A Eu(III)-MOF for ratiometric fluorescence detection of ATP with a smartphone-integrated sensing platform.

BACKGROUND: Sensitive and selective detection of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is essential for applications in biological analysis, clinical diagnostics, and food safety. Although luminescent probes offer high sensitivity, many systems suffer from poor stability and limited field applicability. Eu(III)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising due to their sharp emissions and long lifetimes; however, developing structurally robust platforms with reliable on-site sensing capability remains a significant challenge. In particular, achieving high selectivity toward ATP in complex matrice

Stereospecific recognition of S-fluoxetine enabled by HOF-101-based multimodal probe.

BACKGROUND: Given the distinct pharmacological activities and toxicological profiles of fluoxetine enantiomers, highly selective analytical tools are essential to ensure medication safety and advance the accuracy of chiral recognition. The hydrogen-bonded organic framework HOF-101 possesses well defined porous channels, abundant directional hydrogen-bonding sites, and intrinsic fluorescence, and can achieve chiral recognition through differential cavity confinement and stereospecific hydrogen-bonding interactions. Based on this, we have developed a multimodal chiral fluorescent probe based on

A benzothiazole-based fluorescent probe for rapid spectroscopic detection of cysteine and bioimaging in cells and zebrafish.

Cysteine (Cys) is an important low-molecular-weight biothiol whose abnormal fluctuation is closely related to redox imbalance and several disease-associated processes. Herein, we report an acrylate-functionalized benzothiazole fluorescent probe, HBT-D, for selective Cys detection and biological imaging. HBT-D showed weak fluorescence in the free state because the acrylate unit blocked the ESIPT process of the benzothiazole fluorophore. After reaction with Cys, cleavage of the acrylate moiety restored the ESIPT pathway, giving a clear turn-on emission at around 450 nm together with a visible co

Multiresponsive solvatochromic fluorophores as viscosity and polarity sensors in solid and liquid state: Lipid droplet sensing in live cell imaging.

Maintaining a healthy cellular microenvironment, characterized by optimal polarity, viscosity, pH, and temperature, is critical for normal physiological function. Disruptions in these parameters are often associated with disease onset, oxidative stress, as well as metabolic disorders. Fluorescent molecular probes capable of simultaneously monitoring multiple environmental factors offer powerful tools for understanding cellular dynamics. In this context, the design of multiresponsive solvatochromic probes is particularly attractive for real-time, non-invasive tracking of microenvironmental chan

High-sensitivity detection of alpha-fetoprotein via an unlabelled fluorescent probe based on switchable AIEE effect of a phenolic compound.

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a crucial cancer biomarker for the early screening and diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma. Here, we report the discovery of a phenolic compound, 5,5'- (anthracene- 9,10-diyl)bis(benzene-1,3-diol) (ABOL), exhibiting typical aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) effect. ABOL can bind to the nucleobases of the AFP-specific aptamer (AFP-Apt) through hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and hydrophobic interactions, forming an ABOL/AFP-Apt complex. After complexation, the free rotation of ABOL's three aromatic rings is hindered, inducing the AIEE effect and subseq

One-pot pyrene-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 enables pH-Gated speciation of serum copper: Exchangeable versus total copper.

Metal ion dysregulation, particularly involving copper, has been implicated in neuropsychiatric disorders including depression. Herein, we report a pyrene-functionalized UiO-66 platform (UiO-66-NH-PCA) prepared by a facile one-pot solvothermal strategy that avoids complicated pyrene-ligand presynthesis and tedious post-synthetic modification. Spectroscopic analyses supported amidation-consistent chemical anchoring of the pyrene unit onto UiO-66-NH2, affording a fluorescent MOF that retained its framework integrity under acidic conditions. UiO-66-NH-PCA acted as a turn-off fluorescence probe fo

One-step construction of a thiolysis-driven chemodosimeter for robust colorimetric and turn-on fluorometric hydrogen sulfide detection integrated with a smartphone platform for environmental monitoring.

Herein, a novel dinitrophenyl-appended phthalonitrile chemodosimeter DNPPn, readily synthesized in a single step, was introduced as a colorimetric and fluorescent probe for the selective and sensitive detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and validated in real sample matrices. The molecular structure of the DNPPn was comprehensively elucidated using single-crystal X - ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and well-established spectroscopic techniques (1H NMR, 13C NMR, ESI-MS, and FT-IR). DNPPn exhibited a broad concentration range, and dual-mode (colorimetric and turn-on fluorometric) sensing capabil

Single-probe Pd-modified ZnO-polymer fluorescent sensor array for discrimination of thymidine analogues in aqueous media.

Thymidine analogues are widely used as antiviral and anticancer agents; however, improper dosage and prolonged exposure can lead to severe hematological and genetic complications, necessitating reliable methods for their detection and discrimination. We report an array-based fluorescence sensing platform for the discrimination of structurally related thymidine analogues in aqueous media using a Pd-modified ZnO-polymer nanocomposite as a single cross-reactive probe. The nanocomposite was synthesized by functionalizing ZnO nanoparticles with a KG3 polymer matrix followed by palladium ion modific

Smartphone-assisted visual detection of arsenate based on Cu2+-functionalized Zr-MOF fluorescent nanozyme.

A ratiometric fluorescence platform for sensing arsenate with high-performance has been developed with Cu2+-functionalized Zr metal organic framework (Cu@Zr-MOF) fluorescent nanozyme. The doping of Cu2+ provides the catalytic active site to decompose O2 into •OH and 1O2, which oxidizes non-fluorescent substrate o-phenylenediamine (OPD) into product (oxOPD) with yellow fluorescence. When As(V) is present, the intrinsic blue fluorescence of Zr-MOF enhances remarkably by weakening the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) accompanied by the fluorescence decrease of oxOPD owing to inner filter ef

A novel Zn(II) probe for dual-mode discernment of malonate/pyrophosphate/oxalate and programmable bioimaging in HeLa cells.

The study successfully synthesized a novel dual-mode probe, Zn(NBD-BPHA)I2, capable of both fluorescent and photothermal detection. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that Zn(NBD-BPHA)I2 adopts a distorted square pyramidal geometry. The probe exhibits highly selective turn-on fluorescence responses toward malonate, pyrophosphate, and oxalate, with detection limits as low as 6.98 nM, 7.93 nM, and 9.04 nM, respectively. Notably, the binding affinity for the three analytes follows a concentration-dependent trend. Furthermore, photothermal detection revealed significant differences

A xanthene-based red-emitting fluorescent probe for the detection and monitoring of carbon monoxide in bacterial pneumonia models and in plant samples.

Carbon monoxide (CO) functions as a critical signaling molecule in both mammalian inflammation and plant stress responses. However, existing techniques face challenges in real-time monitoring of CO dynamics across biological kingdoms. Here we developed Z2CO, a xanthene-based red-emitting fluorescent probe constructed on a Pd(0)-triggered Tsuji-Trost allylic cleavage mechanism. Upon CO recognition, Z2CO generates a distinct turn-on fluorescence signal at 625 nm within 10 min. The probe exhibits favorable properties including an 80 nm Stokes shift, low detection limit (0.193 μM, 3σ/k criterion),

Post-synthetic modification strategy for constructing dual-emission fluorescent sensor toward visual detection and quantification of 3-nitrotyrosine biomarker.

BACKGROUND: As the biomarker of oxidative stress (OS), 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) levels in serum is closely associated with disease progression, and the development of rapid and reliable fluorescent sensor is therefor urgent. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive for their diversified, easily designed and functionalized structures, yet most MOF-based 3-NT fluorescent sensors are single-signal depended, resulting in inadequate anti-interference capability and insufficient reliability. Developing MOF-based dual-emission fluorescent sensors for precise detection of serum 3-NT levels thus re

Intermolecular Structure Conversion-Based G4-TDF Nanostructures Functionalized μPADs for Fluorescent Determination of Potassium Ion in Serum.

Herein, we proposed a versatile G-quadruplex (G4)-tetrahedral DNA framework (G4-TDF) nanostructure functionalized origami microfluidic paper-based device (μPADs) for fluorescence detection of K+ by lighting up thioflavin T (ThT). In this work, TDF provided robust structural support for G-rich sequence in well-defined orientation and spacing to ensure high recognition efficiency, enabling sensitive fluorescence sensing on origami μPAD. After introducing ThT, the G-rich sequences extended from TDF vertices formed a parallel G4 structure, showing weak fluorescence signal output. Upon the presence

pH-Responsive Fluorescence Turn-On Copper(II)-Probe for Nitric Oxide Detection: A Reductive Nitrosylation Approach.

Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the crucial biological signaling molecules, yet achieving its selective and spatiotemporal detection in in-situ/invitro or biological systems at specific pH remains a significant challenge. Hence, a probe capable of directly detecting NO would be immensely valuable in understanding its reactivity and biological functions. Here, to develop a Cu(II)-based probe for selective NO detection, we synthesized a Cu(II)-complex (1) using a N3-tridentate ligand having a pendant dansyl fluorophore (L1) and evaluated it's NO reactivity under varying pH conditions. The binding of

"Signal-Switching" Fluorescence Sensing of Fe3+ and Ascorbic Acid by Songaria Cynomorium Polysaccharide-Doped Carbon Dots of the Tibetan Medicinal Herb.

The Songaria Cynomorium polysaccharide-doped carbon dots (SP-CDs) were synthesized by carbonization-heating method. Songaria Cynomorium polysaccharide (PS) was the carbon source. Ethylenediamine (EDA), phosphoric acid (H3PO4), and concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) were dopants, respectively. The SP-CDs exhibited the maximum fluorescence emission wavelength of 540 nm under the excitation wavelength of 485 nm ("ON" state). After the introduction of Fe3+ with an intermediate bridging effect, the fluorescence intensity of SP-CDs was quenched due to the formation of the complex (SP-CDs/Fe3+) bet

Fluorescent EGTA-derived carbon dots for turn on-off-on detection of Fe3+ and ascorbic acid via hydrothermal synthesis and cellular imaging.

We present a novel, one-step hydrothermal synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) with intense blue fluorescence and a remarkably high quantum yield of 50%, using ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA) as a single precursor eliminating the need for additional passivation agents. This streamlined strategy represents a significant advancement in the efficient production of functional CDs. The resulting CDs exhibit dual-mode fluorescence sensing, selectively detecting Fe3+ through a fluorescence quenching mechanism, with an ultra-low detection limit of 23 nM. Notably, the quenched fluorescence is fully r

Construction of dual-rotor-BODIPY-based fluorescent probes with improved sensitivity and brightness for lipid-droplet viscosity imaging.

Lipid droplets (LDs) function as crucial organelles for intracellular lipid storage and their viscous vibrations are closely associated to metabolic disorders. However, existing fluorescent probes for viscosity are mainly constrained by relatively low sensitivity/brightness or weak lipid-droplet specificity. In this work, based on the one-rotor probe Bz-BDP with a meso-benzene, dual-rotor probes BT-BDP and BI-BDP utilized a benzothiazole or benzimidazole and a meso-benzene as two cooperative rotors. Remarkably, BT-BDP demonstrated superior fluorescence enhancements at 571 nm (946 folds) in gly
