Since 1978, 300 children with Down's syndrome have received plastic- and aesthetic-surgical corrections of the face--to the tongue, nose, and less frequently, ears and chin--so that they will be less conspicuous. The parents' satisfaction in 95% of the cases indicates that the children's situation has been improved by the operations. The children are less stigmatized and their social integration became easier.

Behavioral scientists have long been struck by the human tendency to connect with other individuals and groups. Three major approaches to group connection have been advanced: (a) the social cohesion approach, (b) the social identity approach, and (c) identity fusion theory. While each approach has garnered support, no one has attempted to integrate them. We address the need for integration by proposing a general theoretical framework that specifies the unique contributions of each approach, identifies the psychological phenomena each best explains, and reconciles theoretical inconsistencies. Rates of clinical anxiety have increased during COVID and post-quarantine in youth, with older adolescent girls and youth with minorized racial, gender, and sexuality identities most vulnerable. Given that increased anxiety to a threatening/uncertain environment is adaptive, it is important to conceptualize anxiety from a balanced perspective, evaluating its functionality. For adolescents continuing to struggle with re-integration into their social environments and school avoidance, an exposure framework is necessary to encourage approach behaviors to recalibrate the social environment as safe

The present paper examines the role of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD). A cognitive-behavioral model of SAD is first presented. Different modalities of CBT for SAD are then described, including exposure, cognitive restructuring, relaxation training, and social skills training, and evidence supporting their efficacy is reviewed. The comparative and combined impact of CBT and pharmacotherapeutic interventions is also explored. CBT appears to be an efficacious treatment for SAD. However, the overall efficacy CBT may be increased by closer exami

BACKGROUND: In Italy, approximately 50% of women report experiencing episodes of psychological and/or physical violence. The Emergency Department (ED) is widely recognized as one of the health services to which victims of violence seek treatment for injuries and within which situations of domestic violence and abuse can be recognized. This work aims to estimate the phenomenon of violence in the population of the Health Protection Agency (ATS) of Milan using data from emergency room access and hospital admissions. A further goal of the survey is to provide evidence to launch audit processes in

BACKGROUND: This study investigated relationships between low-income adolescent drinkers' frequent alcohol use and five factors: social disorganization, social structural, social integration, mental health, and access to healthcare.
OBJECTIVE: A sample of 1,256 low-income adolescent drinkers and caregivers were extracted from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study.
RESULTS: Logistic regression yielded results showing adolescent drinkers' weekly drinking to be associated positively with Hispanic adolescents, drinking peers, adolescents' depression/anxiety, and caregiver's daily drin…

Although prior research links parental incarceration to deleterious outcomes for children over the life-course, few studies have examined whether such incarceration affects the social exclusion of children during adolescence. Drawing on several lines of scholarship, we examine whether adolescents with incarcerated parents have fewer or lower quality relationships, participate in more antisocial peer networks, and feel less integrated or engaged in school. The study applies propensity score matching to survey and network data from a national sample of youth. Analyses indicated that children wit

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often undermines community re-integration, impairs functioning and produces other symptoms. This study tested an innovative programme for veterans with TBI, the Veterans' In-home Programme (VIP), delivered in veterans' homes, involving a family member and targeting the environment (social and physical) to promote community re-integration, mitigate difficulty with the most troubling TBI symptoms and facilitate daily functioning.
SETTING: Interviews and intervention sessions were conducted in homes or by telephone.
PARTICIPANTS: Eighty-one veterans with

Employment is a right of citizenship and a social determinant of health, but employment rates remain low for persons with disabilities. The purpose of this paper is to examine the principles and practices guiding work integration within the fields of intellectual disability (ID), brain injury, and mental illness and to identify best practices to support transitions to employment across these three groups. This integrative review drew upon an occupational perspective to analyze the current literature. Findings reveal that the need and benefits of working are recognized across disability groups

The ongoing overdose crisis has created a widespread but understudied population of bereaved individuals at elevated risk for adverse mental health outcomes. This study examines cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal factors associated with symptom severity of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among 115 adults who lost a loved one to drug overdose. Participants completed an online survey assessing continuing bonds, centrality of the death event, integration of the loss, unfinished busin

Infertility significantly impacts people worldwide, with many pursuing medical treatments including Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). This scoping review explores the role of allied health professionals (AHPs) in fertility care and their integration into fertility care teams. A search of six databases yielded 12 studies identifying dietitians, nutritionists, counsellors, psychologists, social workers, and physical therapists (physiotherapists) as key AHPs in fertility care. The role of AHPs was broadly divided into two main areas: providing education and monitoring related to lifestyle

Loneliness is a growing concern among aging migrant populations, with significant implications for their well-being and social integration. This study examines how first-generation Turkish labor migrants in Germany engage with third places such as parks, religious sites, neighborhood centers, and cafés, and how these everyday settings shape their experiences of social connection and loneliness in later life. Drawing on mobile ethnography and go-along interviews with 27 older adults in the Nuremberg metropolitan region in Germany, the study explores how third places are used, adapted, or withdr…

BACKGROUND: Cancer prognosis and survival are determined not only by biological and clinical factors, but also by patients' social environments. Social vulnerability, including socioeconomic deprivation, limited education, weak social networks, and social exclusion, can critically influence diagnosis, treatment adherence, and outcomes. This scoping review aims to synthesize the current evidence on the impact of social vulnerability and exclusion on cancer outcomes, comprising prognosis, survival, quality of life, and related psychosocial factors.

BACKGROUND: Most choices in healthcare are not made in social isolation. However, current econometric models treat patients' preferences as the sole determinants of their choices. Through the lens of sociology and medical sociology theories, this paper presents a systematic literature review of identifiable social influences on patients' choices, serving as a first step in developing a social-interdependent choice paradigm.
METHODS: Following the PRISMA guideline and using nine databases, we identified the individual agents or groups involved in health-related choices, the functional content

Social deficits are a hallmark of schizophrenia, often characterized by impairments in processing and integrating socially transmitted information. However, translational models that accurately capture these deficits remain scarce. The Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1 gene (DISC1), a key susceptibility factor implicated in the etiology of psychiatric disorders, has been shown to cause DISC1 protein aggregation and dysfunctional signaling when modestly overexpressed, ultimately resulting in aberrant dopamine homeostasis. In this study, we employed a transgenic rat model overexpressing human DISC1 (

Digital isolation represents a contemporary paradox in which increased connectivity through social media and digital technologies does not necessarily translate into improved social integration or psychological well-being. This review synthesizes current evidence on the relationship between digital environments and mental health, with a focus on mechanisms underlying loneliness, anxiety, depression, and related outcomes. The findings indicate that problematic and passive use of social media-particularly when associated with social comparison processes and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO)-is consiste…

Resting-state network topology may provide a powerful framework for understanding how large-scale brain organisation supports cognitive functions. However, the topological correlates of social cognition remain poorly characterised. This study examined whether individual differences in social cognition are associated with the global topology of the resting-state functional connectome derived from high-density EEG across canonical frequency bands. Twenty-eight healthy young adults underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, including measures of global cognition, theory of mind, emp

Exposure to environmental regularities allows individuals to build internal models, supporting the integration of prior expectations with sensory input in social contexts. However, how social prediction models develop across age and experience remains unclear. To address this, we investigated whether the formation of social predictive models varies across age and experiences in neurotypical individuals (early adolescents, young adults, and adults). Participants completed, in counterbalanced order, two scenarios of an immersive virtual reality (IVR) task that facilitates the creation of top-dow

The structure of social networks fundamentally influences spreading dynamics. In general, the more contact between individuals, the more opportunity there is for the transmission of information or disease to take place. Yet, contact between individuals, and any resulting transmission events, are determined by a combination of spatial (where individuals choose to move) and social rules (who they choose to interact with or learn from). Here, we examine the effect of the social-spatial interface on spreading dynamics using a simulation model. We quantify the relative effects of different movement

INTRODUCTION: Technological improvements alone have not led to the integration of genomic medicine across a broad range of diseases and populations. For genomic medicine to be successfully implemented across specialties and conditions, the challenges patients and caregivers experience need to be identified using a multi-faceted understanding of the context in which these obstacles occur and how they are experienced. Individuals affected by rare conditions, like Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), express numerous challenges with accessing genomic medicine.
