Dynamic Blood-Brain Barrier Regulation in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Whereas the diagnosis of moderate and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is readily visible on current medical imaging paradigms (magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] and computed tomography [CT] scanning), a far greater challenge is associated with the diagnosis and subsequent management of mild TBI (mTBI), especially concussion which, by definition, is characterized by a normal CT. To investigate whether the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is altered in a high-risk population for concussions, we studied professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters and adolescent rugby players. Addi…

A rare knee extensor mechanism injury: Vastus intermedius tendon rupture.

INTRODUCTION: Quadriceps tendon injuries are rare. There is a limited number of studies in the literature, reporting partial quadriceps tendon ruptures. We did not find any study reporting an isolated vastus intermedius tendon injury in the literature. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 22 years old professional rugby player with the complaints of pain in the right lower limb, decreased range of motion in right knee and a mass in the mid-anterior of the right thigh applied following an overloading on his hyperflexed knee during a rugby match. T2 sequence magnetic resonance images revealed discontinuity …

The effects of rule changes in football-code team sports: a systematic review.

Rule changes within football-code team sports aim to improve performance, enhance player welfare, increase competitiveness, and provide play … igibility criteria. Four different football codes were reported: Australian rules football (n = 4), rugby league (n = 6), rugby union (n = 16), soccer (n = 20). The most common category was physical performance and match-play characteristics (n = 22). Evidence appears at a high risk of bias partly due to the quasi-experimental nature of included studies …

Severe Talonavicular Osteoarthritis After a Neglected Navicular Stress Fracture: A Case Report.

CASE: A 17-year-old high school rugby player complained of right midfoot pain for 18 months. Radiographs showed severe osteoarthritic changes in the right talonavicular joint. A navicular fracture, talonavicular joint narrowing, a talar head cyst, and proximal navicular fragmentation were detected on computed tomography (CT). The patient underwent removal of the osteochondral fragments and fracture reduction and returned to rugby 8 months postoperatively. CT showed a remodeling of the talonavicular joint 2 years postoperatively. CONCLUSION: In a young athlete, reconstruction of the talonavicu…

Autonomic cardiovascular control and sports classification in Paralympic athletes with spinal cord injury.

Purpose To investigate the relationship between the classification systems used in wheelchair sports and cardiovascular function in Paralympic athletes with spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods 26 wheelchair rugby (C3-C8) and 14 wheelchair basketball (T3-L1) were assessed for their International Wheelchair Rugby and Basketball Federation sports classification. Next, athletes were assessed for resting and reflex cardiovascular and autonomic function via the change (delta) in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate (HR) in response to sit-up, and sympathetic skin responses (SSRs), respectively…

Complex, Displaced Intra-articular Scapular Fracture in a Young Athlete: A Case Report.

CASE: Intra-articular scapular fractures are rare injuries typically linked to high-energy trauma. We report a case of a 23-year-old male rugby player who sustained a comminuted, displaced intra-articular glenoid neck fracture with superior scapular border and coracoid involvement following a fall onto his adducted shoulder. He underwent open reduction and internal fixation using a lateral scapular body plate, achieving excellent intraoperative stability and range of motion. Postoperative recovery was remarkable, enabling return to rugby within a year. CONCLUSION: This case underscores the si…

Osteochondritis dissecans of the talus treated with the mosaicplasty technique: a case report.

The authors present the use of osteochondral autografting with mosaicplasty technique performed on a 20-year-old man for a large osteochondral talar dome lesion. The patient had sustained a right ankle sprain many times while playing rugby football. The lesion measured 15 mm in diameter and encompassed more than one-third of the articular surface. After exposing the talus to a medial malleolar osteotomy, 3 osteochondral grafts taken from the medial femoral condyle of the ipsilateral knee were press-fit into the lesion. One year postoperatively, the patient has returned to playing rugby footbal…

To jog or to stride: A comparison between two standardised running tests to monitor neuromuscular status in team sport athletes.

This study investigated: 1) monitoring post-match neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) status in rugby union players using two submaximal running tests (SRT); and 2) the sensitivity of each SRT to locomotor variables obtained during match-play. Twenty-three male rugby players (age: 21.0 ± 1.3 years; height: 185.2 ± 6.1 cm; body mass; 97.3 ± 10.3 kg) were monitored across one season (n = 71 player-match and 159 fatigue-players-testing observations). Two different SRTs (SRT-jog [5-minute shuttle run protocol] and SRT-stride [a repeat stride effort protocol]) were used to characterise post-match NMF, with…

Small Performance Effects of a Practical Mixed-Methods Cooling Strategy in Elite Team Sport Athletes.

Purpose: The ingestion of ice slurry and application of ice towels can elicit favorable physiological, perceptual, and performance benefits when used individually; however, the combined use and effectiveness of these practical cooling strategies have not been assessed using a sport-specific performance test, based on actual match demands, in an elite team sport context. Methods: Ten non-heat acclimated elite male rugby sevens athletes undertook two cycling heat response tests (HRT) designed to be specific to the demands of rugby sevens in hot conditions (35°C, 80% rH).
