A qualitative investigation of the occupational perceptions of firefighters with or without post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.

This qualitative study aims to examine the relationships between post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and the perceptions of Turkish firefighters, categorized by lower and higher degrees of PTSS, regarding work and family life, social interactions, and professional circumstances. Eleven firefighters participated in the interviews. The data was analyzed using a thematic approach. The high-PTSS group displayed symptoms such as re-experiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal, which impeded their daily functioning and occupational performance. The low-PTSS group recognized these symptoms as a natura

Executive functions in post-traumatic stress disorder: their relation to PTSD severity and daily functioning.

BACKGROUND: Executive function difficulties may be prevalent in people with PTSD, and they might negatively affect their behavior and daily functioning. However, knowledge about the implications of executive function deficits on daily functioning and the assessments that reflect functional limitations is limited. This study aimed to measure how executive function difficulties affect daily functioning in PTSD using ecologically valid assessments that imitate daily activities. METHODS: The participants were 66 individuals aged 18-65 years: 26 diagnosed with PTSD and 40 healthy controls. All par

Post-traumatic stress disorder in French Guiana: prevalence and risk factors in the general population.

BACKGROUND: The context of French Guiana-characterized by frequent violence and intense immigration from regions where traumatic events are common-may lead to a different epidemiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared with mainland France. In the absence of prior data, we aimed to estimate the overall prevalence of PTSD in the general population of French Guiana, along with its prevalence across different sociodemographic groups. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between March and August 2021, interviewing 881 subjects aged >17 years. RESULTS: The overall preval

The value of multimodal neuroimaging in the diagnosis and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder: a narrative review.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a delayed-onset or prolonged persistent psychiatric disorder caused by individuals experiencing an unusually threatening or catastrophic stressful event or situation. Due to its long duration and recurrent nature, unimodal neuroimaging tools such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and electroencephalography (EEG) have been widely used in the diagnosis and treatment of PTSD for early intervention. However, as compared with an unimodal approach, a multimodal imaging approach can better captur

MDMA-Assisted Therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Regulatory Challenges and a Path Forward.

Trauma is prevalent, with lifetime estimates of traumatic exposure ranging from 70% for a single event to 31% for multiple events. While many recover, a subset develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a debilitating condition characterized by distressing memories, avoidance behaviors, hyperarousal, and mood disturbances. The National Comorbidity Survey reports a lifetime PTSD prevalence of 6.8%, with higher rates among women and veterans. PTSD is strongly associated with suicidality, depression, and substance use, and its chronic nature can cause significant functional impairment. Despit

Exploring the Role of Reward Functioning in the Overlap of Post-Traumatic Stress and Cocaine Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are common in people with cocaine use disorder (CUD), and even sub-threshold PSTD symptoms result in worse treatment outcomes. Difficulties with reward functioning may drive this comorbidity. Impairments in reward functioning are prominent in both PTSD and CUD and contribute to development of substance use problems after trauma. There are three distinct reward processes that may be involved in the PTSD/CUD overlap: consummatory reward (ability to experience pleasure), motivational reward (willingness to exert effort for rewards), and re

Age-dependent effects of H2S on post-traumatic stress disorder in adolescent and adult mice.

BACKGROUND: Among people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), there is an increased prevalence of age-related diseases. However, the biological mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain incompletely understood. METHODS: The expression of cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), one of the main enzymes for endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production in the brain, is age-dependent. In this study, we examined the influence of CBS/H2S on anxiety and depression-like behavior following the inescapable foot shock (IFS) procedure during early adolescence (postnatal days 28-35) or adulthood (postnat

Esketamine attenuates post-traumatic stress disorder via suppressing neuroinflammation and abnormal myelination.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic psychological disorder that is induced by traumatic events. The pathophysiological mechanism of PTSD involves complex neurobiological processes. However, the underlying mechanism is not clear, leading to lack of effective therapeutic interventions. METHODS: Mice were exposed to the electric foot shocks using the contextual fear memory paradigm. A subanesthetic dose (30 mg/kg) of esketamine or saline was administered via intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection 1 h after the electric foot shocks. Fear retrieval was tested on day 1 and day
