Cutaneous vascular and core temperature responses to sustained cold exposure in hypoxia.

We tested the effect of hypoxia on cutaneous vascular regulation and defense of core temperature during cold exposure. Twelve subjects had two microdialysis fibres placed in the ventral forearm and were immersed to the sternum in a bathtub on parallel study days (normoxia and poikilocapnic hypoxia with an arterial O(2) saturation of 80%). One fibre served as the control (1 mM propranolol) and the other received 5 mM yohimbine (plus 1 mM propranolol) to block adrenergic receptors. Skin blood flow was assessed at each site (laser Doppler flowmetry), divided by mean arterial pressure to calculate

Bimodal relationship of human tremor and shivering on introduction to cold exposure.

Four subjects were exposed to an environmental challenge of -12 degrees C for 15 min in four conditions of exposure: 1) clothed body and clothed arm, 0.5 clo units: 2) clothed body and exposed arm, 0.4 col; 3) exposed body and exposed arm, 0.1 clo: 4) exposed body and clothed arm, 0.2 clo. Core temperature, surface temperature of the right arm, perceived thermal comfort, EMG indicated onset of shivering, and the frequency of tremor using accelerometry were monitored and data collected every 30 s. The results indicate that tremor frequency significantly increases with cold exposure, but that a

The role of peripheral Na(+) channels in triggering the central excitatory effects of intravenous cocaine.

While alterations in dopamine (DA) uptake appear to be a critical mechanism underlying locomotor and reinforcing effects of cocaine (COC), many centrally mediated physiological and affective effects of this drug are resistant to DA receptor blockade and are expressed more quickly following an intravenous (i.v.) injection than expected based on the dynamics of drug concentration in the brain. Because COC is also a potent local anesthetic, its rapid action on Na+ channels may be responsible for triggering these effects. We monitored temperatures in the nucleus accumbens, temporal muscle and skin

Feeding site selection in Rhodnius prolixus nymphs, American trypanosomiasis vector.

Thermal cues are fundamental for host-seeking in kissing bugs, primary vectors of American trypanosomiasis. Host surface temperature may reflect underlying vascular richness, potentially guiding feeding site selection. In this study, we investigated whether Rhodnius prolixus nymphs preferentially select specific regions of a mammalian host and whether local skin temperature influences this choice. Nymphs from first to fifth instars were allowed to feed on anesthetized mice, and insect densities were recorded across distinct body regions (head, lateral abdomen, paws and tail). Mouse body temper…

Metabolic and febrile responses to typhoid vaccine in humans: effect of beta-adrenergic blockade.

Fever and activation of acute phase responses were induced in human volunteers by intramuscular injection of typhoid vaccine. Vaccine injection caused a rapid (within 1 h) and sustained rise in metabolic rate (peak response 16%, 6-8 h), followed by later increases in white blood cell count (3-4 h), skin temperature (4-5 h), oral temperature (5-6 h), heart rate (6-8 h), and plasma cortisol (5-8 h). A peak fever [1.2 +/- 0.2 degree C (SE) rise] was recorded 12 h after vaccine injection. The involvement of the sympathetic nervous system in the development of these responses was investigated by th…

Clinical safety trial of a thermal jacket among preterm or low birthweight neonates for hypothermia management at a tertiary-level health facility in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia is a common and critical issue for preterm and low birthweight (LBW) neonates, who require effective thermal care management to survive. In a safety trial, we tested a thermal jacket comprising a reusable chemical warming pad and an insulating jacket designed for hypothermia management when skin-to-skin contact is not possible. We assessed its performance in maintaining neonates' body temperature within the euthermic range (36.5°C to 37.5°C) and evaluated whether it caused any adverse effects. METHODS: We conducted a single-arm, open-label safety trial at a tertiary-le

A flexible multimodal pulse sensor for wearable continuous blood pressure monitoring.

Monitoring of arterial blood pressure via cuffless pulse waveform measurement at the wrist has an important clinical value for the early diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular disease. However, accurate measurement of the radial pulse waveform is challenging owing to its subtle, wideband, and preload-dependent variation characteristics. Evidence shows that uncertainties or variations of wearing pressure and skin temperature can cause artifact signals in wrist pulse measurements, thus degrading blood pressure estimate accuracy and hindering precise clinical diagnosis. Herein, we report a fl…

A Degradable-Renewable Ionic Skin Based on Edible Glutinous Rice Gel.

Traditional wearable devices are commonly nonrecyclable and nondegradable, resulting in energy waste and environmental pollution. Here, a household degradable and renewable ionic skin based on edible glutinous rice gel is developed for a strain, temperature and salivary enzyme activity sensor. This gel depends on intermolecular and intramolecular H-bonds among amylopectin and amylose, and this presents excellent skin-like properties, including stretchability, self-healing property, and adhesion to various substrates. The glutinous rice gel-based skin sensor can be used to monitor vital signs a

Afferent thermosensory function in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis following exercise-induced increases in body temperature.

What is the central question of this study? Between 60 and 80% of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients experience transient worsening of symptoms with increased body temperature (heat sensitivity). As sensory abnormalities are common in MS, we asked whether afferent thermosensory function is altered in MS following exercise-induced increases in body temperature. What is the main finding and its importance? Increases in body temperature of as little as ∼0.4°C were sufficient to decrease cold, but not warm, skin thermosensitivity (∼10%) in MS, across a wider temperature range than in age-matched hea

An improved Peltier effect-based instrument for critical temperature threshold measurement in cold- and heat-induced urticaria.

BACKGROUND: Cold- and heat-induced urticaria are chronic physical urticaria conditions in which wheals, angioedema or both are evoked by skin exposure to cold and heat respectively. The diagnostic work up of both conditions should include skin provocation tests and accurate determination of critical temperature thresholds (CTT) for producing symptoms in order to be able to predict the potential risk that each individual patient faces and how this may be ameliorated by therapy. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate TempTest(®) 4, a simple and relatively inexpensive instrument for the accurate det

Evaluation of Ear Thermographic Imaging as a Potential Variable for Detecting Hypocalcemia in Postpartum Holstein Dairy Cows.

Hypocalcemia is common in dairy cows within the first 72 h post-calving, and can be either clinical or subclinical. Early detection is critical, but traditional laboratory tests are time-consuming and cow-side tests remain costly. A classic symptom of hypocalcemia is reduced ear skin temperature, which has been explored as a diagnostic tool in a previous study, but was not recommended at the end. Additionally, ambient temperature was found to strongly influence ear skin temperature, complicating diagnosis. The present study investigates infrared thermography of the ear as a potential non-invas…

The contribution of cutaneous thermal signals to bodily self-awareness.

Thermosensory signals may contribute to the sense of body ownership, but their role remains highly debated. We test this assumption within the framework of pathological body ownership, hypothesising that skin temperature and thermoception differ between right-hemisphere stroke patients with and without Disturbed Sensation of Ownership (DSO) for the contralesional plegic upper limb. Patients with DSO exhibit lower basal hand temperatures bilaterally and impaired perception of cold and warm stimuli. Lesion mapping reveals associations in the right Rolandic Operculum and Insula, with these region…

PEDOT:PSS-Based Wearable Flexible Temperature Sensor and Integrated Sensing Matrix for Human Body Monitoring.

Flexible temperature sensors have been widely used in electronic skins and health monitoring. Body temperature as one of the key physiological signals is crucial for detecting human body's abnormalities, which necessitates high sensitivity, quick responsiveness, and stable monitoring. In this paper, we reported a resistive temperature sensor designed as an ultrathin laminated structure with a serpentine pattern and a bioinspired adhesive layer, which was fabricated with a composite of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate)/single-wall carbon nanotubes/reduced graphene oxide (P

Heat stroke: report on 18 cases.

Eighteen hyperpyrexial patients with a mean rectal temperature of 42.3 degrees (range 41.2-43.1 degrees C) were rapidly cooled in a unit producing evaporative cooling from a warm skin. Sixteen patients recovered, and two, who were diabetic, died. The time taken for the core temperature to drop to 38 degrees C varied from 26 min to 5 h. The success of a treatment which maintained vasodilatation by warming the skin accords with the hypothesis that peripheral vasoconstriction combined with a high metabolic heat output is a major factor in the pathogenesis of heat stroke.

Measuring facial cooling in outdoor windy winter conditions: an exploratory study.

Winter clothing provides insulation for almost all of a person's body, but in most situations, a person's face remains uncovered even in cold windy weather. This exploratory study used thermal imagery to record the rate of cooling of the faces of volunteers in a range of winter air temperatures and wind speeds. Different areas of the faces cooled at different rates with the areas around the eyes and neck cooling at the slowest rate, and the nose and cheeks cooling at the fastest rate. In all cases, the faces cooled at an approximately logarithmic decay for the first few minutes. This was follo
