Hikikomori: psychopathology and differential diagnosis of a condition with epidemic diffusion.

OBJECTIVE: Hikikomori, from the Japanese words 'hiku' (to pull) and 'komoru' (to withdraw), is a clinical condition in which a subject locks himself/herself into his/her own house for more than 6 months. This condition is becoming relevant in Japan and other Asian countries, with new cases emerging in Europe and a steep increase in its incidence. METHODS: In this article, the various psychopathological and diagnostic hypothesis and the different criteria proposed by the various authors have been analysed and compared, paying attention also to the new studies conducted in Europe and to therape

Toward a Developmental Timing Framework for Autism: Linking Hemispheric Asymmetry, Motor Organization, and Motor-Social Coupling.

Early behavioral features associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are frequently examined within separate motor, sensory, and social … rge on developmental timing processes expressed through neural communication, motor regulation, and social interaction. Rather than proposing a deterministic causal sequence, the present account examines how variation in motor-social interaction may influence opportunities for social learning through recurrent cycles of action, perception, prediction, and caregiver …

Infants' Social Evaluation of Helpers and Hinderers: A Large-Scale, Multi-Lab, Coordinated Replication Study.

Evaluating whether someone's behavior is praiseworthy or blameworthy is a fundamental human trait. A seminal study by Hamlin and colleagues in 2007 suggested that the ability to form social evaluations based on third-party interactions emerges within the first year of life: infants preferred a character who helped, over hindered, another who tried but failed to climb a hill. This sparked a new line of inquiry into the origins of social evaluations; however, replication attempts have yielded mixed results. We present a preregistered, multi-laboratory, standardized study aimed at replicating inf

What does social cognition look like in everyday social functioning in Huntington's disease? A protocol for a scoping review to explore and synthesise knowledge about social cognition alongside day-to-day social functioning of people with Huntington's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Social cognition is problematic in Huntington's disease (HD). Despite the observations of clinicians and families, there is minimal empirical literature about how it presents in daily life and the impact on social functioning. This protocol forms the basis of a scoping review to synthesise both the quantitative knowledge and qualitative experiences of the HD community so that a visual and narrative map can address what is known and what is not known for the benefit of the community and clinicians and academics alike. METHODS AND ANALYSES: An umbrella scoping review of previous w

A Paradigm for Understanding Adolescent Social Anxiety with Unfamiliar Peers: Conceptual Foundations and Directions for Future Research.

Adolescents who experience social anxiety concerns often display symptoms and impairments when interacting with unfamiliar peers. For adolescent clients, reducing symptoms and impairments within these interactions comprises a key treatment target within exposure-based therapies for social anxiety. Recent work on mechanisms of change in exposure-based therapies highlights the need for therapeutic exposures to simulate real-world manifestations of anxiety-provoking social situations. Yet, researchers encounter difficulty with gathering ecologically valid data about social interactions with unfam…

Asymmetric reverse buffering patterns of source-specific social support in the associations between depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation among college students.

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal ideation remains a major mental health concern among college students. This study examined whether perceived social support from family, friends, and significant others differentially moderates the associations of depressive and anxiety symptoms with suicidal ideation, with particular attention to a potential asymmetric buffering pattern. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 504 college students using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and Self-Rati

The effects of companionship from strangers and companions on pain thresholds in immersive virtual reality: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Virtual reality (VR) has been used to treat pain for decades, but improvements in the cost and accessibility of consumer devices open up new opportunities for increasing its efficacy; for example, by adding a social element to virtual experiences. Previous research on the effects of social interaction on pain thresholds in induced pain tasks indicates that even social interaction with a stranger has the potential to increase the effectiveness of VR for pain. In addition, interacting with friends or family members through media can offer social support, and conducting these interacti…

Parental overprotection and interpersonal behavior in generalized social phobia.

Forty-one people with generalized social phobia (GSP) and 42 community controls completed a measure of social developmental experiences and then participated in a social interaction with an experimental assistant whose behavior was either friendly or ambiguous. Following the interaction, confederates rated participants' behavior and their desire to interact with their partner again. In people with social phobia, but not controls, perceptions of parental overprotection were associated with less responsiveness to partner behavior. Moreover, failure to reciprocate the friendly partner's behavior …

Effects of atypical antipsychotic agents on social behavior in rodents.

There are numerous preclinical screening procedures that are predictive of clinical efficacy for the positive symptoms of schizophrenia but no assays for the negative symptoms such as social withdrawal. In the social interaction test in rats, the atypical antipsychotic drug clozapine (10.0 mg/kg) and two putative atypical agents risperidone (0.0625 mg/kg) and HP 873 (0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg) significantly increased social interaction behaviors between pairs of unfamiliar but not familiar rats. The benzodiazepine diazepam (1.25-5.0 mg/kg) increased social behaviors in both paradigms. Haloperidol, chl…

A test of anxiety that distinguishes between the actions of benzodiazepines and those of other minor tranquilisers and of stimulants.

The effects of minor tranquilisers and of stimulant drugs were studied in the Social Interaction test of anxiety in which the illuminance and unfamiliarity of the test arena are manipulated. Acute administration of sodium phenobarbitone (25 mg/kg) was without effect. Acute administration of sodium phenobarbitone (35 mg/kg) and of meprobamate (60 mg/kg) produced sedation: both locomotor activity and social interaction were reduced. On the other hand, amphetamine sulphate (2 mg/kg) and caffeine citrate (20 mg/kg) reduced social interaction, but increased locomotor activity. Chronic administratio…

From interaction to identification: a mixed methods study on the formation mechanism of group identity among Ultimate Frisbee club members.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle sports like Ultimate Frisbee have emerged as important settings for social connection amid urban social atomization. Nevertheless, the voluntary and non-contractual nature of these clubs means they continue to face persistent challenges in sustaining membership. Although prior research has explored group identity in various sporting contexts, the mechanisms through which ritualized interaction and social exchange jointly contribute to members' identification remain insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the formation mechanism of group identity amo

A meta-analytic review of gaze cueing across the autism trait continuum.

Social attention is fundamental to social interaction and is experimentally indexed by the gaze-cueing effect (GCE) derived from the gaze-cueing task. Although atypical social attention is often considered a core feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), empirical findings regarding the GCE in ASD remain heterogeneous. This inconsistency highlights the need to investigate social attention across the broader autism trait continuum (autism-like traits [ALT]) in the general population to clarify these mechanisms. This meta-analysis synthesized 28 correlational studies (77 effect sizes) and eight…

Liking gap(s) in getting-acquainted interactions.

In first interactions, people often think about how much they like the other and how much the other likes them in return. Recently, a liking gap has been identified, which is the tendency for people to underestimate how much a new acquaintance likes them. With data from a compiled sample of pairs of strangers interacting for the first time, this investigation contributes to knowledge on how common it is to experience this perceived liking gap (versus no gap or an overestimation of how much one is liked). Also examined is an actual liking gap, the difference between how much people think they a

Examining associations, moderators and mediators between childhood maltreatment, social functioning, and social cognition in psychotic disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been related to social functioning and social cognition impairment in people with psychotic disorders (PD); however, evidence across different CM subtypes and social domains remains less clear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify associations between CM, overall and its different subtypes (physical/emotional/sexual abuse, physical/emotional neglect), and domains of social functioning and social cognition in adults with PD. We also examined moderators and mediators of these associations. A PRISMA-compliant systematic search was performe

Perspectives of older adults with a chronic condition on functioning, social participation and health: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Problems with mobility, functioning and social participation make living independently difficult for frail older adults. To continue living independently, therapy adherence is a prerequisite. The causes for non-adherence among older adults are multiple and complex, which is why insight into older adults' perspectives regarding their functioning is an essential factor to increase therapy adherence. This study investigates the perspectives of older adults on their functioning, social participation and health, and the factors influencing these elements. METHODS: We conducted a qualit
