The patient was an 81-year-old man. Laparoscopic sigmoidectomy was performed for a sigmoid colon cancer(S, type 2, pT3[SS], INF a, Ly0, V0, BD1, Pn0, pPM0, pDM0, RM0, pN0, pM0, pStage Ⅲa, R0, Cur A). One year after the surgery, a blood test showed CEA as high as 68.9 ng/mL, and an abdominal enhanced computed tomography revealed a hepatic tumor showing marginal contrast in the 4th liver segment. Positron emission tomography showed an accumulation of SUVmax 19.0 at the same site, and a metastatic liver tumor was diagnosed. A laparoscopic medial hepatectomy was performed. Bleeding from the hepate

Cutaneous metastases from colorectal cancer are very rare. They appear in less than 0.5% of colorectal metastatic cases at time of initial diagnosis. They indicate disseminated disease and poor prognosis. We describe a case of 54 years old patient who presented with scalp, face and upper back cutaneous metastatic lesions derived from sigmoid cancer, 9 months prior to his initial diagnosis. Final diagnosis of cutaneous metastasis of sigmoid carcinoma was made based on fine needle aspiration cytology. An index of suspicion should be maintained with a low threshold for biopsy for any cutaneous no

A 73-year-old man underwent a screening colonoscopy, and a depressed lesion in the sigmoid colon was detected. Biopsy revealed a Group V lesion, and he was diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer. During surgery, there was dense adhesion of the appendix to the sigmoid colon, and sigmoidectomy combined with appendectomy was performed. However, pathological examination revealed goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix with direct invasion into the sigmoid colon. To the best of our knowledge, no similar cases have been reported in Japan. Additional surgery with lymph node dissection was recommended, but

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in China. The incidence of CRC has been increasing in recent years. The aim of this study was to explore the incidence trends and the age distribution of CRC by subsite in Guangzhou between 2000 and 2011.
METHODS: A total of 22,432 incident cases of CRC between 2000 and 2011 from Guangzhou Cancer Registry were identified. Crude incidence and age-standardized rates (ASRs), using the Segi's world standard population, were calculated for CRC and CRC subsites. The incidence trend was analyzed and the annual percentage change (A

Colonic adenocarcinoma revealed by metastatic anorectal fistula is rare, with few cases in the literature. Such lesions can be taken for the more common manifestation of a benign perianal abscess or fistula. Once diagnosed, the management of such conditions remains controversial. We herein report two cases with perianal fistula that were subsequently found to have developed perianal adenocarcinoma on biopsy. Further colonic investigation revealed a rectosigmoid adenocarcinoma. Histology and immunohistochemical staining was identical in both primary and metastatic tumors. Preoperative chemoradi

The heart is an unusual site of metastasis from any malignancy. We report a case of cardiac metastasis from colorectal cancer. A 70-year-old woman was referred with a presumptive diagnosis of sigmoid colon cancer with cardiac myxoma. Two-dimensional echocardiography showed a 4 cm x 4.5 cm mobile mass on the lateral right atrial wall, and computed tomography revealed a low attenuated lobulating mass in the right atrium. The patient underwent anterior resection for sigmoid colon cancer (T4N2). Thereafter, she experienced progressive shortness of breath. Therefore, a cardiac operation was perform

Multiple regional metastases due to colon cancer usually show poor prognosis. Various treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy are not sufficient, and the outcome is generally poor in many cases. We report here on a patient with multiple regional metastases who was successfully treated with several therapies and remains still alive. A 69-year-old man presented with fever and epigastralgia. A colonoscopy revealed primary sigmoid colon cancer. A computed tomography showed multiple hepatic metastases, and metastases to supraclavicular, mediastinal and para-aortic regional lymph nodes

CT and MR imaging are of minor importance for the preoperative diagnosis of rectosigmoid carcinoma. A synchronous colon tumor can be excluded with a barium enema, while an accurate diagnosis of liver metastases is possible using real-time ultrasonography. However, post-operative management requires the use of tomographic methods: MR imaging has proved to be more accurate than CT for differentiation between local recurrence and post-operative scars. Therefore MRI should be the method of choice after surgery for rectosigmoid carcinoma in all patients without postoperative baseline examinations.

A 10-month-old boy had episodes of apparent colic with bloody diarrhea. On investigation after prolapse of a rectal mass, a pedunculated polyp was found and removed by transanal ligation. The abdominal pain had been caused by the polyp intussuscepting the sigmoid colon into the rectum. Although rectal bleeding in children under age 1 is rarely caused by rectal polyps, physicians should consider this diagnosis in children of any age when recurrent colic and blood-streaked diarrhea occur.

BACKGROUND: Distal adenomas have been considered markers of proximal neoplasms. It also has been suggested that patients with small, distal adenomas do not require proximal examination of the colon. This study was conducted to determine the validity of the latter recommendation.
METHODS: From a total of 5,132 colonoscopies performed between 1976 and 1999, all patients from whom adenomas were removed were included. Those with previous colon resections or incomplete cecal intubation were excluded. Proximal adenomas were defined as those proximal to the sigmoid colon. Adenomas were considered ad

Malignant neoplasms of the colon, rectum, and anus are relatively uncommon in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This paper documents the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre tumor registry colorectal cancer data base. Between June 1975 and December 1989, 622 patients were registered with malignant colorectal and anal tumors. There were 383 males and 239 females. The average ages were 53.5 years and 47.8 years. The majority of patients were Saudi. The single most common site for large bowel malignancy was the rectum. There were 455 simple adenocarcinomata, 39 mucinoud adenocarcinomata

INTRODUCTION: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare and aggressive soft tissue sarcomas. Its occurrence in the gastrointestinal tract, particularly in the sigmoid colon, is exceptionally uncommon and poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 46-year-old female who presented with a four-year history of intermittent rectal bleeding and lower abdominal pain. A diagnostic workup, including imaging and colonoscopy, revealed a large ulcerated polypoid mass at the rectosigmoid junction. The definitive diagnosis of MPNST w

A 75-year-old women was admitted to our hospital due to anal bleeding from 5 days. At clinical examination abdomen was soft but tenderness in the lower quadrants, where a soft, mobile, round mass measuring 10 cm in diameter was palpable. CT scan demonstrated the presence of sigmoido-rectal intussusception. The patient underwent emergency anterior resection of rectum with stapled termino-terminal colo-rectal anastomosis. Postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged 7 days after the operation. Histopathological examination demonstrated a tubular adenoma with low grade dyspl

BACKGROUND: Actinomycosis is a rare chronic invasive disease caused by Actinomyces spp. Although abdominopelvic actinomycosis, which involves the colon and the pelvic organs extensively, has been frequently reported, abdominopelvic actinomycosis presenting with colon perforation and hepatic involvement concurrently has yet to be reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old woman presented at the emergency room with squeezing epigastric pain. Palpation of the abdomen revealed a hard mass with no acute peritoneal signs. Vital signs were normal range except for tachycardia. Initial laboratory test
