Opportunities for chlamydia control in the era of healthcare reform: lessons from two decades of innovative family planning care.

In the USA, family planning clinics are primary providers of reproductive healthcare to young women and their male partners and have long provided quality sexually transmitted infection (STI) care and prevention. Chlamydia, an easily treatable STI that can lead to serious adverse outcomes if untreated, is the most common bacterial STI in the USA, and annual chlamydia screening is recommended for sexually active women aged ≤25 years. As early adopters of routine screening, family planning clinics screen >50% of all care-seeking eligible women for chlamydia, performing better than private sector

Meeting health care needs of women experiencing complications of miscarriage and unsafe abortion: USAID's postabortion care program.

Each year, an estimated 210 million women become pregnant. Worldwide, more than one fourth of these pregnancies will end in abortion or an unplanned birth. While many abortions may result from the desire to delay or avoid pregnancy, 15% to 20% of pregnancies will end in miscarriage or stillbirth with some causative agents being malaria, HIV/AIDS, and physical violence. Postabortion care (PAC) is needed to provide treatment for complications caused by incomplete or spontaneous abortion and critical family planning counseling and services to prevent future unplanned pregnancies that may result i

OBJECTIVE: To quantify availability of MOUD at community outpatient MHTFs in high-burden states as well as characteristics associated with offering MOUD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study performed a phone survey between April and July 2023 among a representative sample of com

Emphasizing the Role of Neurosurgery Within Global Health and National Health Systems: A Call to Action.

Background: Worldwide, neurological disorders are the leading cause of disability-adjusted life years lost and the second leading cause of death. Despite global health capacity-building efforts, each year, 22.6 million individuals worldwide require neurosurgeon's care due to diseases such as traumatic brain injury and hydrocephalus, and 13.8 million of these individuals require surgery. It is clear that neurosurgical care is indispensable in both national and international public health discussions. This study highlights the role neurosurgeons can play in supporting the global health agenda, n

Spatial distribution and factors influencing modern contraceptive practice among tribal married women in India: evidence from National Family Health Survey 5 (2019-2021).

BACKGROUND: The unmet need for family planning has been a public health concern in developing countries, especially in the south-east region. In India, the expanding roles of women has led to a growing need for family planning and contraception. However, tribal women still struggle with reproductive and sexual health issues. Unfortunately, most tribal women are not informed about the potential health risks associated with contraceptive use, as service providers often neglect to provide this information. As a result, tribal women often suffer in silence, which can lead to serious health problem

To date, Project findings have yielded valuable insights into implementation strategy characteristics and effectiveness. This paper reports results of an effort to identify and classify state-level implementation activities and strategies

Neonatal screening for sickle cell diseases in Camberwell: results and recommendations of a two year pilot study.

The sickle cell diseases are a major health problem for Afro-Caribbean peoples. Neonatal detection and prophylactic management can reduce mortality and morbidity in childhood. A study was therefore conducted analysing the results of the first two years of cord blood screening in the Camberwell health area. Thirteen cases of sickle cell disease and two of haemoglobin (Hb)C disease were identified among 2202 non-white infants screened. The carrier state, sickle cell trait (HbAS), was present in 11.9% and HbC trait (HbAC) in 4.1% of Afro-Caribbean infants. The incidence of disease and of carrier

Effects of state coalitions to reduce underage drinking: a national evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Drinking by youth remains prevalent. The Reducing Underage Drinking through coalitions (RUD) project funded ten states for 8 years to form coalitions designed to change the policy and normative environment regarding youth access to alcohol. An independent national outcome evaluation of this $21-million effort was conducted. METHODS: Using a longitudinal quasi-experimental design, the ten intervention states were compared with the other 40 states, with repeated annual measures of outcomes from 1995 to 2004. Measures included print news media coverage, legislative bills enacted, y

The surgeon advocate's role in shaping state and federal policy.

Although most surgeons dedicate their careers to clinical excellence, education, and research, many overlook a critical fourth pillar of the profession, advocacy. Surgeons already advocate daily, whether guiding patients through care plans, performing technically complex operations, or navigating insurance barriers. However, few recognize their potential to influence broader health policies that directly affect their surgical practices. This article emphasizes the urgent need for surgeons to engage in both legislative and regulatory processes. Policy decisions, ranging from scope of practice l

Responding to the Fentanyl Overdose Crisis With a Tri-Government Incident Command Structure in Portland, Oregon, 2024.

CONTEXT: The increasing use of illicit fentanyl has contributed to a drastic increase in drug overdose fatalities throughout the United States. The rate of fatal fentanyl-related overdoses in Multnomah County, Oregon, was 1.6 times higher than the United States' average in 2022 and continued to rise in 2023. In January 2024, the Governor of Oregon, the Multnomah County Chair, and the Portland Mayor declared a 90-day tri-government emergency to augment and enhance the ongoing response to fentanyl use and overdose in Portland city center. EMERGENCY RESPONSE: Between January 31, 2024, and April

using photovoice to foster a student vision for natural spaces on a college campus in the Pacific Northwest United States.

Undergraduate students face a host of stressors and may be particularly susceptible to encountering health-related challenges throughout college life. Seventy-two (N = 72) undergraduate students enrolled at a newly developed university campus located in the pacific northwest United States used the photovoice research method in crafting a vision for how natural spaces on campus might be maintained and minimally developed to promote student health. Five student-created themes emerged: 1) mental and physical health, 2) developing community spaces, 3) sustainable infrastructure design, 4) preservi

[Adaptation to climate change-associated health risks as a task of environmental health protection. Analysis of a nationwide investigation by the Federal Environment Agency].

The German Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change (DAS, 2008) identified 'human health' as an important sector with a need for adaptation. In line with the DAS, the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and the Robert Koch Institute jointly elaborated guidelines for decision makers and stakeholders. Building on these, in 2013/2014, UBA has conducted a nationwide survey, collecting data on completed, ongoing and planned adaptation measures. UBA also analysed 32 adaptation strategies of the Federal States. Selected best practice examples of potential health-related prevention and adaptation measur

Declining fertility and increasing use of traditional methods of family planning: a paradox in Uttar Pradesh, India?

Uttar Pradesh (UP), with more than 220 million people, is the most populous state in India. Despite a high unmet need for modern family planning methods, the state has experienced a substantial decline in fertility. India has also seen a decline during this period which can be attributed to the increased prevalence of modern methods of family planning, particularly female sterilisation, but in UP, the corresponding increase was marginal. At the same time, Traditional Family Planning Methods (TMs) increased significantly in UP in contrast to India, where it was marginal. The trends in UP raise

A state wise analysis of the socioeconomic and health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in India: lessons for future health system preparedness.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected individuals, society, and the national economy. However, there is limited information on the socioeconomic dimension of COVID-19-related health impacts from nationally representative large datasets using an integrated approach. Such information is crucial for tailored policy responses and national preparedness planning. Our study aimed to assess the state-level health and economic impacts of COVID-19 in India. METHODS: The COVID-19 data on age and gender distribution were collated from the Registrar General of India, state dashboards, a
