Interaction of sickle cell trait and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in Cameroon.

The prevalence of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and sickle cell trait was determined in 371 Cameroonian males and 668 male blood donors in Chicago. The number of males with both sickle cell trait and G6PD deficiency was significantly greater than expected (p less than 0.05) in Cameroon. The number of males with both sickle cell trait and G6PD deficiency in the Chicago population also exceeded the exptected number, although this was not statistically significant (p greater than 0.30). A young red cell population associated with the sickle cell gene leading to elevated G6PD…

Blood Donors with Thalassemic Trait, Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency Trait, and Sickle Cell Trait and Their Blood Products: Current Status and Future Perspective.

The use of blood products for different medical purposes has increased in recent years. To meet increasing demand, some blood centers allow volunteer donors with thalassemic trait, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD) trait, and sickle cell trait (SCT) to donate blood if their hemoglobin values fall within acceptable ranges and show no signs of hemolysis. Currently, there are no standard guidelines or policies regarding the use or management of blood products obtained from these donors. However, in recent years, there has been advanced research on eligible donors who have these …

Splenic Infarction in a Patient With Sickle Cell Trait Following High-Altitude Exposure.

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is a generally asymptomatic carrier condition but clinical complications are recognized. Splenic infarction from exposure to high altitude is one complication of sickle cell trait. We report a 53-year-old man who traveled to Mammoth Lakes, California, and experienced an onset of abdominal pain approximately seven hours after arrival. In the local emergency department, the patient was diagnosed with presumed SCT using the sickle cell solubility test. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) of the abdomen and pelvis obtained 12 hours after symptom onset was read as m…

Sickle Cell Trait Is a Risk Factor for Another Form of Altitude Illness.

Millet, Grégoire P, and Philippe Connes. Sickle cell trait is a risk factor for another form of altitude illness. High Alt Med Biol. 27:57-59, 2026.-Acute mountain sickness, high-altitude pulmonary edema, and high-altitude cerebral edema have been widely investigated. In this letter, we claim that beyond these three altitude illnesses, one cannot rule out an additional serious concern related to altitude exposure in a particular population; the individuals with sickle cell trait.

Multi-Organ Morphological Findings in a Humanized Murine Model of Sickle Cell Trait.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is caused by the homozygous beta-globin gene mutation that can lead to ischemic multi-organ damage and consequently reduce life expectancy. On the other hand, sickle cell trait (SCT), the heterozygous beta-globin gene mutation, is still considered a benign condition. Although the mechanisms are not well understood, clinical evidence has recently shown that specific pathological symptoms can also be recognized in SCT carriers. So far, there are still scant data regarding the morphological modifications referable to possible multi-organ damage in the SCT condition. Ther…

Differences in the Circulating Proteome in Individuals with versus without Sickle Cell Trait.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell trait affects approximately 8% of Black individuals in the United States, along with many other individuals with ancestry from malaria-endemic regions worldwide. While traditionally considered a benign condition, recent evidence suggests that sickle cell trait is associated with lower eGFR and higher risk of kidney diseases, including kidney failure. The mechanisms underlying these associations remain poorly understood. We used proteomic profiling to gain insight into the pathobiology of sickle cell trait. METHODS: We measured proteomics ( N =1285 proteins assayed by O…

Effect of Sickle Cell Trait on Total Hip Arthroplasty in a Matched Cohort.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear if sickle cell trait (SCT) carrier status conveys an increased risk for poor outcomes following total hip arthroplasty (THA). The purpose of this study is to compare short-term clinical outcomes of THA for patients with SCT vs matched controls. METHODS: Patient records were queried from the PearlDiver database using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revision and Current Procedural Terminology codes. Patients with SCT who underwent THA were matched 1:1 with controls across age, gender, Elixhauser Comorbidity Index, obesity, and US region. Thirt…

Sickle Cell Trait and Risk for Common Diseases: Evidence from the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell trait is typically considered benign. Although evidence remains inconsistent, recent studies suggest that it is associated with several common diseases. We systematically assessed associations of sickle cell trait with reported diseases in a large population-based cohort. METHODS: Study subjects were self-reported Blacks from the UK Biobank (UKB), a United Kingdom population-based cohort of subjects aged 40-69 years at recruitment in the United Kingdom. Sickle cell status was based on the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) or mutations in…

Hepatic Infarction in a Patient With Sickle Cell Trait Presenting With HELLP Syndrome.
