Clinical features and co-morbidity of social phobics in Turkey.

The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical features and frequency and importance of related co-morbid disorders of social phobia in a clinical sample. Eighty-seven patients meeting DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria for social phobia were studied. All patients were assessed by using a semi-structured socio-demographic form, the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R, Manual for the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders, Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression and Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety. Sixty-eight (78.2%) of the gro

Who Is Suffering from the "Corona Blues"? An Analysis of the Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Depression and Its Implications for Health Policy.

COVID-19 is tremendously affecting not only social structures but also people's psychological states. In particular, COVID-19 is negatively affecting psychological health, in particular, the depression. When individuals are experiencing the depression, there is increase in the suicide rate and occurrence of serious social problems. This study therefore examines factors affecting depression by using hypothesis testing. Previous studies have limitations in that they focus only on demographic variables or other specific variables. In contrast, this study focuses on the influences of four non-pand…

Social cognition in schizophrenia: similarities and differences of emotional perception from patients with focal frontal lesions.

The structural and functional abnormalities of the frontal lobes, the region implicated in social information processing, have been suspected to underlie social cognitive impairments in schizophrenia. However, multiple structures, including the limbic/paralimbic areas that are also important for social cognition, have been reported to be abnormal in schizophrenia. The aim of this study is to investigate the extent to which the frontal lobe dysfunction accounts for social cognitive impairments in schizophrenia by comparing with patients who have focal frontal lobe injuries. Social cognitive abi

Mild to severe social fears: ranking types of feared social situations using item response theory.

Social anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental disorders, and is associated with long term impairment, distress and vulnerability to secondary disorders. Certain types of social fears are more common than others, with public speaking fears typically the most prevalent in epidemiological surveys. The distinction between performance- and interaction-based fears has been the focus of long-standing debate in the literature, with evidence performance-based fears may reflect more mild presentations of social anxiety. This study aims to explicitly test whether different types of social fear

[Anorexia and bulimia: the canton of Vaud's experience of an interdisciplinary approach].

As psychiatric disorders attacking the body, anorexia and bulimia may have severe psychological, physical and social consequences, often requiring a long-standing interdisciplinary, coordinated and individualized approach. Recently the canton of Vaud has initiated and developed an interinstitutional structure--between the University Hospital (CHUV) and the hospitals of the Northern region of the canton (eHnv)--for the care of patients suffering from eating disorders. This structure, allowing the above mentioned approach for the treatment of eating disorders, consists of an outpatient facility

Associations between social networks, cognitive function, and quality of life among older adults in long-term care.

BACKGROUND: Having rich social networks is associated with better physical and cognitive health, however older adults entering long-term care may experience an increased risk of social isolation and consequent negative impacts on cognitive function. Our study aimed to identify if there is an association between accessing specific types of services or activities within long-term care on social networks and cognition. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 96 residents from 2 aged care providers in New South Wales, Australia. Residents were given a battery of assessments measuring social network s

Ontogeny of rake mark scarring on common dolphins (Delphinus delphis): insights to aggression and affiliation?

Aggressive and affiliative interactions shape resource allocation, social structure and reproduction in social species. In delphinids, rake marks (parallel scars from tooth raking) indicate social interactions. When examined alongside ontogeny, demographic traits and scar position, rake marks can inform social dynamics. We assessed rake marks on common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in Aotearoa New Zealand (2006-2024; n = 102) during post-mortem examinations to explore drivers of social behaviour. Using a zero-inflated generalized linear mixed model, we assessed rake mark occurrence (probability…

Where and with whom? The role of leisure activities in shaping momentary affective states in later life.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the momentary associations between intellectual, physical, and social activities and high- and low-arousal positive and negative affect (HPA, LPA, HNA, and LNA), and how social and physical contexts moderate these associations. METHODS: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) was conducted over 7 consecutive days, with 153 middle-aged and older adults completing 6,102 surveys in China. Two-level linear mixed-effects models with a CAR(1) correlation structure were used for the analyses. RESULTS: Associations between physical activity and affective states varied a

Conversational linguistic features inform social-relational inference.

Whether it is the first day of school or a new job, individuals often find themselves in situations where they must learn the structure of existing social relationships. However, the mechanisms through which individuals evaluate the strength and nature of these existing relationships - social-relational inference - remain unclear. We posit that linguistic features of conversations may help individuals evaluate social relationships and may be associated with social-relational inference. Leveraging a naturalistic behavioral experiment (57 adults; 34,735 observations), participants watched a mid-

PV and SST neurons in the anterior cingulate cortex regulate social disorders in adulthood induced by sensory abnormalities in childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood sensory abnormalities experience has a crucial influence on the structure and function of the adult brain. The underlying mechanism of neurological function induced by childhood sensory abnormalities experience is still unclear. Our study was to investigate whether the GABAergic neurons in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) regulate social disorders caused by childhood sensory abnormalities experience. METHODS: We used two mouse models, complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) injection mice and bilateral whisker trimming (BWT) mice in childhood. We applied immunofluorescence, c

Social support network factors associated with verbal fluency among vulnerable persons living with HIV.

Vulnerable persons living with HIV (PLWH) are at high risk of cognitive impairment and challenges accessing quality social support in later life. Impaired verbal fluency (VF), a cognitive domain linked to HIV, could impede social support associated with health and well-being for already vulnerable PLWH. We examined the structure of social support, using latent class analysis, and the associations among quantity, specific forms and quality of social support and VF among PLWH. Participants enrolled in the BEACON study (n = 383) completed the Controlled Oral Word Association test (COWAT) and a so

Social Determinants of Health and Early Brain Development.

In this article, we review recent research linking prenatal Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) to fetal and neonatal brain development, highlighting their deleterious impact on neurodevelopmental outcomes and the need for early interventions. We summarize (1) the role of social risk factors in prenatal SDoH related to very preterm birth, (2) links between prenatal SDoH risk factors and neonatal brain structure and function, and (3) the multiple mechanisms postulated to underlie these links. Finally, we discuss promising randomized control trials that directly modify SDoH risk factors and mak

How Social Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and Intimate Partner Violence Affect Homelessness Among Women in Two Rural Regions With Resource-Based Economies in Eastern Quebec.

This study presents findings from a qualitative study conducted in two relatively remote, primarily rural regions of the Canadian province o … nced by the participants in this study. Our analysis of these responses illustrates the patriarchal social structure of power in these regions, which is perpetuated in the interpersonal, institutional, and representational dimensions and keeps women in precarious, subordinate social positions, while ostracizing or punishing women who try to resist.

Beyond biomedical control: governance, social protection, and system gaps in tuberculosis control in Kazakhstan - a qualitative study of decision-makers.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge globally and in Kazakhstan, despite progress in reducing incidence. Increasing evidence highlights the role of social and structural determinants in shaping TB risk, disease progression, and treatment outcomes. However, limited research has explored how decision-makers conceptualize these factors and identify system-level gaps in TB control. This study aimed to examine regional decision-makers' perspectives on TB burden, social protection, health system capacity, and governance in Kazakhstan. METHODS: A qualitative study wa

Investigating the role of interpersonal relationships on low-income SUD patients' recovery: a qualitative analysis of various stakeholders in New York State.

BACKGROUND: While positive impacts of recovery capital and social capital in facilitating substance use disorder (SUD) recovery is increasingly documented, research has shown that low-income and marginalized individuals have lower social capital and may rely on different networks. A more comprehensive approach is needed to understand the social capital of low-income individuals with SUD and how these relationships impact their treatment and recovery. METHODS: Qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed employing thematic analysis. Participants included indiv

Loneliness as a Mediator in the Association Between Social Isolation and Psychological Distress: A Cross-Sectional Study With Older Korean Immigrants in the United States.

The present study explored the role of loneliness in the association between social isolation and psychological distress, using a cross-sectional sample of older Korean immigrants in the U.S. Considering structural (unmarried and living alone) and relational (isolation from family and friends) social isolation, we hypothesized that (1) both types of social isolation would be associated with loneliness and psychological distress and (2) their effect on psychological distress would be mediated through loneliness. Data came from the Study of Older Korean Americans (SOKA), a multisite survey of Ko

Autism Pathogenesis: The Superior Colliculus.

After been exposed to the visual input, in the first year of life, the brain experiences subtle but massive changes apparently crucial for communicative/emotional and social human development. Its lack could be the explanation of the very high prevalence of autism in children with total congenital blindness. The present theory postulates that the superior colliculus is the key structure for such changes for several reasons: it dominates visual behavior during the first months of life; it is ready at birth for complex visual tasks; it has a significant influence on several hemispheric regions;

A longitudinal, qualitative analysis of the context of substance use and sexual behavior among 18- to 29-year-old men after their release from prison.

Substance use, sexual behavior, and reincarceration among 89 men from 5 state prisons across the USA, aged 18-29 years, were examined in relation to individual patterns of coping with community reintegration after their release from prison. Analyses of a series of qualitative interviews conducted over a 6-month period post-release revealed three global reintegration coping patterns: moving toward successful reintegration, resuming behavioral patterns that preceded incarceration, and reintegrating through withdrawal or isolation. Four key contextual factors that differentiated these three copin

Social cognitive bias increases loneliness both directly and by decreasing social connection in patients with schizophrenia.

While considerable emphasis has been put on investigating the mechanisms that drive reduced social connection in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ), recent studies have increasingly focused on the issue of loneliness in SCZ. As both social cognitive bias and self-reported empathy predict loneliness in non-clinical populations, the current study aims to examine the relationship between loneliness, reduced social connection and social cognitive biases, and self-reported empathy in SCZ. Ninety-three adult SCZ and sixty-six matched healthy individuals completed a battery of questionnaires measuring

A Social Network Theory-Based Investigation into the Characteristics of MSM in Virtual Communities.

Social networks significantly influence MSM's HIV prevention behaviors, with virtual communities serving as key interaction platforms. Using a Python web crawler, we analyzed 960 user profiles from Baidu Tieba's "Gay Bar" forum. The social network within this community exhibits a core-periphery structure, where a densely connected core facilitates effective information dissemination, while the majority of users reside in peripheral positions with limited and isolated connections. Relationships within the network are primarily formed based on shared interests rather than geographical proximity,
