Amblyopia secondary to iris cyst.

CLINICAL CASE: A 5 year-old child diagnosed with moderate anisometropic amblyopia secondary to primary cyst of iris pigment epithelium. He was evaluated with ultrasound biomicroscopy (BMU) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) of anterior segment. DISCUSSION: The OCT, although with some limitations, is a useful tool to study the anterior segment. It is probably more recommendable than BMU in the childhood.

Nivolumab-associated immune-related filamentary keratitis.

A woman in her late 50s presented to the ophthalmology clinic having bilateral eye pain and discharge for the last month. Her medical history was significant for lung adenocarcinoma, for which she was being treated with nivolumab. Filamentary keratitis was evident at the slit-lamp examination. Regardless of ophthalmic reasons, nivolumab was suspended. Prednisolone ointment was started, with a complete remission. We present a case of steroid-responsive filamentary keratitis triggered by nivolumab. We aim to highlight the importance of prompt ophthalmology referral and the use of therapies targe

Partial and Total Descemet's Detachments in a Patient with Severe Terrien's Marginal Degeneration and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

A 16-year-old female with juvenile idiopathic arthritis presented with a one-month history of decreasing vision and increasing corneal edema in her left eye. Slit-lamp examination, keratometric measurements, and OCT evaluation led to a diagnosis of Terrien's marginal degeneration in both eyes along with a complete detachment of Descemet's membrane in the left eye and partial detachment in the right eye. She was treated with an intracameral injection of air and then topical betamethasone and chloramphenicol which lead to the resolution of symptoms. We further examine the pathophysiology of this

In vivo confocal microscopy in a case of pterygium.

Pterygium is a frequent ocular surface disorder of unknown origin characterized by chronic conjunctival inflammation with a clear central cornea in most patients. A 35-year-old man affected by pterygium in the right eye presented with unremarkable slit-lamp examination of the central cornea, in which in vivo confocal microscopy showed a significant alteration of the superficial epithelial cells, numerous dendritic-like cells in the basal epithelial layer, and loss of keratocytes in the stroma. In vivo confocal microscopy may be helpful in evaluating the immunological and structural changes of

Keratoconus in two pairs of identical twins.

We studied two sets of identical twins with keratoconus. The first 21-year-old pair had bilateral fully developed keratoconus and the second 35-year-old pair presented with early bilateral keratoconus detected by videokeratography. To our knowledge, these are the seventh and eighth sets of identical twins with keratoconus reported in the literature. They support the evidence of heredity as a factor in the etiology of keratoconus. Videokeratography proved to be a valuable adjunct for the detection of early keratoconus in a cornea with normal slit-lamp microscopy and photokeratoscopy results. Ra

Quantifying visual field damage caused by cataract.

We studied the influence of cataracts on visual fields in 36 eyes of 36 patients before and after cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation. Lens opacity was quantified with a slit-lamp system. The influence of cataracts on the visual fields was slightly but statistically significantly larger in the central than in the midperipheral region. Lens opacity had a high correlation with the visual field changes and moderate but still significant correlation with changes in visual acuity. Measurement of stray light back scattered from the cataractous lens allowed prediction of the influe

[Biological compatibility of polyurethan (PUR) (author's transl)].

After implantation of a disc (thickness: 0.25 mm, diam: 1.5 mm) of PUR in the anterior chamber of rabbits through a lancet incision, the reactions of iris, aqueous, and cornea were observed for six months at regular intervals using slit-lamp photography. 'Steeping' materials were as compatible as nonsteeping materials. At the place where the disc touched the iris one could see during a half-year period hyperemia iridis and foreign-substance granuloma of the iris. The cause of these reactions is a toxin in the PUR. Mechanical irritants as a cause could be excluded through the method utilized in

Seeing the invisible: the challenge of imaging vitreous.

Imaging the vitreous is an attempt to view what is by design invisible. The inability to adequately image vitreous hinders a more complete understanding of its normal structure and function and how these change in aging and disease. The combined use of more than one technique could provide better imaging for investigational and clinical purposes. Past and present imaging methodologies are summarized and research and clinical techniques that are currently in development for future applications, are discussed. Dark-field slit microscopy has been used to characterize vitreous anatomy, both within

Multiplanar AS-OCT Detection of Clinically Occult Posterior Gas Bubble Dislocation After DSAEK.

Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) is a well-established surgical technique for the treatment of endothelial dysfunction, in which intracameral gas tamponade plays a critical role in graft adherence. We report the case of a 67-year-old pseudophakic woman with advanced Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy and symptomatic pseudophakic bullous keratopathy in the right eye, who presented with progressive visual deterioration and underwent DSAEK using an 8.25 mm donor graft inserted with a Busin glide and tamponaded with a 25% sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas-air mixture.
