Apraxia of speech (AOS) is a motor speech disorder characterized by slow speaking rate, abnormal prosody and distorted sound substitutions, additions, repetitions and prolongations, sometimes accompanied by groping, and trial and error articulatory movements. Although AOS is frequently subsumed under the heading of aphasia, and indeed most often co-occurs with aphasia, it can be the predominant or even the sole manifestation of a degenerative neurological disease. In this study we determine whether the clinical classifications of aphasia and AOS correlated with pathological diagnoses and speci

PURPOSE: Two studies examined speech skill learning in persons with apraxia of speech (AOS). Motor-learning research shows that delaying or reducing the frequency of feedback promotes retention and transfer of skills. By contrast, immediate or frequent feedback promotes temporary performance enhancement but interferes with retention and transfer. These principles were tested in the context of a common treatment for AOS.
METHOD: Two studies (N = 4, N = 2) employed single-subject treatment designs to examine acquisition and retention of speech skills in adults with AOS under different feedback

PURPOSE: Exclusive right hemisphere language lateralization is rarely observed in the Wada angiography results of epilepsy surgery patients. Cortical stimulation mapping (CSM) is infrequently performed in such patients, as most undergo nondominant left hemisphere resections, which are presumed not to pose any risk to language. Early language reorganization is typically assumed in such individuals, taking left hemisphere epileptiform activity as confirmation of change resulting from a pathologic process. We present data from CSM and Wada studies demonstrating that right hemisphere language occu

BACKGROUND: Assessment and treatment practices for hypokinetic dysarthria in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) remain largely inaccessible and understudied in African and Arabic countries.
AIMS: This study investigates clinical practices of Algerian speech-language therapists (SLTs) in assessing and treating dysarthria in PwPD.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey of Algerian SLTs was conducted between December 2024 and January 2025. Thirty-six SLTs completed the proposed questionnaire (88.8% women; mean age 32.7 ± 8.9 years). Data on demographics, assessment tools, treatment method

Post-termination relationships are complex because the client may need additional services and it may be difficult to determine when the speech-language pathologist-client relationship is truly terminated. In my contribution to this scientific forum, discharge experiences from speech-language pathologists working in Cyprus and Greece will be explored in search of commonalities and differences in the way in which pathologists end therapy from different cultural perspectives. Within this context the personal impact on speech-language pathologists of the discharge process will be highlighted. Inh

Research on the neural imprint of dual-language experience, crucial for understanding how the brain processes dominant and non-dominant languages, remains inconclusive. Conflicting evidence suggests either similarity or distinction in neural processing, with implications for bilingual patients with brain tumors. Preserving dual-language functions after surgery requires considering pre-diagnosis neuroplastic changes. Here, we combine univariate and multivariate fMRI methodologies to test a group of healthy Spanish-Basque bilinguals and a group of bilingual patients with gliomas affecting the la

BACKGROUND: Makaton, an unaided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) method, is widely used by speech-language therapists (SLTs) in diverse clinical and educational settings. Despite its applicability across populations with complex communication needs, limited research has explored how South African SLTs perceive, use and experience Makaton. This gap is significant given South Africa's multilingual context, resource disparities and the need for culturally relevant AAC strategies.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore South African SLTs' perceived competencies and use of Makaton

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the speech and language outcomes of children with cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP+/-L) in the USA to children with CP+/-L in Brazil who underwent intervention with enhanced Milieu teaching with phonological emphasis (EMT + PE), as there are few cross-country intervention comparisons for children with CP+/-L.
METHOD: This is a retrospective analysis of 29 participants from the USA and 24 participants from Brazil who were matched on age. The US participants were between the ages of 13-35 months (M = 23.76), spoke Standard American Eng

Developing an undergraduate clinical training module in Early Communication Intervention (ECI) that provides sufficient opportunity for students' learning experiences, and that allows contextually relevant and ethically accountable services to clients, as well as the dissemination of the latest scientific findings to both students and clients, poses a significant challenge. The article describes the development of a clinical training block and the development of an appropriate instrument for the assessment of neonatal communication skills that was used in this student practical. Cerebellar pathology engenders the disturbance of movement that characterizes Friedreich ataxia (FRDA), yet the impact of cerebellar pathology on cognition in FRDA remains unclear. Numerous studies have unequivocally demonstrated the role of the cerebellar pathology in disturbed cognitive, language and affective regulation, referred to as Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome (CCAS), and quantified by the CCAS-Scale (CCAS-S). The presence of dysarthria in many individuals with ataxia, particularly FRDA, may confound results on some items of the CCAS-S resulting in false-positive scores. This

I have introduced primary progressive aphasia (PPA) with regard to frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and evaluated the following elementary language symptoms for its diagnosis: agrammatism in speech production, apraxia of speech, phonemic paraphasia, naming impairment, impairment of single-word comprehension, and repetition. Furthermore, I have described the clinical symptoms, causative lesions, and pathological findings of three PPA variants -nonfluent/agrammatic, semantic, and logopenic PPA- according to the criteria proposed by Gorno-Tempni et al. (2011).

Infants' first attempts to communicate with their environment begin shortly after birth. However, real words appear by age of 12-15 months. Any delay in expressing their needs verbally beyond this age is defined as speech delay and may be associated with a variety of pathological conditions. The aim of this study is to investigate the incidence of hearing impairment in those children presented with speech delay. Ninety-one speech-delayed children were audiologically assessed between March 1993 and March 1995. In 25 out of 91 children (27.4%) a moderate to severe hearing loss was detected, eith

Project INTERprofessional Autism Collaborative Training (INTERACT) is an interprofessional education program designed to prepare graduate students in psychology, special education, and speech-language pathology to work with autistic children with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. The rising prevalence of autism, coupled with increased appreciation for interprofessional approaches to service delivery, indicates the need for university training programs to prepare graduate students to work interprofessionally with this population; yet descriptions of such programs and their effective…

The present study aimed to examine the attitudes of a group of South African speech-language pathologists towards stuttering and stuttering therapy. Further aims were to investigate whether a stereotype of stutterers was found among these speech-language pathologists, and to determine whether there was any relationship between the attitudes held about stutterers, and the therapists' training and experience. A random probability sample of respondents was selected from the population of speech therapists registered with the Interim Medical and Dental Council of South Africa (I.M.D.C.S.A.). A sel
