[Identification of a novel TBR1 gene variant in a Chinese pedigree affected with intellectual developmental disorder with autism and speech delay].

OBJECTIVE: To describe a family with intellectual developmental disorder with autism and speech delay (IDDAS) caused by a splice variant of TBR1 gene. METHODS: A pregnant women with mental retardation, who also had a family history of mental retardation, was admitted to Prenatal Diagnosis Center of WanBei Coal and Electricity Group General Hospital Corporation in April 2019. Molecular genetic tests were performed on the pregnant women and ten other family members to analyze the pathogenic genotype. Functional assays of the pathogenic variant was carried out by minigene technology. With the de

Pathological attenuation of the right prefrontal cortex activity predicts speech and limb motor timing disorder in Parkinson's disease.

Neurological deficits can cause a wide range of motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, our understanding about the effects of PD on the underlying neural mechanisms of motor function has remained elusive. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between PD pathology and neurological deficits in planning and execution mechanisms of motor timing during speech production and limb movement. We used a combination of behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) measures to characterize motor timing deficits in patients with PD compared with a neurologically

Parent couples' participation in speech-language therapy for school-age children with autism spectrum disorder in the United States.

This study examined parent couples' participation in and satisfaction with speech-language therapy for school-age children with autism spectrum disorder in the United States. Responses from 40 father-mother couples (n = 80 parents) were examined across therapy components (i.e. parent-therapist communication, assessment, planning, and intervention). Descriptive frequencies, chi-square tests, intraclass correlations, and dyadic multilevel modeling were used to examine participation across fathers and mothers and within parent couples. Compared to mothers, fathers communicated less with therapist

Motor speech impairment predicts expressive language in minimally verbal, but not low verbal, individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Developmental motor speech impairment has been suspected, but rarely systematically examined, in low- and minimally verbal individuals with autism spectrum disorder. We aimed to investigate the extent of motor speech impairment in this population and its relation to number of different words produced during a semi-structured language sample. METHODS: Videos of 54 low-verbal and minimally verbal individuals (ages 4;4-18;10) performing portions of a speech praxis test were coded for signs of motor speech impairment (e.g., childhood apraxia of speech). Age, autism spectrum d

Effects of a Variably Occluded Face Mask on the Aerodynamic and Acoustic Characteristics of Connected Speech in Patients With and Without Voice Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study reports on experiments designed to examine the effects of a variably occluded face mask (VOFM) on (a) estimated subglottal pressure (Psub) in normophonic participants and (b) aerodynamic and acoustic characteristics of voice in dysphonic participants. DESIGN: A prospective design was used for experiment 1, and a prospective, randomized cohort design was used for experiment 2. METHODS: The outlet ports of disposable anesthesia face masks were fitted with plastic caps with variable diameter drilled openings (9.6, 6.4, 3.2, and 1.6 mm) to create a series of mask openings.

White Matter Integrity and Treatment-Based Change in Speech Performance in Minimally Verbal Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

We investigated the relationship between imaging variables for two language/speech-motor tracts and speech fluency variables in 10 minimally verbal (MV) children with autism. Specifically, we tested whether measures of white matter integrity-fractional anisotropy (FA) of the arcuate fasciculus (AF) and frontal aslant tract (FAT)-were related to change in percent syllable-initial consonants correct, percent items responded to, and percent syllable insertion errors (from best baseline to post 25 treatment sessions). Twenty-three MV children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) received Auditory-M

What do speech-language pathologists think parents expect when treating their children with autism spectrum disorder?

PURPOSE: Despite the importance of Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) collaborating with parents in the treatment of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), few studies have examined the nature of this working relationship and how best to facilitate collaboration. To explore what SLPs think parents of children with ASD expect of them when it comes to the delivery of evidence-based interventions. METHOD: The participants were 22 SLPs from Australia who specialised in ASD and who each participated in a semi-structured interview. Recordings were transcribed and analysed according to the p

Training a new generation of speech-language pathologists with competences in the management of literacy disorders and learning disabilities in Hong Kong.

One of the recent developments in the education of speech-language pathology is to include literacy disorders and learning disabilities as key training components in the training curriculum. Disorders in reading and writing are interwoven with disorders in speaking and listening, which should be managed holistically, particularly in children and adolescents. With extensive training in clinical linguistics, language disorders, and other theoretical knowledge and clinical skills, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are the best equipped and most competent professionals to screen, identify, diagn

Measuring word complexity in speech screening: single-word sampling to identify phonological delay/disorder in preschool children.

BACKGROUND: Children's speech sound development is assessed by comparing speech production with the typical development of speech sounds based on a child's age and developmental profile. One widely used method of sampling is to elicit a single-word sample along with connected speech. Words produced spontaneously rather than imitated may give a more accurate indication of a child's speech development. A published word complexity measure can be used to score later-developing speech sounds and more complex word patterns. There is a need for a screening word list that is quick to administer and re

Acoustic and perceptual correlates of stress in nonwords produced by children with suspected developmental apraxia of speech and children with phonological disorder.

Previous research (L. Shriberg, D. Aram, & J. Kwiatkowski, 1997b, 1997c) has suggested that accuracy in producing linguistic stress reliably distinguishes between children with suspected developmental apraxia of speech (sDAS) and children with phonological disorder (PD). The current investigation tested this hypothesis by examining acoustic correlates of stress in trochaic (strong-weak) and iambic (weak-strong) nonwords produced by 5 children in each of these 2 groups. Four measures relating to stress production were examined: vowel duration, fundamental frequency (f0) at vowel midpoint, timin

Singing in groups for Parkinson's disease (SING-PD): a pilot study of group singing therapy for PD-related voice/speech disorders.

Parkinson's disease related speech and voice impairment have significant impact on quality of life measures. LSVT(®)LOUD voice and speech therapy (Lee Silverman Voice Therapy) has demonstrated scientific efficacy and clinical effectiveness, but musically based voice and speech therapy has been underexplored as a potentially useful method of rehabilitation. We undertook a pilot, open-label study of a group-based singing intervention, consisting of twelve 90-min weekly sessions led by a voice and speech therapist/singing instructor. The primary outcome measure of vocal loudness as measured by so

Facilitating Transition from High School and Special Education to Adult Life: Focus on Youth with Learning Disorders, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Speech/Language Impairments.

Youth with learning disorders, speech/language disorders, and/or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder may experience significant struggles during the transition from high school to postsecondary education and employment. These disorders often occur in combination or concurrently with behavioral and emotional difficulties. Incomplete evaluation may not fully identify the factors underlying academic and personal challenges. This article reviews these disorders, the role of special education law for transitional age youth in public schools, and the Americans with Disabilities Act in postsecon

Neural substrates of speech disorders in Parkinson's disease: A narrative review of the evidence from task-based and resting-state fMRI studies.

Speech disorders are highly prevalent among patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Although insights into the neural substrates of these disorders have been achieved since the introduction of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the evidence has never been analyzed altogether. This review aims to summarize and discuss the findings from the two most common approaches of fMRI: task-based and resting-state. We grouped the evidence into four statements: (i) speech disorders in patients with PD are linked with functional changes in the speech production network (SPN), (ii) PD alters the S…

Mechanisms of Swallowing, Speech and Voice Disorders in Parkinson's Disease: Literature Review with Our First Evidence for the Periperal Nervous System Involvement.

The majority of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) develop swallowing, speech, and voice (SSV) disorders. Importantly, swallowing difficulty or dysphagia and related aspiration are life-threatening conditions for PD patients. Although PD treatments have significant therapeutic effects on limb motor function, their effects on SSV disorders are less impressive. A large gap in our knowledge is that the mechanisms of SSV disorders in PD are poorly understood. PD was long considered to be a central nervous system disorder caused by the death of dopaminergic neurons in the basal ganglia. Aggrega
