Advanced footwear technology (AFT) has reshaped distance running performance, but concerns remain regarding its potential biomechanical impl … significant shoe condition effects were observed for contralateral pelvic drop or contact time. AFT shoes combining PEBA foam with a carbon-fiber plate improved running economy without increases in the biomechanical variables examined, which have been discussed in the literature in relation to running-related injuries. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) have shown promising outcomes for estimating gait event detection (GED) and ground reaction force (GRF). This study aims to determine the best sensor location for GED and GRF prediction in gait using data from IMUs for healthy and medial knee osteoarthritis (MKOA) individuals. In this study, 27 healthy and 18 MKOA individuals participated. Participants walked at different speeds on an instrumented treadmill. Five synchronized IMUs (Physilog®, 200 Hz) were placed on the lower limb (top of the shoe, heel, above medial malleolus, middle and front of tibia, and on

Sideward movements are associated with high incidences of lateral ankle sprains. Special shoe constructions might be able to reduce these injuries during lateral movements. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether medial compressible forefoot sole elements can reduce ankle inversion in a reactive lateral movement, and to evaluate those elements' influence on neuromuscular and mechanical adjustments in lower extremities. Foot placement and frontal plane ankle joint kinematics and kinetics were analyzed by 3-dimensional motion analysis. Electromyographic data of triceps surae, perone

Sever's injury (apophysitis calcanei) is considered to be the dominant cause of heel pain among children between 8 and 15 years. Treating Sever's injury with insoles is often proposed as a part of a traditional mix of recommendations. Using a custom-molded rigid heel cup with a brim enclosing the heel pad resulted in effective pain relief without reducing the physical activity level in our previous two studies. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of the heel cup on heel pad thickness and heel peak pressure (n=50). The difference in heel pad thickness and in heel peak pressure us

This study presented a systematic review of recent advancements in the application of finite element (FE) methods to running and running shoe biomechanics. It focused on outlining the general approach to build foot-running shoe FE models, exploring their current applications and challenges, and providing directions for future research. The review also aimed to highlight the gap between theoretical mechanical responses in simulations and real-world manifestations of running-related musculoskeletal injuries (RRMI). A comprehensive search of electronic databases, including Web of Science, PubMed,

Rearfoot disorders are frequently encountered in clinical practice. We reviewed common rearfoot disorders and present conservative treatments, focusing on shoe modification and the application of insoles or orthoses. Achilles tendinopathy is caused by excessive mechanical loads on the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. Heel lifts, rocker shoes, and the AirHeel Brace can be used to reduce symptoms. Haglund's deformity is an osseous prominence of the posterosuperior part of the calcaneus bone, the pain from which can be alleviated by reducing pressure on the affected area by appropriately modifyi…

BACKGROUND: Wearing high heel shoes is thought to increase an individual's likelihood of experiencing a lateral ankle sprain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of heel height on frontal plane kinematics, kinetics, and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the ankle joint during walking.
METHODS: Eighteen healthy women participated. Three-dimensional kinematics, ground reaction forces, and EMG signals of the tibialis anterior (TA) and peroneus longus (PL) were recorded as subjects ambulated in high (9.5~cm) and low (1.3~cm) heel shoes at a self-selected walking velocity. Pe…

A 40 year old woman presented with dermatitis mainly involving her dorsal feet and shins, a condition which was present for a prolonged period of time. The distribution was suggestive of allergic contact dermatitis, possibly to her shoes. Patch tests disclosed allergy to chromates, cobalt, colophony, all present in leather products, and allergy to myroxylon pereirae (Balsam of Peru). The patient was instructed to avoid wearing some of her shoes and sitting on her leather sofa. As a consequence, her symptoms ameliorated. This case demonstrates the importance of patch testing with correct interp…

Inserts are orthopedic aids in the treatment of foot disorders that result from changes of the static or dynamic situation. Provision of appropriate orthopedic devices can relieve the pain caused by forefoot deformities either in lieu of surgical intervention or in rare cases also following surgical treatment to improve the symptoms of residual pain.Available materials provide support, padding, and cushioning. Inserts are custom-made to measure and/or based on a plaster impression. Determining the indication, prescribing the inlay, and checking the orthosis are the tasks of the physician. One

The evaluation of a patient with a foot disorder should include a careful history and examination of the foot. A more extensive evaluation may be indicated as many systemic diseases may initially involve the foot. The patient's shoes are most important and frequently correlate well with the foot pathology. Appropriate radiographs which should including weightbearing views are essential, and selected laboratory studies may be indicated. Although it may be practical to divide the foot into the components of forefoot, midfoot, and hindfoot; these three areas are functionally connected. A deformit…

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers require offloading for healing. However, adherence with removable offloading devices is often poor. Prior objective measures of adherence yielded important behavioral insights, despite substantial methodological limitations. This study sought to address these limitations by developing a method to track offloading adherence during walking and standing paired with tracking contralateral therapeutic footwear (shoe-lift) use.
METHODS: Thirty healthy adults wore a removable cast walker (RCW) and contralateral shoe-lift. Accelerometers were placed on both and unilat

INTRODUCTION: Spiral diaphyseal fractures of the fifth metatarsal can present with significant displacement. It is considered that non-operative management is sufficient in most cases but there is no clear consensus as to what this may be. This study reports the functional outcome of this injury in a small patient cohort and is the first study to report on outcomes of different non-operative measures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 33 consecutive patients presenting to a central London teaching hospital who were managed by a variety of treatment modalities depending on

BACKGROUNDS: The effect of foot orthoses on plantar pressure distribution has been proven by researchers but there are some controversies about advantages of custom-made foot orthoses to less expensive prefabricated foot orthoses.
METHODS: Nineteen flatfeet adults between 18 and 45 participated in this study. CAD-CAM foot orthoses were made for these patients according to their foot scan. Prefabricated foot orthoses were prepared according to their foot size. Plantar pressure, force and contact area were measured using pedar®-x in-shoe system wearing shoe alone, wearing CAD-CAM foot orthoses
