Dermatology for pediatric skin of color is the application of dermatology to the genetically diverse and distinctive segment of the pediatric population that includes children of non-White racial and ethnic groups with increased pigmentation including individuals of Asian, Hispanic/LatinX, African, Native American, Pacific Island descent, indigenous people among others with overlap in particular individuals, and mixtures thereof. The discipline of pediatric skin of color can be challenging with difficulty in diagnosis of common conditions due to underlying pigmentation, variations in common ha

Cutaneous deposition disorders represent an array of conditions resulting from the accumulation of endogenous and exogenous substances withi … ent in the skin. Hemochromatosis is a systemic disorder that can be inherited or acquired, altering skin pigmentation in more than 90% of patients. PCT can be an initial manifestation of hemochromatosis. Argyria is an acquired disorder of silver deposition that can also cause pigmentation similar to ochronosis. These uncommon but not rare disorders may resemble and …

It has been proposed that melasma is a photoageing skin disorder. The photoaged fibroblasts have been suggested as an important source of melanogenic factors which are involved in the regulation of pigmentation. To investigate whether melasma includes senescent cells, lesional and perilesional normal skin from 38 melasma patients was assessed using a cell senescence marker, p16INK4A . The results showed that lesional dermal skin had more p16INK4A -positive senescent cells than perilesional skin. The impact of senescent fibroblasts was further investigated in a pilot study using radiofrequency

Free flap reconstruction of the head and neck is a widespread procedure. The aesthetic outcome is frequently compromised by color mismatch between the donor site skin and the complex pigmentation of the face. Various surgical procedures have been described to improve the appearance of external skin paddles. Medical tattooing is commonly used for nipple pigmentation in breast reconstruction and cosmetic procedures such as permanent makeup. This article describes the technique and its application to head and neck reconstruction. Medical tattooing can be used to improve the cosmetic appearance of

Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) allows noninvasive imaging of the epidermis and superficial dermis. Like dermoscopy, RCM acquires images in the horizontal plane (en face), allowing assessment of tissue pathology underlying dermoscopic structures of interest at a cellular-level resolution. Thus, clinicians using dermoscopy may find RCM to be particularly useful. Our aim was to show the value of RCM for diagnosis and management decisions related to pigmented and nonpigmented skin neoplasms seen in daily practice. Six cases of clinically and dermoscopically equivocal skin lesions, for which

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignant skin tumor, constituting 80% of nonmelanocytic skin tumors. Intermittent exposure to ultraviolet radiation is considered a major risk factor for BCC. This study was done in 2023 at a tertiary care cancer centre in North India. Pigmented BCC is a rare entity, a histopathological and clinical variant of BCC. This entity belongs to the category of nonmelanocytic skin tumors but exhibits increased pigmentation. Increased pigmentation also creates suspicion of melanocytic tumors, seborrheic keratosis, and Discoid Lupus Erythematosus DLE. Howev

To describe the phenotype of Dutch patients with oculocutaneous albinism type 4 (OCA4), we collected data on pigmentation (skin, hair, and eyes), visual acuity (VA), nystagmus, foveal hypoplasia, chiasmal misrouting, and molecular analyses of nine Dutch OCA4 patients from the Bartiméus Diagnostic Center for complex visual disorders. All patients had severely reduced pigmentation of skin, hair, and eyes with iris transillumination over 360 degrees. Three unrelated OCA4 patients had normal VA, no nystagmus, no foveal hypoplasia, and no misrouting of the visual pathways. Six patients had poor vis

Screening for tyrosinase (TYR) inhibitors potentially useful for control of skin pigmentation has been hampered by the limited availability of human TYR. To overcome this hurdle, we have established human embryonic kidney (HEK293)-TYR cells that constitutively express human TYR. In the current study, we assayed human TYR inhibition activities of 50 plant extracts using the lysates of transformed HEK293-TYR cells. The strongest inhibition of human TYR was shown by the extract of Vaccinium bracteatum Thunberg, followed by the extract of Morus bombycis Koidzumi. The former extract did not inhibit…

UNLABELLED: The term cutis tricolor describes the uncommon co-existence of congenital hyper- and hypopigmented macules, in close proximity to each other, in a background of normal skin so far seen in a 17-year-old patient with various other congenital defects. The suggested explanation for this phenomenon is allelic twin spotting. We report on two boys, aged 6 and 11 years, with an unusual combination of three different degrees of pigmentation, one of whom had in addition, psychomotor delay, dysmorphic features, musculoskeletal abnormalities and subcortical and periventricular white matter hig

Vitiligo is characterized by the loss of skin pigmentation due to the destruction of melanocytes. Its treatment is usually difficult. For stable cases, melanocyte transplantation is the method of choice. A newly developed treatment with recombined human/porcine skin methodology, permitting easy handling of the graft, is described in the present work. In five vitiligo patients, autologous epidermal cells were obtained from pigmented thin skin biopsies. The cells were cultured on a dried cell-free porcine dermis by the 3T3 feeder layer technique. After 10 days melanocytes were regularly disperse…

In subjects older than 25-30 years the number of enzymatically active melanocytes detectable by the dopa reaction decreases by about 10-20% per decade, with exposed skin having approximately twice as many pigment cells as unexposed skin. Chronic exposure to sunlight may stimulate the epidermal melanocyte system rather than accelerating chronological ageing. The number of melanocytic naevi declines with age. Despite the decreased melanocyte density, photoaged skin has irregular pigmentation and, frequently, there is hyperpigmentation. This may be due to greater positivity of dopa of chronically

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin disorder caused by excessive melanogenesis and uneven dispersion of melanin in the skin. To combine multiple active agents with an efficient transdermal drug delivery system is an effective strategy to combat UV induced skin pigmentation. In this work, Arbutin (Arb) and Vitamin C (Vc) mixed in 1:1 were found to have the greatest inhibition effects on melanogenesis and tyrosinase activity in B16 murine melanoma cells. And hyaluronic acid (HA) based dissolving microneedles array (DMNA) was employed to overcome the skin barriers for improved topical drug deliver…

The purpose of this study is to compare by chromametric analysis the changes seen in normal skin and solar lentigos after exposure to sunlight. The color measurements were made with a Minolta CR200 chromameter and expressed in the L*a*b* system, which allows a color to be quantified according to 3 axes: white-black (L*), red-green (a*) and yellow-blue (b*). In order to better assess the sensitivity of physiological mechanisms involved in this pigmentation, we chose the weakest conditions of sunlight: the first series of measurements were made at the end of the winter (March) on areas rarely ex

BACKGROUND: Photoaged skin is primarily induced by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation, leading to increased pigmentation, reduced elasticity, and pronounced wrinkles. There has been an increasing recognition of the influence of nutrition on skin health, with dietary elements emerging as a viable alternative approach to preventing photoaging. This study explores how oral supplementation impacts photoaged skin, hydration, and elasticity.
AIMS: This study evaluates the effects of an antioxidant-rich synbiotic supplement on facial elasticity, hydration, and photoaging markers, such as er

There is an increasing recognition of ethnic dermatology to reflect the increase in skin of colour (SOC) populations in the UK. Hyperpigmentary disorder is one of the commonest skin concerns in SOC but there has been limited training available in this field of dermatology. Variations in skin colour are genetically determined by the amount of melanin content, the eumelanin/pheomelanin ratio and the size of melanosomes, but is also influenced by other factors such as hormones and extrinsic factors such as ultraviolet radiation. Hyperpigmentation is a broad term to describe increased pigmentation
