (TL) in 40 children with nutritional rickets and 40 age- and sex- matched healthy children without rickets (contr…

Scurvy is now considered to be a rare disease in European countries, even among children, but it still exists. We report the case of an 18-month-old boy who was initially hospitalized for a walking disorder and ultimately diagnosed with scurvy. Radiographs were compatible with rickets, but biological analysis ruled out this diagnosis. The vitamin C deficiency was due to an inadequate diet of a young child without any underlying conditions. This child was exclusively breastfed until the age of 17 months and his mother was also likely vitamin C deficient, as she had a diet lacking in fruits and …

BACKGROUND: The treatment and management of patients suffering from hypophosphatemic rickets (HR) remain a major challenge for dental practitioners and affected patients.
OBJECTIVES: To report a case of HR presenting with specific dental findings and to review the dental manifestations and treatment of HR patients.
METHODS: Case: A 32-year-old male presented with multiple dental abscesses and short stature. A thorough history was taken followed by clinical oral examination, and relevant radiological investigation was done. Literature research: In 2020, electronic literature searches were car…

Rickets is a disorder of bone development and can be the result of either dietary or genetic causes. Here, related pugs from 2 litters were included. Three pugs had clinical signs including, lameness, bone deformities, and dyspnea. One other pug was found dead. Radiographs of 2 affected pugs, 5 and 6 months old, showed generalized widening, and irregular margination of the physes of both the appendicular and the axial skeleton with generalized decrease in bone opacity and bulbous swelling of the costochondral junctions. Two pugs had low serum calcium and 1,25 (OH)2 D3 concentrations. Test resu…

BACKGROUND: X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH) is the most common cause of inherited rickets. Historically, XLH was treated with oral phosphate and calcitriol (conventional treatment). Burosumab, a fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) monoclonal antibody, was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2018 for XLH treatment. Nevertheless, conventional treatment of XLH continues to be recommended by some specialists due to lack of published experience with burosumab in the clinical setting. We compared laboratory and radiographic changes observed following transiti…

INTRODUCTION: Rickets is typically characterized by bone deformities due to defective bone mineralization and chondrocyte maturation in growing bones. However, infantile rickets often goes unrecognized, because the skeletal abnormalities are more subtle and often can only be detected radiologically. Nutritional rickets is a major public health concern in several regions worldwide. It is most commonly caused by vitamin D and/or calcium deficiency.
AREA COVERED: We provide an overview of historical perspective, epidemiology, and pathophysiology of nutritional rickets. Additionally, we outline d…

Vitamin D-resistant rickets shows the resistance to vitamin D (Vit-D) therapy, which traditionally works well in cases with deficiency rickets. The signs start appearing as early as in the first month of life and are characterised by the defective mineralisation at the ends of cartilage and bones despite having normal Vit-D levels in the serum. This case report highlights the dental and maxillofacial manifestations in a 3-year-old girl diagnosed with pseudo-Vit-D deficiency rickets. The report also highlights the variations in the dental manifestations of the condition reported in the literatu…

INTRODUCTION: Rickets is not an unusual diagnosis for pediatricians even currently in developed countries. Children typically present with leg bowing, enlargement of wrists, rachitic rosary (swelling of costochondral junctions) and/or waddling gait. But not every child with growth delay and enlarged metaphyses is diagnosed with rickets. Metaphyseal anadysplasia (MAD) is a disorder of variable severity with metaphyseal flaring and irregularities, without vertebral abnormalities. MAD is characterized by an early onset and a regressive course in late childhood without treatment, despite persisten…
