INTRODUCTION: Daboia siamensis envenoming is a major cause of hematotoxicity and acute kidney injury in Southeast Asia. In Thailand, D. siamensis is a clinically important snake, yet detailed national data on its bites are limited. Hence, we aimed to determine the clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of D. siamensis bites in Thailand, identify factors associated with acute kidney injury and hemodialysis, and analyze antivenom administration with reference to acute kidney injury and hemodialysis.
METHODS: We conducted a 10-year retrospective cross-sectional study using data from

We report here the antiproteolytic and antihemorrhagic properties of triterpenoid saponin inhibitors, named macrolobin-A and B, from Pentaclethra macroloba, against Bothrops snake venoms. The inhibitors were able to neutralize the hemorrhagic, fibrin(ogen)olytic, and proteolytic activities of class P-I and P-III metalloproteases isolated from B. neuwiedi and B. jararacussu venoms. Clotting and fibrinogenolytic activities induced by snake venoms and isolated thrombin-like enzymes were partially inhibited. Furthermore, the potential use of these inhibitors to complement antivenom therapy as an a

In Nigeria, Mucuna pruriens seeds are locally prescribed as an oral prophylactic for snake bite and it is claimed that when two seeds are swallowed they protect the individual for a year against snake bites. In order to understand the Mucuna pruriens antisnake properties, the proteins from the acqueous extract of seeds were purified by three chromatographic steps: ConA affinity chromatography, tandem anionic-cationic exchange and gel filtration, obtaining a fraction conventionally called gpMucB. This purified fraction was analysed by SDS-PAGE obtaining 3 bands with apparent masses ranging from…

Every year, dogs are presented to veterinary clinics in the Netherlands after having been bitten by a viper. The viper is the only venomous snake native to the Netherlands. Clinical signs after an acquired viper bite can range from none (after a 'dry' bite) to very mild up to life threatening following a 'wet' bite. To prevent mortality it is important to monitor the animals for a period of time and provide adequate treatment. Clotting disorders and multiple organ failure can occur several days to a week after the viper bite, appropriate follow up is therefore important. In the Netherlands, a

BACKGROUND: India suffers ~58,000 annual deaths due to snakebites. The 'Big Four' snakes (Russell's viper, Indian cobra, common krait, and saw-scaled viper) that are responsible for most bites cause diverse clinical effects. Delayed treatment increases the risk of serious complications and treatment costs. Although government hospitals offer free treatment for snakebites in India, most patients opt for private healthcare, which is an out-of-pocket expense as they often lack health insurance coverage. This study aims to analyse snakebite treatment costs in private tertiary care hospitals in Tam

The Middle East and Northern Africa, collectively known as the MENA region, are inhabited by a plethora of venomous animals that cause up to 420,000 bites and stings each year. To understand the resultant health burden and the key variables affecting it, this review describes the epidemiology of snake, scorpion, and spider envenomings primarily based on heterogenous hospital data in the MENA region and the pathologies associated with their venoms. In addition, we discuss the venom composition and the key medically relevant toxins of these venomous animals, and, finally, the antivenoms that are

Snakebites are an important cause of death in rural and suburban India. Most of these deaths occur due to envenomation. The incidence of snake bite is highest in developing countries with the most common site of such bites in the lower limbs. Here, we present a case where a 12-year-old boy had been bitten on his face which is an unusual site and as a consequence the treating doctor failed to make the correct diagnosis promptly and the boy died.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the types of spiders causing bites and the clinical effects of their bites in tropical Northern Territory (north of the town of Katherine).
DESIGN: A prospective study of confirmed and suspected spider-bites and a retrospective analysis of data from a standardised, local database of spider- and snake-bites. Confirmed spider-bites were those in which there was a clear history of the bite, and the captured spider was identified by an arachnologist.
SETTING: Emergency department of a teaching hospital. SUBJECTS AND DATA SOURCE: All subjects with confirmed or suspected sp

The case is reported of a young girl who was bitten on the hand by a viper and developed compartment syndrome of the intrinsic muscles more than 24 h later. Multiple dorsal and volar fasciotomies resolved the acute episode with complete restitutio ad integrum. The clinical case is discussed in detail and the literature on these rare complications of snake bites in European countries reviewed.

Rapidly progressing descending areflexic quadriplegia with autonomic dysfunction in the form of hypertension, tachycardia, hypersalivation, sweating and lacrimation in the absence of proper history from attendants poses a challenge in emergency area. Neuroparalytic snake envenomation by elapid species has been known to produce autonomic symptoms and even locked-in states. Here we present a case of young male with rapidly progressing areflexic quadriplegia with autonomic dysfunction; with no documented history of snake bite who improved after antisnake venom and ventilatory support.

Military working dogs are often trained and/or work in locations where the potential for snake bites is increased. Knowledge of the local venomous snakes, the effects of their venom, and appropriate initial stabilization is essential for the US Army Veterinary Corps officer (VCO). As military practitioners, VCOs are uniquely situated to benefit from collaboration with other military assets for air evacuation and treatment of their patients. A recent clinical case of envenomation is presented, along with a review of the most current literature regarding treatment of envenomation in veterinary p…

The authors present a summary of the proceedings and the recommendations of the Fourth International Conference on Envenomations by Snakebites and Scorpion Stings in Africa, held from 25 to 29 April 2011 in Dakar. After a two-day workshop for Senegalese health personnel on the most relevant aspects of the management of envenomations, about 270 participants met to share their experiences in the field. Nearly a hundred oral and poster presentations were made on the epidemiology of snakebites and scorpion stings in Africa, the composition and action of venoms and the manufacture and use of antive

Black snakes (Pseudechis spp) are a genus of venomous Australian elapid snakes that can cause major clinical envenomation in companion animals, which may be fatal, even with appropriate antivenom treatment. Despite its clinical significance, there is little published information on the pathology of black snake envenomation. We report the gross and microscopic lesions associated with black snake envenomation in two dogs, one with a definitive immunological species identification of red-bellied black snake (RBBS; Pseudechis porphyriacus), the other with a black snake immunotype on a venom detect

Snakebite envenoming remains a major neglected tropical disease, causing substantial mortality and morbidity worldwide. While plasma-derived antivenoms have been the mainstay of treatment for over a century, they present important limitations related to safety, efficacy, specificity, scalability, and accessibility. Recent advances in biotechnology, venom and toxin characterization, and antibody engineering have enabled the development of new types of envenoming therapeutics, including recombinant antivenoms based on monoclonal antibodies and nanobody-based formats, as well as small-molecule in

Viperid snake venoms induce severe tissue damage, characterized by the direct toxic action of venom components, i.e., phospholipases A2 (PLA2s) and metalloproteinases (SVMPs), concomitantly with the onset of endogenous inflammatory processes, in an intricate scenario of tissue alterations. Understanding the expression of relevant genes in muscle tissue will provide valuable insights into the undergoing pathological and inflammatory processes. In this study, we have used the Nanostring technology to evaluate the patterns of gene expression in mouse skeletal muscle 1 h, 6 h, and 24 h after injec

In Colombia, Micrurus snakebites are classified as severe according to the national clinical care guidelines and must be treated with specific antivenoms. Unfortunately, these types of antivenoms are scarce in certain areas of the country and are currently reported as an unavailable vital medicine. To address this issue, La Universidad de Antioquia, through its spin-off Tech Life Saving, is leading a project to develop third-generation polyvalent freeze-dried antivenom. The goal is to ensure access to this therapy, especially in rural and dispersed areas. This project aims to evaluate the phys

Our study evaluates the risk factors of acute kidney injury (AKI) in children with snake envenomation. Out of 145 cases, 54 (37%) developed AKI. Unsurprisingly, the mortality increased with oliguria and higher levels of creatinine. Bleeding manifestations were also more common among the AKI group.
