BACKGROUND: Social communication skills are critical for full participation in social activities in primary life contexts for adolescents and young adults with neurodevelopmental disorders.
METHOD: Two young adults with Prader Willi syndrome participated in an online socialisation programme with elderly and adolescent conversational partners. We used a multiple baseline across conversational partners design for each participant to investigate the effects of textual prompts and constant time delay on the number of initiations and follow-up questions. We evaluated the social validity.

Shyness is a risk factor for, or an early manifestation of, more enduring problems with social anxiety. But the majority of shy children do not develop social phobia, and factors that further increase risk are poorly understood, underscoring the complexity of this relationship. Studies uniformly show that social phobia (particularly the generalized subtype) runs in families, and twin studies suggest that a moderate component of this familial tendency is genetic in origin. Understanding the genetic etiology of other neuropsychiatric disorders characterized by abnormal social interest, social co

Using data from a 1981 survey of 844 clients in seven selected programs of New York State's community support system, the authors assess the relationship of client age to a wide range of individual characteristics. They are particularly concerned with whether the young adult chronic patients in their study (those aged 18 to 34) share the same negative characteristics increasingly applied to young chronic patients in the literature, and whether these characteristics also apply to older patients. Their results indicate that while the 18- to 34-year-old patients in their study did exhibit many of

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent and heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition marked by atypical brain connectivity. Understanding ASD neural subtypes at the network level is critical for clarifying its neuroanatomical heterogeneity. Morphometric similarity networks (MSNs), derived from region-to-region similarity across multiple anatomical features, offer a powerful approach for capturing individual-level neural architecture. In this study, MSNs were estimated from seven anatomical features in 348 individuals with ASD and 452 typically developing (TD) controls. Across all ASD p

KIF1A-associated neurological disorder (KAND) is a genetic condition characterised by motor, cognitive and ophthalmologic features. The speech and language phenotype have not been systematically analysed. Here, we assess speech and language using observer- and clinician-reported outcomes, and performance outcome measures. 44 individuals (25 female) with KAND (median age 7 years, range 1-60 years) participated. Median age at diagnosis was 4 years (range 0.5-58 years). KIF1A variants were missense (41/44 individuals, 93%), intragenic deletion (2/44, 5%) and splice site (1/44, 2%). Age at first w

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Internet addiction (IA) and related behaviors, such as Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and social media addiction (SMA), have gained increasing research attention. Studies show gender differences, with males more likely to develop gaming-related addictions and females more prone to social media and phubbing behaviors. This study aimed to explore gender differences in Internet addiction and related behaviors in a Spanish sample, with the goal of identifying predictors and gender-specific patterns of IA.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study with 585 participants (

OBJECTIVES: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. Prior research suggests that genetic susceptibility and environmental exposures, such as maternal preeclampsia (PE) during pregnancy, play key roles in ASD pathogenesis. However, the specific effects of the interaction between genetic and environmental factors on ASD phenotype severity remain unclear. This study aims to investigate how interactions between de novo variants (DNVs) and common variants in individual genomes and PE exposure affect ASD symptom severity by constructing a gene-environment model.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic condition. While considerable work has focused on cognitive functioning, several research groups also observed difficulties in social functioning as a prominent feature of NF1. These problems and the possible link between NF1 and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have become increasingly important in recent NF1 literature. The aim of the current study was to assess ASD characteristics in a hospital-based NF1 pediatric population (n = 82) using the standardized Children Social Behavior Questionnaire (CSBQ) and Social Responsiveness Sc

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of anxiety and internalizing disorders in adolescence has increased epidemiologically over the past decade, compounded by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the expansion of digital social networks. Despite the availability of empirically based interventions, their systematic implementation in Spanish educational settings-especially in socioeconomically vulnerable environments-remains insufficient. This study aimed to assess the emotional symptomatology profile in a sample of adolescents enrolled in the 2nd year of Compulsory Secondary Education (CSE) and

OBJECTIVE: The authors determined the costs associated with generalized social anxiety disorder in a managed care setting.
METHOD: A three-phase mail and telephone survey was conducted from July to October 1998 in two outpatient clinics of a large health maintenance organization (HMO). The survey assessed direct costs, indirect costs, health-related quality of life, and clinical severity associated with generalized social anxiety disorder, both alone and with comorbid psychopathology.
RESULTS: The weighted prevalence rate of current generalized social anxiety disorder was 8.2%. In the past y

BACKGROUND: Many neurodevelopmental disorders are associated with significantly impaired communication that impacts the individuals and their families' daily activities. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of multiple scoring algorithms for the Observer-Reported Communication Ability (ORCA) measure in assessing communication abilities in individuals living with Angelman syndrome and other neurodevelopmental disorders with severe language impairments.
METHODS: This secondary data analysis used caregiver-reported data from the ORCA validation study (n = 249) and the Ang

BACKGROUND: Impairment in social functioning is a key component of personality disorder. Therefore psycho-education and problem solving (PEPS) therapy may benefit people with this disorder. Psycho-education aims to educate, build rapport, and motivate people for problem solving therapy. Problem solving therapy aims to help clients solve interpersonal problems positively and rationally, thereby improving social functioning and reducing distress. PEPS therapy has been evaluated with community adults with personality disorder in an exploratory trial. At the end of treatment, compared to a wait-li

The social world requires people to predict others' thoughts, feelings, and actions. People who successfully predict others' emotions experience significant social advantages. What makes a person good at predicting emotions? To predict others' future emotional states, a person must know how one emotion transitions to the next. People learn how emotions transition from at least two sources: (a) internal information, or one's own emotion experiences, and (b) external information, such as the social cues detected in a person's face. Across five studies collected between 2018 and 2020, we find evi

Mice and rats emit ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) above the human hearing range. Such USV are widely regarded as reliable indicators of the animal's affective state. Moreover, USV serve important communicative functions. Given their prominent role in social communication, this review adopts a reciprocal framework that considers both sender and receiver, with particular emphasis on both the production and perception of USV. The review focuses on sex differences and subtype variations in the sender, and explores the communicative value of USV through playback studies, revealing their role in reg

BACKGROUND: Potocki-Lupski syndrome (PTLS) and Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) are related genomic disorders, as duplication 17p11.2 (associated with PTLS) is the reciprocal recombination product of the SMS microdeletion. While SMS has a relatively well-delineated behavioural phenotype, the behavioural profile in PTLS is less well defined, despite purported associations with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the suggestion that some behaviours may be diametric to those seen in SMS.
METHODS: Caregivers of individuals with PTLS (N = 34; M age = 12.43, SD = 6.78) completed online behavioural quest

Autism and Williams syndrome are genetically based neurodevelopmental disorders that present strikingly different social phenotypes. Autism involves fundamental impairments in social reciprocity and communication, whereas people with Williams syndrome are highly sociable and engaging. This article reviews the behavioral and neuroimaging literature that has explored the neurocognitive mechanisms that underlie these contrasting social phenotypes, focusing on studies of face processing. The article concludes with a discussion of how the social phenotypes of both syndromes may be characterized by
