Graft pseudoaneurysm simulating desmoid tumor recurrence.

A desmoid tumor is a rare neoplasm of soft tissues and, although benign, is locally invasive and tends to recur. We report a case of suspected recurrence of a supraclavicular desmoid tumor that had been resected 2 years earlier. Computed tomography suggested the correct diagnosis of a pseudoaneurysm of a venous graft that had been placed during the resection.

Dynamic Computed Tomography for detecting pulmonary cysts in canine Paragonimiasis: a case report.

An 11-year-old male French bulldog presented with incidental cystic lesions by the pulmonary CT. CT revealed two cysts in the right caudal lobe of the lung that were suspicious for emphysematous lesions. These cysts were divided into an air layer and a soft tissue-like layer. Dynamic computed tomography (DCT) of cysts revealed undulating motion in the soft tissue-like layer. The dog's rearing environment included brackish water, and it was evident that the dog had been eating brackish water crabs from the river. The dog was diagnosed with paragonimiasis. This DCT imaging revealed movement of l

[Imaging methods in traumatology of the shoulder- and elbow joint].

Radiological diagnostics (diagnostic imaging) of the traumatised shoulder and elbow joint has expanded considerably and has become increasingly meaningful in recent years. The introduction of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging has enabled a significantly better assessment of soft parts and of the inner spatial structure of the joints. Hence, focus of diagnosis has now shifted from the assessment of the bones (which was previously the main aspect of diagnosis) to a different analysis of the joint as a functional unit of bone and soft part structures, an analysis that can also de

Development of a patient-specific cone-beam computed tomography dose optimization model using machine learning in image-guided radiation therapy.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is commonly utilized in radiation therapy to visualize soft tissues and bone structures. This study aims to develop a machine learning model that predicts optimal, patient-specific CBCT doses that minimize radiation exposure while maintaining soft tissue image quality in prostate radiation therapy. Phantom studies evaluated the relationship between dose and two image quality metrics: image standard deviation (SD) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). In a prostate-simulating phantom, CNR did not significantly decrease at doses above 40% compared to the 100% do

In vivo biocompatibility of elderberry-enriched carboxymethyl chitosan in soft tissue and calvaria bone defects.

BACKGROUND: Regeneration of soft and hard tissues remains a major challenge in periodontal and craniofacial applications, necessitating the development of multifunctional and biocompatible scaffolds. This study investigates the in vivo biocompatibility and regenerative potential of elderberry-enriched, polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDE)-crosslinked carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCht-E) in a rat model. METHODS: Twenty-six eight-week-old female Wistar rats were randomly assigned to three experimental groups (subcutaneous, intramuscular, and calvarial; n = 7 per group). In each rat, symmetri

Role of bone single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography in managing chronic fracture-related infections: Determining the depth of infection and avoiding unnecessary bone procedures.

PURPOSE: Fracture-related infections (FRIs) encompass a broad range of infections associated with bone fractures; they remain a significant clinical challenge. Here, we aimed to investigate the viability of focusing on soft-tissue management in patients suspected of chronic FRI, who exhibit no significant bony uptake on bone single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/computed tomography (CT) scans. METHODS: Between January 2016 and January 2022, we managed 25 patients with chronic FRI or post-traumatic osteomyelitis using technetium 99m-methyl diphosphonate bone SPECT/CT to assess inf

Integrating cross-modality hallucinated MRI with CT to aid mediastinal lung tumor segmentation.

Lung tumors, especially those located close to or surrounded by soft tissues like the mediastinum, are difficult to segment due to the low soft tissue contrast on computed tomography images. Magnetic resonance images contain superior soft-tissue contrast information that can be leveraged if both modalities were available for training. Therefore, we developed a cross-modality educed learning approach where MR information that is educed from CT is used to hallucinate MRI and improve CT segmentation. Our approach, called cross-modality educed deep learning segmentation (CMEDL) combines CT and pse

Airway geometry and wall mechanical properties estimated from subglottal input impedance in humans.

We measured input impedance between 16 and 2,048 Hz in intubated subjects at functional residual capacity. The corresponding subglottal impedances (ZSG) were then computed using a model where the endotracheal tube was represented by a distributed-parameter two-port network. ZSG was well described by a model based on Horsfield's asymmetric airway geometry at total lung capacity (TLC) with nonrigid walls. The walls of the cartilaginous airways included separate cartilage and soft tissue compartments, whereas the noncartilaginous airway walls had only a soft tissue compartment. Both compartments

Castleman disease mimicking an aggressive retroperitoneal neoplasm.

A case of Castleman disease of the retroperitoneum in a 26-year-old woman is presented. Sonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a large retroperitoneal mass with somewhat heterogeneous imaging characteristics. Although a definitive preoperative diagnosis was not possible, magnetic resonance imaging was useful in delineating the extent of the tumor and defining the characteristics of surrounding soft tissues.

A computational intelligence approach for classifying dental caries in X-ray images using integrated fuzzy C-means clustering with feature reduction and a weighted matrix scheme.

Classifying dental caries in X-ray images poses several challenges that must be addressed to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning. However, dental X-rays often have low contrast, making it difficult to distinguish between healthy and decayed regions, especially in the early stages of caries. This paper uses computational intelligence to present a new approach to classifying dental caries in X-ray images. The traditional Fuzzy C-means (FCM) segmentation algorithms have limitations, such as treating all feature components equally important. This can lead to misclassificatio

Aggregation of Fuzzy Nutrient-Level Evaluations Using a Parametric T-Norm: Mathematical Properties, Calibration, and a Proof-of-Concept Analysis.

Backgroumd/Objectives: Since 1995, the intake of individual nutrients has been evaluated using fuzzy logic, with aggregation of the resulting fuzzy sets enabling the weighing of one nutrient against another, and the evaluation and optimization of overall nutrient intake. The aggregation operator used in earlier work, defined as the product of the minimum and harmonic mean operators (MIN×H), performed well in practice but had undesirable mathematical properties: it is not associative, model extensions can shift results even when all conditions are fully satisfied, and the resulting evaluation f

Rough cubic intuitionistic fuzzy soft relation framework for risk identification and hospital selection in breast cancer treatment.

Conventional fuzzy or rough set models struggle to capture the ambiguity, hesitancy, and partial information that are frequently present in healthcare decision-making. To address this challenge, we propose a novel rough cubic intuitionistic fuzzy soft relational framework that combines interval-valued membership, intuitionistic non-membership, and soft binary relations within a harmonious rough set paradigm. The model captures multi-dimensional uncertainty by representing membership, non-membership, hesitation, and boundary approximations simultaneously. To this end, we use soft binary relatio

High-throughput analysis of multimodal monitoring data: the role of machine learning in early warning systems for high-risk neonates.

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) generates vast amounts of high-throughput, multimodal monitoring data, offering unprecedented potential for identifying early signs of clinical deterioration in high-risk neonates. However, the traditional threshold-based alarm systems are plagued by high false alarm rates and alarm fatigue, failing to harness this data complexity. This narrative review examines the role of machine learning (ML) in transforming early warning systems (EWSs) by effectively analysing these complex data streams. We first characterise the diverse sources-including physiologic

Machine learning prediction for epilepsy treatment selection and prognosis: achievements and challenges.

Accurate prediction of treatment response and selection of optimal treatments remain challenging in epilepsy management. With no reliable surrogate biomarkers for treatment response, the current process of selecting an antiseizure medication remains largely a trial-and-error approach. Other non-pharmacological treatment options, such as epilepsy surgery, are viable alternatives for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. Statistical and machine learning techniques have been used to predict seizure outcomes associated with antiseizure medications and epilepsy surgery. Recent breakthroughs in dee

Progress in Machine Learning-Assisted Biosensors for Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, affecting 55 million people worldwide. Its characteristics include the accumulation of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. This disease is associated with changes in the concentration of AD biomarkers, such as microRNAs, amyloid peptides, Tau protein, and neurofilament light chains. Due to the fact that neuropathological processes begin decades before the onset of cognitive symptoms, accurate detection of AD biomarkers is crucial for its early diagnosis. The combination of analytical techniques and machine learning methods
