Dynamic processes in regulation and some implications for biofeedback and biobehavioral interventions.

Systems theory has long been used in psychology, biology, and sociology. This paper applies newer methods of control systems modeling for assessing system stability in health and disease. Control systems can be characterized as open or closed systems with feedback loops. Feedback produces oscillatory activity, and the complexity of naturally occurring oscillatory patterns reflects the multiplicity of feedback mechanisms, such that many mechanisms operate simultaneously to control the system. Unstable systems, often associated with poor health, are characterized by absence of oscillation, rando

Investigating relationships between loneliness, social isolation and health.

Loneliness and social isolation are important public health concerns due to their associations with a range of health outcomes. However, it is difficult to ascertain whether any effects are biased by confounding and reverse causation. We use a triangulation approach combining observational, sibling control, and Mendelian Randomisation analyses (a genetically informed analysis), to draw robust conclusions about these relationships. Using a combination of UK Biobank data (N = 8,004 to 414,432) and genome-wide association studies (N = 17,526 to 2,083,151), we examine relationships between lonelin

Temporo-parietal junction is involved in attribution of hostile intentionality in social interactions: an rTMS study.

The temporal-parietal junction (TPJ) is a brain area implicated in social cognition, attention, integrating body-related information and self-processing. We investigated involvement of both the left and the right TPJ in a complex social cognitive task that required attributing intentions to other people. Fourteen healthy subjects participated in experiments that involved simulating interactions with other people in everyday conflicting situations. The task was performed following application of inhibitory trains of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the right and the left T

Altered electrodermal response to facial expression after closed head injury.

UNLABELLED: The objective was to determine whether diffuse damage to orbital and ventromedial regions of the prefrontal cortex usually associated with moderate-to-severe closed head injury (CHI) would affect the ability to perceive and respond to socially relevant information. METHODS: Participants with CHI and age-matched non-injured controls were presented with faces that varied with respect to emotional expression while electrodermal activity (EDA) was monitored. Cognitive and general adaptive functioning was also assessed. RESULTS: CHI was associated with a failure to increase EDA in res

The Use of Social Media in Health Interventions for People Living with Cancer: A Systematic Review.

Social media offers scalable opportunities for social connection and health communication; however, its role in cancer interventions remains unclear. This systematic review examines the use of social media in cancer-related health interventions and their targeted outcomes. The review was registered with PROSPERO and conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. Seven databases were searched for English-language randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (2000-2024) evaluating cancer interventions with a social media component. Eligible studies involved adults (≥18 years) with a cancer diagnosis and r

Individual differences in social network size linked to nucleus accumbens and hippocampal volumes in functional neurological disorder: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In the biopsychosocial formulation of functional neurological (conversion) disorder (FND), little is known about relationships between social behavior and brain anatomy. We hypothesized that social behavior would relate to brain areas implicated in affiliative behaviors and that social network size would correlate with symptom severity and predisposing vulnerabilities in FND. METHODS: This neuroimaging pilot probed how social network size, as measured by the Social Network Index, related to structural brain profiles in 23 patients with motor FND (15 woman and 8 men). The Role of Social Media in Knowledge, Perceptions, and Self-Reported Adherence Toward COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, social media has served as a channel of communication, a venue for entertainment, and a mechanism for information dissemination. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the associations between social media use patterns; demographics; and knowledge, perceptions, and self-reported adherence toward COVID-19 prevention guidelines, due to growing and evolving social media use. METHODS: Quota-sampled data were collected through a web-based survey of US adults through the Qualtrics platform, from March 15, 2022, to March 23, 2022, to assess covariates (eg

Characteristics of geriatric patients related to early and late readmissions to hospital.

The aim of the study was to evaluate which characteristics of geriatric patients account for readmission to hospital, 6 months after discharge. All patients (203 females, 176 males) consecutively admitted over a two-month period to four acute geriatric care units, located in the cities of Chieti, Perugia, Pescara and Prato, participated in the study. Data that could potentially explain early and late readmissions were collected for each patient. Prevalence of diseases and comorbidity were assessed with the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (CIRS); physical function by self-report (ADL, IADL) and

Health, social and economic consequences of hypersomnia: a controlled national study from a national registry evaluating the societal effect on patients and their partners.

Hypersomnia causes significant socioeconomic burden, but there is insufficient information about the time course and the effect on the partner. The aim of this study was to estimate the factual direct and productivity costs of hypersomnia in a controlled study including all national patients and their partners. Using records from the Danish National Patient Registry (1997-2009), we identified all patients with a diagnosis of hypersomnia and compared these patients and their partners with randomly chosen controls matched for age, gender, geographic area and marital status. Direct and productivi

Towards a social harm approach in drug policy.

In this paper, we explore how the social harm approach can be adapted within drug policy scholarship. Since the mid-2000s, a group of critical criminologists have moved beyond the concept of crime and criminology, towards the study of social harm. This turn proceeds decades of research that highlights the inequities within the criminal legal system, the formation of laws that protect the privileged and punish the disadvantaged, and the systemic challenge of the effectiveness of retribution and punishment at addressing harm in the community. The purpose of this paper is to first identify parall

Vagal flexibility: A physiological predictor of social sensitivity.

This research explores vagal flexibility--dynamic modulation of cardiac vagal control--as an individual-level physiological index of social sensitivity. In 4 studies, we test the hypothesis that individuals with greater cardiac vagal flexibility, operationalized as higher cardiac vagal tone at rest and greater cardiac vagal withdrawal (indexed by a decrease in respiratory sinus arrhythmia) during cognitive or attentional demand, perceive social-emotional information more accurately and show greater sensitivity to their social context. Study 1 sets the foundation for this investigation by estab

Correlates of recovery of social functioning in types I and II bipolar disorder patients.

Since bipolar disorder (BPD) patients are often functionally impaired, and factors associated with recovery from disability are largely unknown, we investigated demographic, clinical, and neurocognitive correlates of current social functional recovery in 65 stable participants diagnosed with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) type I (n=42) or II (n=23) BPD. Regaining highest previous levels of social functioning was rated with the Interpersonal Relationships Questionnaire. We also considered neuropsychological test findings as well as demographic and clinical inform

Speech and language therapy/pathology: perspectives on a gendered profession.

BACKGROUND: The speech and language therapy/pathology (SLT/SLP) profession is characterized by extreme 'occupational sex segregation', a term used to refer to persistently male- or female-dominated professions. Men make up only 2.5% of all SLTs in the UK, and a similar imbalance is found in other countries. Despite calls to increase diversity in the allied health professions more generally, research into the reasons for occupational sex segregation and gender as a potential key factor remains scarce. AIMS: This study aims to explore the potential role of gender/gendered discourses in people's

Personality and psychopathology in children with and without loss of control over eating.

BACKGROUND: In children with loss of control (LOC) over eating, recent research has revealed evidence for distinct personality features, such as more impulsivity. The aim of this study was to assess parent- and child-report personality profiles in children with and without LOC over eating and to relate these profiles to general and eating-disorder psychopathology. METHOD: A total of 120 children (60 with LOC over eating; 68 girls) aged 8 to 13 years were recruited from the community. Clinical interview, self-report, and parent-report questionnaires were administered to assess personality as w

Obstetricians' attitudes, subjective norms, perceived controls, and intentions on antibiotic prophylaxis in caesarean section.

Over 10% of current births in all countries of the world are delivered by caesarean section. Single-dose ampicillin or cefazolin administered after cord clamping has been proven to be effective for the prevention of post-caesarean infections as indicated in many randomised trials and reviews in the Cochrane Library. This study aimed to determine three determinants of behavioural intention using the theory of planned behaviour: attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived controls. Intentions were examined for five aspects of the use of antibiotic prophylaxis, namely whether or not antibiotics we

Legal implications of sterilization of the mentally retarded.

For more than 50 years, sterilization of mentally retarded persons was an accepted practice in many states as a way to reduce the number of persons born with mental defects. In recent years, the practice has come under heavy challenge, both medically and legally. At present, only 19 states have statutes that allow sterilizations for eugenic reasons. This article examines important court decisions regarding eugenic sterilization laws and the legal status of sterilization of mentally retarded adults and minors, as well as the consequent legal implications for physicians. A pilot study on the pattern of COVID-19 information sources and its associated factors among the public in Qatar: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: During the coronavirus pandemic, many people looked for information on COVID-19 through social, official, and traditional media sources. This caustic situation resulted in panic among the public, leading to many false news, conspiracy theories, and magical cures being spread among the public at an alarming rate. Controversial theories about the validity of vaccination and non-adoption of disease control resulted in a slow disease control rate and adverse impacts on global health and the economy. Recent studies have shown that health information could safely guard mental health duri

An mHealth App-Based Social Capital Intervention (PrEP US NoW) to Improve Sexual Health and Uptake of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Young, Black, Sexual Minority Men: Protocol for Intervention Development and a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Black Americans are disproportionately impacted by HIV. This disparity is more profound in the Southern United States, with the highest rates being among young, Black, sexual minority men, who are also less likely to receive state-of-the-art interventions such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Individual-level interventions to increase PrEP uptake do not often capitalize on the opportunity to leverage the significant effects of this group's social networks, including Black women, on attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors around HIV prevention. OBJECTIVE: To increase PrEP use, an inte

Updating the emotional content of working memory in social anxiety.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive accounts suggest that information processing biases have an important role in the etiology and maintenance of social anxiety (SA). Empirical evidence support this notion has been established in variety of cognitive domains. Yet, it is still not known how social anxious individuals process emotional content in working memory (WM). Maladaptive WM updating may influence emotion regulation and anxiety during social situations in SA. Thus, the aim of the present study was to explore biases when updating emotional content in SA. METHODS: 31 participants with hig
