"It's never just one thing": understanding risk factors for sports injuries in track and field.

BACKGROUND: Track and field athletes are vulnerable to injury due to numerous intrinsic and extrinsic factors, such as previous injuries, high training loads, inadequate recovery, and psychological stress. However, there is limited information about the lived experiences of athletes from low- and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore perceptions of risk factors for sports injuries among Sri Lankan track and field athletes and key stakeholders. METHODS: This qualitative study employed convenience sampling to recruit elite athletes, their parents, and diverse stakeholde

Barriers and Facilitators of Cancer Screening Uptake in Meghalaya and Mizoram States under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of NCDs in India: A Mixed-methods Study.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer is a leading cause of both morbidity and mortality in India. In response, the government launched a national screening programme under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases (NPCDCS/NP-NCD). Despite comprehensive guidelines, screening rates remain very low. We conducted a field study in Meghalaya and Mizoram between 2021 and 2023 to identify barriers and facilitators to cancer screening uptake, involving a diverse group of stakeholders. METHODS: The mixed-methods study included 420 frontline health workers (FLHWs), 38 government offici

A stakeholder-driven approach to designing a peer recovery coach role for implementation in community-oriented primary care teams in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: In South Africa, community-oriented primary care teams work to re-engage out-of-care people with HIV (PWH) in treatment, many of whom have substance use (SU) concerns. SU stigma is high among these teams, limiting care engagement efforts. Integrating peer recovery coaches into community-oriented primary care teams could shift SU stigma and improve patients' engagement in care. The peer role does not exist in SA and represents a workforce innovation. To enhance acceptability, feasibility, and appropriateness for the local context, we engaged multiple stakeholder groups to co-desig

A core outcome set for evaluating self-management interventions in people with comorbid diabetes and severe mental illness: study protocol for a modified Delphi study and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: People with diabetes and comorbid severe mental illness (SMI) form a growing population at risk of increased mortality and morbidity compared to those with diabetes or SMI alone. There is increasing interest in interventions that target diabetes in SMI in order to help to improve physical health and reduce the associated health inequalities. However, there is a lack of consensus about which outcomes are important for this comorbid population, with trials differing in their focus on physical and mental health. A core outcome set, which includes outcomes across both conditions that a

Pediatric Off-Label and Unlicensed Drug Use and Its Implications.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, in the absence of standard pediatric prescribing information, clinicians often use medicines in children in a dosage form or for an indication that has not been approved for use. Inadequate clinical trials increase exposure to drugs that lack safety-efficacy data in pediatric population. Hence, off-label and unlicensed drug use must be regarded as a patient safety-issue that is known to be associated with increased risks of adverse drug reactions apart from under- or overdosing due to lack of pharmacokinetic data. This review aims to give an overview of the worldwide rep

Exchanging expertise and constructing boundaries: The development of a transnational knowledge network around heroin-assisted treatment.

Over the last 20 years, supervised injectable and inhalable heroin prescribing has been developed, tested and in some cases introduced as a second line treatment for limited groups of entrenched heroin users in a number of European countries and Canada. Based on documentary analyses and eleven key informant interviews, this paper investigates the growth of 'expertise' and the sharing of knowledge between scientific stakeholders from different countries involved in researching and developing this area of treatment. Drawing on Stone's concept of the 'knowledge network' (Stone, 2013) and Gieryn's

Emergency preparedness planning: lessons from COVID-19 and the opioid crisis in rural Ohio.

The COVID-19 pandemic amplified existing public health emergencies, including the overdose crisis. In rural areas, the effect of emergency preparedness planning on local responses to the pandemic is unknown. We conducted 52 semi-structured interviews with two participant groups (28 people who use drugs [PWUD] and 24 local stakeholders) in two rural counties in southern Ohio. Interviews explored service disruptions, perceptions of the pandemic, organizations' pre-existing emergency plans, and communication channels. Transcripts were analyzed thematically to identify data patterns within and bet

Therapeutic Development in Polyarticular Course Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: Extrapolation, Dose Selection, and Clinical Trial Design.

OBJECTIVE: Stakeholders met to address persistent challenges facing the development of therapeutics for polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA), which result in fewer approved therapies for children with pJIA than adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and long lag times from adult RA approval to pediatric labeling. Ensuring that new medications are authorized in a timely manner to meet the needs of JIA patients worldwide is critically important to multiple stakeholders. METHODS: The Food and Drug Administration in collaboration with the University of Maryland Center for Regulatory

Selecting topic areas for developing quality standards in a resource-limited setting.

Variation in practices of and access to health promotion and disease prevention (P&P) across geographical areas have been studied in Thailand as well as other healthcare settings. The implementation of quality standards (QS)-a concise set of evidence-informed quality statements designed to drive and measure priority quality improvements-can be an option to solve the problem. This paper aims to provide an overview of the priority setting process of topic areas for developing QS and describes the criteria used. Topic selection consisted of an iterative process involving several steps and relevan

Perspectives of stakeholders on running 'Pill School' in community settings: a survey based study.

OBJECTIVES: Liquid formulations are the most widely used pharmaceutical forms among children but may not be the most appropriate. 'Pill School' methodologies exist to teach children how to swallow tablets but are not yet integrated into primary care. The aim of this study was to explore the perspectives of key stakeholders on running 'Pill Schools'. METHODS: We used tailored surveys to gather perspectives from four key stakeholder groups: children and young people (CYP); parents and carers; school staff; and healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in general practice. KEY FINDINGS: In total,

Health Promotion Solutions for Chinese Miners: A Holistic Approach Considering Collaborative Governance and Locus of Control Perspectives.

Workplace health promotion (WHP) plays an important role in improving employees' health and well-being and promoting health communication in the industry. However, current health promotion activities for miners achieve limited outcomes, owing to the overlook of the cultivation of miners' autonomy, and the role of the supportive work environment. This study addressed this research gap following a multistep method. First, a comprehensive qualitative method based on intervention mapping was applied to determine the stakeholders, barriers, and facilitators in promoting miners' internal health locu

Views about neuromodulation interventions for depression by stakeholder group, treatment modality, and depression severity.

BACKGROUND: The past few decades have seen the emergence both of new neuromodulation treatment protocols and novel applications of standard neuromodulation interventions in psychiatry. Yet little is known about different stakeholders' views about these interventions. METHODS: We administered an online survey with an embedded video vignette experiment to four national samples: the general public (N = 1022), caregivers for people with depression (N = 1026), patients living with depression (N = 1050), and board-certified psychiatrists (N = 505). We randomly assigned subjects to one of eight cond

Consensus development of priority outcome domains for community mental health cares by multiple stakeholders: Protocol for an online Delphi study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Treatment goals for mental illness have expanded from hospital discharge and improved functioning to employment, living alone, and personal realization. These changes in treatment goals have also influenced mental health research. Recent studies have addressed the development of core outcome sets focusing on clinical aspects of mental illness such as depression and anxiety. However, a well-developed framework of essential outcomes for people with mental illness (service users) who live in the community is lacking. In addition, recent worldwide trends suggest more patient and public

Identifying targets for behavior change interventions to integrate biological maturation in German football development programs: A COM-B and Behavior Change Wheel analysis.

This study examines enablers and barriers to integrating biological maturation into talent identification and development processes within German football academies. Biological maturation significantly influences physical performance, selection decisions, and injury risk in youth football. Early maturing players are often favoured during talent identification, leading to premature deselection of talented late-maturing athletes. Using the COM-B framework (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation - Behaviour), we investigated stakeholders perceived barriers and enablers to implementing maturation str

Key stakeholders' experiences and expectations of the care system for individuals affected by borderline personality disorder: An interpretative phenomenological analysis towards co-production of care.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) consists of extreme emotional dysregulation and long-term disability when left untreated. It is associated with ineffective use of health care systems and mismanaged care in emergency departments, which can result in a revolving door phenomenon of urgent system usage, poor treatment outcomes, or patients falling out of care entirely-all of which primarily affect patients with BPD as well as their caregivers and clinicians. This crisis must be addressed with a comprehensive understanding of key stakeholder perspectives on the ch

Stakeholder perspectives on biosecurity adoption in the Colorado cattle supply chain: lessons from foot-and-mouth disease preparedness.

Biosecurity is essential to protecting cattle health and maintaining continuity of business during high-consequence disease events, yet adoption of preparedness measures remains uneven across the beef supply chain. Using foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) as a motivating case, we examine how Colorado cattle-industry stakeholders define practical biosecurity and what lessons support preparedness before an emergency. Data were collected through 12 focus groups and 18 individual interviews with 75 stakeholders across nine cattle-industry sectors, followed by four cross-sector workshops with 56 particip
