Bony lesions of the glenoid and Hill-Sachs lesions are the most common injuries after a first-time traumatic shoulder dislocation. However, fracture of the coracoid process after traumatic shoulder dislocation is rare. A single, open surgical procedure could be performed by a Latarjet procedure using a fractured fragment of the coracoid process. If a fracture of the coracoid process is associated with a traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation, the Latarjet procedure may be the most appropriate surgical option.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the long-term clinical and radiological outcomes of operatively treated scapular fractures using the tissue-sparing posterior Brodsky approach. We hypothesized that osteosynthesis using this approach would yield favorable functional outcomes.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with acute scapular fractures treated operatively using the posterior Brodsky approach from January 2015 to December 2019. Radiologic evaluation included fracture classification and fracture union. Functional outcomes were assessed using the Constant-Murley Score (CMS),

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of posterior minimally invasive approach for internal fixation of displaced scapula fractures.
METHODS: Between January 2006 and December 2011, 16 patients with scapular fractures underwent surgical fixation by a minimally invasive approach, including 11 cases of displaced glenoid fractures and 5 cases of unstable scapular necklbody fractures. There were 12 males and 4 females, aged 35-69 years (mean, 53 years). The causes of injury were traffic accident in 10 cases, falling from height in 4 cases, and tumble in 2 cases. In 11 cases of displaced gle

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Combined proximal humerus fracture and glenohumeral dislocation in the pediatric population is extremely rare, with only few reports of such cases been reported. We review all cases of combined proximal humerus fracture and glenohumeral dislocation in the pediatric population and present a case of left proximal humerus fracture dislocation in a healthy 5-year-old girl.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old girl fell from 2 m height and landed on her left shoulder where she started to complain from severe left shoulder pain, inability to move her left shoulder and bruisi

This study reports on the after-examination of 86 out of 107 patients with primary shoulder dislocation. Of greatest interest was the question which period of immobilisation would yield the best results. The most frequent type of dislocation was the subcoracoid position in 62% of all cases. In 44% the dislocations were associated with fractures especially of the greater tuberosity. The greatest number of dislocations occurred between 61 and 80 years of age (= 42%). The second highest number was found between 21 and 40 years of age (= 29%). In 47% of all cases the shoulder was immobilised for a

Two-part surgical neck fractures are the most common displaced proximal humeral fractures in the elderly. Most fractures can be categorized into varus-impacted or medially translated fracture patterns. The natural healing process often involves secondary displacement and partial resorption of the humeral head, but these changes are poorly correlated with shoulder function and patient satisfaction. Randomized trials have been unable to identify any benefits from surgery but report a high proportion of implant-related complications. In large prospective cohort studies, patients aged 60 or older

Proximal humerus fractures occur frequently, especially in the aging population, and require a tailored approach considering patient-specific factors like age, activity level, and comorbidities. While nonoperative treatment is common, surgical options such as open reduction internal fixation, reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA), and hemiarthroplasty are available based on fracture complexity and patient needs. Recent studies highlight the potential benefits of acute rTSA over delayed procedures, emphasizing improved outcomes in range of motion and reduced complications. Treatment choice

OBJECTIVE: To compare posterior arm delivery and the shoulder shrug maneuver in shoulder dystocia.
METHODS: A prospective, randomized, simulation-based experimental study was conducted with six physicians managing 96 simulated shoulder dystocia cases. Participants included three obstetricians with more than 15 years of experience and three trainees. Variables collected included perineal pressure, maneuver time, simulated humeral fractures, first-attempt success, and perceived difficulty.
RESULTS: Posterior arm delivery exerted significantly less maximum perineal pressure than the shoulder sh

INTRODUCTION: Coracoid fractures are often missed since the fracture is not visualized in a routine anteroposterior view of the shoulder and special views are not ordered. Shoulder dislocation is common but it is rare to have a dislocation with a coracoid fracture. The purpose of this paper is to present the rare occurrence of bilateral coracoid fractures in a patient with unilateral anterior shoulder instability managed using the same fractured coracoid fragment by the latarjet procedure.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of 48 -year -old male who presented to us with a history of recurrent disl

The purpose of reporting this case is to illustrate a treatment plan for a chronically anteriorly dislocated shoulder associated with an ipsilateral humerus fracture, a condition heretofore not addressed in the literature to our knowledge. An 18-year-old female, left hand dominant, injured her left upper extremity and liver in a motor vehicle accident. X-rays at time of injury revealed a diaphyseal facture of her left humerus. No x-rays of the shoulder were taken at time of injury. Treatment consisted of a plaster cast application and discharge at 1 week. The patient was seen again 4 weeks pos

BACKGROUND: In the infant, shoulder injury due to birth trauma and infection in joint and bone may be difficult to detect radiographically. Shoulder ultrasound provides a dynamic, noninvasive method of evaluation.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a technique to evaluate the infant shoulder and to successfully demonstrate pathology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a multiplanar, dynamic technique, 24 normal and 12 symptomatic infants (age range, 3 days to 9 months) were examined (49 shoulders).
RESULTS: Sonographic findings were normal in 41 shoulders and abnormal in 8 shoulders. Abnormalities included su

The purpose of this prospective study was to determine the early subjective and functional result and outcome after primary implantation of humeral endoprosthesis in severely comminuted humeral head fractures in elderly patients. From 1993 to 1995, 27 humeral head fractures (27 patients) were treated by primary implantation of a Neer II modular shoulder prosthesis. Of these, 23 patients were women, 4 patients were men. The average age of patients was 76 (48-91) years. Postoperatively, one shoulder had to be mobilized under general anesthesia. Of the 27 patients 21 could be clinically examined

We reviewed 67 consecutive patients with fractures of the coracoid process, classifying them by the relationship between the fracture site and the coracoclavicular ligament. The 53 type-I fractures were behind the attachment of this ligament, and the 11 type-II fractures were anterior to it. The relationship of three fractures was uncertain. Type-I fractures were associated with a wide variety of shoulder injuries and consequent dissociation between the scapula and the clavicle. Treatment was usually by open reduction and fixation for type-I fractures and conservative methods for type-II. At f

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the clavicle are some of the most common fractures which are seen in the adult population. Mid-shaft fractures of the clavicle are considered the most common form of clavicle fractures and about half of them are displaced fractures. They have been managed non-operatively over the years. However, severe displacement and comminution of these fractures have warranted the requirement of operative intervention, due to increased incidence of mal-union, worsening of shoulder functions etc., after conservative management. The introduction of locking compression plates, have

OBJECTIVE: Displaced scapular fractures are uncommon injuries, and the optimal surgical approach remains controversial. Muscle-preserving techniques may improve post-operative shoulder function by minimizing soft-tissue damage. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the clinical and functional outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using a muscle-preserving modified Judet approach in displaced scapular fractures and to assess the effect of surgical timing on post-operative shoulder function.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 12 adult patients who underwent ORIF for

161 consecutive patients with traumatic shoulder luxation between 1975 and 1983 are followed, concerning their evolution to recurrent shoulder dislocation. In 26 patients there was a recurrent shoulder dislocation in a mean time of 19 months after the first luxation. In literature the common level of recurrent dislocation is higher than our 16.1%, despite of the shorter immobilising time after the first shoulder luxation in our center. When there is no evolution to recurrent dislocation, a stable shoulder and a normal shoulder function without pain can be expected in 95%. The compression fract

Neglected bilateral posterior shoulder dislocation is a rare injury caused primarily by an epileptic seizure. The injury is usually associated with a reverse Hill-Sachs lesion in the anteromedial aspect of the humeral head. The modified McLaughlin technique may avoid instability and osteoarthritis when 20 to 40% of the articular surface is affected by reverse Hill-Sachs. In this article, we present the clinical results of a case overlooked in the literature for the longest time, i.e., for 15 months. A 46-year-old male patient was receiving treatment for epilepsy for five years. There was no fa
