A single Cyclosporin A (CsA) dose of 30 mg kg-1 given orally at day 4 post-infection (p.i.) to Sprague-Dawley rats infected with Strongyloid … ity of TBZ. The data suggests that for patients with current, historical or serological evidence of strongyloidiasis, CsA may be used where immunosuppressive therapy is required for other concurrent reasons or when TBZ is contraindicated.

An ex-coal miner was diagnosed with an idiopathic sigmoiditis compatible with colitis ulcerosa. He was treated with corticosteroids because of his deteriorating clinical condition, but his condition continued to worsen. He revealed to have a systemic Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection and Strongyloides colitis. A short time after diagnosis he died from septic shock despite therapy with thiabendazole and antibiotics. S. stercoralis is an opportunistic infection that is not uncommon and has high mortality in hyperinfection. It is prevalent in (sub)tropical areas, and also in coal mines bec

Eighty-eight residents of Curitiba, Brazil, with parasitologically proven Strongyloides stercoralis infection were assessed clinically and evaluated for their specific and non-specific responses to the parasite. A control group of 73 patients with other intestinal parasites, but with negative stools for S. stercoralis were also evaluated. Abdominal symptoms and/or weight loss were present in 24% of the patients with strongyloidiasis and in 25% of the patients with other parasites only. Elevated peripheral eosinophilia (greater than 5%) was present in 68% of the patients with strongyloidiasis (…

Hospitalized and domiciliary patients were studied to determine the incidence of the endemic nematode Strongyloides stercoralls in stool samples. Strongyloides was found in 14 (6.1%) of 229 hospitalized patients and in nine (2.6%) of 346 domiciliary patients. Clinical symptoms, laboratory data, and underlying diseases were compared for stool-positive and stool-negative patients. Infected patients were more likely to complain of abdominal bloating. They had a higher incidence of eosinophilia and guaiac-positive stools. They were more likely to have been treated with corticosteroids, cimetidine,

Detection of IgG antibodies to Strongyloides stercoralis in sera of 29 patients with strongyloidiasis was attempted by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using an extract of filariform larvae of S. stercoralis. The antibodies were found with a high degree of sensitivity in almost all patients. The ELISA values, however, did not correlate with the intensity of the infection or with differences in clinical and laboratory parameters. When the ELISA values of persons with Strongyloides were compared with those showing no S. stercoralis by faecal examinations, a significant difference wa…

The Pavia District, Northern Italy, is an endemic area of strongyloidiasis. This study reviews the epidemiology and clinics of 150 cases. For this purpose, subjects were categorized for sex, age, origin, profession, acute and chronic disease, symptoms due to larval migration, immunodepression (if present). The incidence, with male predominance (74.7%), peaked among adults (94.6%), and in rural areas (69.3%). Patients experienced digestive (58.6%), cutaneous (34.6%) and respiratory complaints (16.7%). Thiabendazole was successful in most cases, except for 6 gastroresected subjects. Mebendazole …

A 58 year old Chinese male, one week after arriving in Canada from Hong Kong, presented with acute abdominal pain and diarrhoea which was ra … ion of obliterative arteritis in this fatal case of haemorrhagic enteropathy is discussed. Clinical strongyloidiasis, in uncomplicated cases, varies from mild to severe with gastroenteritis, nausea, colicky abdominal pain, electrolyte imbalance and symptoms of malabsorption syndrome (MARCIAL-ROJAS, 1971). In malnourished individuals and patients with debilitating …

BACKGROUND: Data about pediatric strongyloidiasis are scarce in our setting.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter registry of cases of pediatric strongyloidiasis in Spain.
RESULTS: Among 138 cases, 76% were travelers/migrants. Overall, 32% were symptomatic, and 35% had eosinophilia (higher in symptomatic patients, P < 0.05). Confirmed diagnosis occurred in 10% (stool polymerase chain reaction), while 90% were probable (serology). Ivermectin was the first therapy (98%). Adequate follow-up after treatment was achieved in only 36%.
CONCLUSIONS: One-fourth of cases were authochthon…

Strongyloidiasis remains endemic in Okinawa, Japan; however, epidemiological data over the past 30 years are limited. This study aimed to assess the current seroprevalence of strongyloidiasis in Okinawa. We conducted a cross-sectional study at Okinawa Chubu Hospital in 2022. Serum samples from 1,485 participants were screened using an ELISA-based antibody test with the recombinant Strongyloides stercoralis antigen NIE. Seropositive participants underwent three stool examinations: the formalin-ether concentration method, agar plate culture, and real-time polymerase chain reaction. The crude ser…

Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused mainly by Strongyloides stercoralis, a nematode that can persist for decades in the human host with a very low parasitic burden and without specific symptoms. Hence, it is difficult to diagnose and control. Larval concentration and culture methods with fecal samples show higher sensitivity for the diagnosis of Strongyloides-infected individuals; however, these techniques are not routinely used, primarily due to the challenges associated with processing a substantial volume of fecal samples. In the current study, we comparatively evaluated…

The potential cross-transmission of Strongyloides stercoralis between dogs and humans has become an increasing focus of strongyloidiasis research and control programs. However, the role of cats and wild felids in the maintenance and transmission cycles of human and canine strongyloidiasis has received sparse attention. Feline strongyloidiasis epidemiology remain enigmatic. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the global prevalence of Strongyloides spp. in felines and reviewed cross-species infection studies to elucidate the transmission cycle of some feline Strongyloide…
