The role of an Aboriginal women's group in meeting the high needs of clients attending outpatient alcohol and other drug treatment.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Support groups are typically offered as part of specialist alcohol or other drug treatment. However, their usefulness with Indigenous Australians has not been examined. This paper provides a profile of Aboriginal women attending an inner city outpatient alcohol and other drug treatment service, insight into how effective women and staff perceive the support group to be at meeting their needs and suggestions for improvements. DESIGN AND METHODS: Structured interviews were conducted with 24 Aboriginal female clients of an outpatient treatment service and with 21 staff fro

Passing through: meanings of survivorship and support among Filipinas with breast cancer.

Breast cancer among Filipinas in the United States is a major but largely neglected cancer disparity. In 2004, a community- university partnership resulted in the first Filipina breast cancer support group in the San Francisco Bay Area. Building on this partnership, we explored the social and cultural contexts of Filipinas' experiences with breast cancer to inform development of culturally appropriate and sustainable support services and outreach. We utilized multiple qualitative methods (participant observation, individual and small group in-depth qualitative interviews) to identify meanings

Recruitment for a guided self-help binge eating trial: potential lessons for implementing programs in everyday practice settings.

OBJECTIVE: To explore effects of various recruitment strategies on randomized clinical trial (RCT)-entry characteristics for patients with eating disorders within an everyday health-plan practice setting. METHODS: Randomly selected women, aged 25-50, in a Pacific Northwest HMO were invited to complete a self-report binge-eating screener for two treatment trials. We publicized the trials within the health plan to allow self-referral. Here, we report differences on eating-disorder status by mode and nature of recruitment (online, mail, self-referred) and assessment (comprehensive versus abbrevi

Families and Schools Together: an experimental study of multi-family support groups for children at risk.

We evaluated a multi-family support group intervention program in elementary schools. Kindergarten through third-grade children at eight urban schools in a Midwestern university community were universally invited to participate in the Families and Schools Together (FAST) program, and made up half of the study participants; the other half were K-3 children identified by teachers as having behavioral problems and being at risk for referral to special education services. Children were initially paired on the basis of five relevant matching variables, including teacher assessment of behavioral pro

Review of controlled psychotherapy treatment trials for binge eating disorder.

This paper reviews investigations of psychotherapy outcome studies for binge eating disorder, which has recently been intensively studied as several researchers have undertaken the task of delineating which treatment options are the most effective. Several randomized, controlled clinical trials have provided important findings. A current debate concerns what the initial course of treatment should be, reducing binge eating patterns or reducing weight. Several limitations to this literature are mentioned, including the dearth of studies investigating treatment for men and boys with binge eating

Attitudes concerning involuntary treatment of mania: results of a survey within self-help organizations.

PURPOSE: - The objective of the study was to determine the level of involuntary treatment that mood disorder patients and their families wish in the event of a manic or hypomanic episode. METHOD: - A survey was conducted within two self-help organizations during two conventions gathering over 500 patients, along with families and caregivers. A clinical vignette depicting an uncollaborative hypomanic patient beginning to endanger his professional and financial situation and to put undue stress upon his family was presented and followed by an eight-item questionnaire. The level of coercive trea

Victims' perceptions of social support: what is helpful from whom?

Although research has demonstrated that social interactions influence psychological well-being, little is known about what specific actions victims of stressful life events experience as helpful or unhelpful. Wortman and Dunkel-Schetter (1979) previously suggested that victims frequently experience rejection, withdrawal, and communication problems with those close to them. To address these issues, 55 cancer patients were interviewed concerning the specific actions they found to be helpful or unhelpful from several potential support providers: spouse, other family members, friends, acquaintance

Mutual support groups to reduce alcohol consumption by pregnant women: marketing implications.

This paper reports on a study of social support and alcohol consumption of 153 women during pregnancy. The majority of women changed their alcohol intake patterns during pregnancy because of concern for the health of the fetus. Most women decreased the amount and frequency of drinking and changed their beverage of choice. Social support was found to be significantly related to reduction in alcohol use during pregnancy. Social support came from relationships with specific individuals and groups of individuals. Health care providers may be able to extend the range of their work by designing spec

Factors associated with breastfeeding cessation in nursing mothers in a peer support programme in Eastern Lancashire.

BACKGROUND: The UK has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates worldwide and in recent years the Government has made breastfeeding promotion one of its priorities. The UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative is likely to increase breastfeeding initiation but not duration. Other strategies which involve provision of support for breastfeeding mothers in the early weeks after birth are therefore required to encourage UK mothers to breastfeed for the recommended duration. This paper examines the effects of maternal socio-demographic factors, maternal obstetric factors, and in-hospital infant feeding prac

Participation in community groups increases the likelihood of PrEP awareness: New Orleans NHBS-MSM Cycle, 2014.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) have the highest proportion of incident HIV infection. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use and screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are primary HIV prevention strategies, however, uptake remains low. Social capital, collective resources generated through social connections, are associated with lower HIV risk and infection. We investigated social capital in association with PrEP indicators among GBM. METHODS: Analyses included (N = 376) GBM from the 2014 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) in New Orlea

Mutual support groups for family caregivers of people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Italy: A pilot study.

Family caregivers of people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) live stressful lives in which they spend most of their time caring for their loved ones and managing difficult situations, thereby reducing the time spent in taking care of themselves. This situation may last several years. Previous literature has widely highlighted that this situation reduces caregivers' quality of life and increases their psychological distress and risk of health problems, but there is a lack of studies that focus on psychological interventions for these situations. This qualitative study examined a pilot e

Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD): FEMALE SURVIVORS' EXPERIENCES OF STRESS AND SUPPORT.

PURPOSE: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a nonatherosclerotic type of acute myocardial infarction that primarily affects young, healthy women without typical risk factors for heart disease. Few investigations have examined psychosocial variables in this population and none have looked at patient perceptions of the experience and stresses associated with having a SCAD event or the resources currently available to SCAD survivors. This investigation describes survivors' subjective experiences of SCAD. Participants also provided information about types and helpfulness of resources

Engaging mothers: Breastfeeding experiences recounted (EMBER). A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: There is an abundance of published literature that describes the short- and long-term effects of breastfeeding for both the infant and mother. Despite the majority of women having good intentions to breastfeed, challenges that they encounter place their breastfeeding journey in jeopardy. Improving breastfeeding rates and durations is a significant public health priority at a local, national and international level. AIM: This pilot study aimed to identify and describe participating women's breastfeeding experiences in order to better understand why some achieve their breastfeeding

Brief report: sociometric status and behavioral characteristics of peer nominated buddies for a child with autism.

We examined social and behavioral correlates of children selected by their peers to serve as peer buddies for an unfamiliar child with autism (CWA). Participants were 293 children from two public elementary schools who completed social status, behavioral, and peer buddy nomination measures. Peer buddy nominations for a CWA were related to: (a) perceived unpopularity; (b) being viewed as helpful and smart; and (c) lacking influence regarding popularity within the classroom. In contrast, peer buddy nominations for a typical boy were related to being viewed as popular, helpful, and self-confident
