Kaposi's sarcoma and disseminated sporotrichosis of the skin and joints developed simultaneously in a homosexual man with antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus. There was no identified source of exposure to Sporothrix organisms. Sporotrichosis may be a presenting opportunistic infection associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and tends to be disseminated at the time of diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Sporotrichosis is a granulomatous infection caused by Sporothrix species, typically following traumatic inoculation. Brazil is an endemic area, and zoonotic transmission from cats has become the predominant route of infection. Nail bed involvement is extremely uncommon, likely due to the protective barrier of the nail plate.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 51-year-old female, who cared for domestic and stray cats, with cutaneous and arthropathic psoriasis under treatment with methotrexate and adalimumab, who developed a painful, ulcerated lesion on the nail bed and folds of the r…

Sporotrichosis is a type of zoonotic subcutaneous mycosis caused by different species of dimorphic fungus of the genus Sporothrix, and it is the most common form of subcutaneous mycosis in Latin America. Sporotrichosis is generally restricted to cutaneous and lymphatic tissue (i.e., localized forms), and involvement in the viscera (i.e., disseminated or disseminated cutaneous form) is uncommon, especially in the central nervous system. However, immunosuppression in individuals with diabetes mellitus can lead to the disseminated form of the disease due to a failure to eliminate the pathogen and…

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by Sporothrix complex, endemic in Abancay, Peru. Is acquired by traumatic inoculation with plant material. Common clinical presentations are lymphatic cutaneous and fixed cutaneous disease. We report 2 cases of fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis with granulomatous appearance. The first case was a patient of 65 years old with no risk factors and the second case was a 67 year old diabetic patient. Subjects underwent mycological culture with Sabouraud agar, with isolation of Sporothrix schenckii and clinical dignosis of fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis wi…

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycotic infection, caused by the dimorphic fungi Sporothrix schenckii. Ocular sporotrichosis has both intraocular and adnexal forms. We describe two cases of sporotrichosis involving the conjunctiva of two healthy individuals after inoculation by their pet cats, with complete resolution of lesions after antifungal treatment.

Sporotrichosis is a cosmopolitan, chronic granulomatous mycosis, acquired by traumatic inoculation and caused by Sporothrix schenckii complex. Several methods of diagnostic are available, from KOH to molecular biology. In this review, we describe from the simplest (clinical diagnosis) to the most advanced diagnostic techniques (molecular biology).

Two cases of sporothricosis originating from the same geographical area (Province of Barcelona) are described, including the circumstances of infection and the isolation of a wild strain of Sporothrix schenckii at the same locality. This finding could classify this particular area as a zone of interest in the epidemiological and ecological study of the mediterranean sporothricosis.

Sporotrichosis oculoglandular syndrome is an infectious disease caused by the thermodimorphic fungus Sporothrix species. Humans can become accidentally infected through vegetative trauma and contact with cats. However, there are no reported cases of this disease being transmitted by insects. In this report, we present a case of insect-related sporotrichosis oculoglandular syndrome.

Sporothrix schenckii, the causative agent of sporotrichosis, is a relatively rare infection. Local infection usually occurs through direct inoculation of the organism through the skin; disseminated disease is rarely seen. This article describes a case of disseminated sporotrichosis in a middle-aged man without the commonly seen risk factors for dissemination.

Although sporotrichosis is not an AIDS-defining infection, reports of sporotrichosis in individuals infected with HIV are increasing. We report an unusual case of this co-infection in a man with progressive deep cutaneous ulcerations with numerous pleomorphic yeast cells of Sporothrix schenckii. In addition a review of the literature on this subject was carried out and commented upon.

Sporotrichosis is a fungal infection caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii. Although this fungal microorganism is labeled a true pathogen, its virulence is less than that of other fungal pathogens, such as Coccidioides immitis, Histoplasma capsulatum, and Blastomyces dermatitidis. This article discusses its clinical manifestations, experimental models, diagnosis, and therapy.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is commonly encountered due to traumatic implantation of thorns or decayed vegetation with the dimorphic fungi, Sporothrix schenckii. Zoonotic spread of Sporotrichosis is rare and we describe here the first case of feline transmission of lymphocutaneous sporotrichiosis encountered in India.
METHODS: An excision biopsy of nodulo-ulcerative lesion from the patients right elbow and forearm were collected for histopathology and portion of the specimen processed for mycological work up. Animal pathogenicity test performed in Swiss albino mice with intraperitoneal & foot …

Although first reported more than a century ago, sporotrichosis, caused by Sporothrix schenckii, still remains a poorly studied disease. Results from recently published studies on sporotrichosis in endemic areas are summarised and assembled with previous findings, providing a comprehensive review that highlights the needs for further research.

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous fungal infection caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii. Itraconazole has largely replaced older therapies, but we present a case of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis that failed to respond to an adequate course of itraconazole yet responded dramatically to treatment with saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI).

A 7-year-old boy presented with an annular verrucous plaque on the chin of 5 weeks duration. The lesion occurred after a bicycle accident and was unresponsive to antibiotics. Fungal culture grew Sporothrix schenckii. Sporotrichosis should be considered and fungal culture obtained whenever a nodule or plaque fails to respond to initial treatment.

Two cases of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis are reported from Sudan in a boy aged four and a half years and a girl aged 16 years respectively. Diagnosis was based mainly on the clinical findings and the dramatic response to treatment with oral potassium iodine, as well as the histological finding of yeasts compatible with the yeast phase Sporothrix schenkii.

A severe necrotizing granulomatous lymphadenitis caused by Sporothrix schenckii was diagnosed in a Pacific white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens) that had been in captivity for about 3 years. Histopathologic and electron microscopic studies, as well as fluorescent antibody techniques, were used to identify S schenckii as the etiologic agent.
