Improving the performance of proton exchange membranes (PEMs) through the synthesis of sulfonated polymers with elaborate molecular structures has received extensive approval. However, the tedious synthetic process and consequently high costs restrain their possible substitution for Nafion, a classic PEM material. Herein, a series of semi-crystalline sulfonated poly(ether ketone)s with fluorene-based units were prepared via direct copolymerization of commercially available monomers and followed post-sulfonation, namely SPEK-FD-x, where × represents the molar ratio of the fluorene-containing mo

The carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) has been increasingly used in orthopedics dentistry due to its excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties. However, the biological inertness and poor antibacterial activity limit its clinical applications. This paper focused on the performances of CFR-PEEK with porous morphology that were exposed to different sulfonation periods (1, 3, 5, and 10 min, corresponding to CP-S1, CP-S3, CP-S5, and CP-S10, respectively). Residual sulfuric acid was removed by acetone rinsing, NaOH immersion, and hydrothermal treatment before in vitr

Visceral pain caused by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) greatly diminishes the quality of life in affected patients. Yet, the mechanism of how IBD causes visceral pain is currently not fully understood. Previous studies have suggested that the central nervous system (CNS) and gut-brain axis (GBA) play an important role in IBD-inducing visceral pain. As one of the treatments for IBD, electroacupuncture (EA) has been used to treat various types of pain and gastrointestinal diseases in clinical practice. However, whether EA relieves the visceral pain of IBD through the gut-brain axis has not bee

BACKGROUND: Hyperkalaemia is frequent in haemodialysis (HD) patients and associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. Despite routine clinical use, evidence regarding the efficacy of potassium (K+) binders in HD is scant. We wished to compare the efficacy of patiromer (PAT) and sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) on K+ levels in this setting.
METHODS: We screened patients in three HD centres with pre-HD K+ value between 5.0 and 6.4 mmol/L, after an initial 2-week washout period for those previously on K+ binders. We included patients in an unblinded two-arm crossover trial comparing SPS

Dispersants can have a substantial impact on the rheological characteristics of coal-water slurry (CWS). Due to their advantages in cost and synthesis, linear dispersants are currently most often employed in the commercial manufacturing of CWS. However, this kind of dispersant gives limited performance because of its weak adsorption and steric hindrance effect on the coal-water interface. This work describes a new linear dispersant (PSAF) with a significant steric hindrance effect that was created by incorporating phenolic groups into its molecular architecture, which gives higher maximum coal

BACKGROUND: Chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acids (Cl-PFESA) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), used as perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) alternatives, were indicated as thyroid hormone disruptive toxicants in experimental studies. However, it is unclear whether prenatal exposure to Cl-PFESA and PFBS affects neonatal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in human.
OBJECTIVE: To disclose the relationships between prenatal Cl-PFESAs and PFBS exposure and neonatal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels based on a perspective cohort study.
METHODS: A total of 1015 pairs of mother and n

Piglet coccidiosis due to Cystoisospora suis is a major cause of diarrhea and poor growth worldwide. It can effectively be controlled by application of toltrazuril (TZ), and oral formulations have been licensed for many years. Recently, the first parenteral formulation containing TZ in combination with iron (gleptoferron) was registered in the EU for the prevention of coccidiosis and iron deficiency anemia, conditions in suckling piglets requiring routine preventive measures. This study evaluated the absorption and distribution of TZ and its main metabolite, toltrazuril sulfone (TZ-SO2), in bl

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 64-year-old patient with chronic renal failure and persistent hyperkalaemia not corrected by dialysis, was prescribed sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) at a low dose (30 g/day for 2 days a week during the long interdialytic interval). After 3 months of therapy, the patient developed intense abdominal pain with non-specific colitis identified with a colonoscopy. In addition, the biopsy specimens showed rhomboid SPS crystals in the intestinal mucosa. Fourteen months after discontinuing therapy, the patient again presented with colitis and persistent biopsy finding of SPS cry

A major challenge for LC-MS analysis is the ability to compare data between laboratories and across instrument platforms. Currently, mycotoxin determination relies on dereplication strategies based on physicochemical properties such as the m/z of the precursor and product ions. Unlike these intrinsic properties, retention time (tR) is an extrinsic property impacted by LC conditions, including mobile phases and column chemistry, making exchange of data between groups difficult. To address this, we are introducing the concept of incorporating an electrospray compatible, retention index (RI) syst

A serious consequence of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R) is oxidative damage, which causes mitochondrial dysfunction. The cascading ROS can propagate and potentially induce heme bleaching and protein cysteine sulfonation (PrSO3H) of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Herein we studied the mechanism of I/R-mediated irreversible oxidative injury of complex III in mitochondria from rat hearts subjected to 30-min of ischemia and 24-h of reperfusion in vivo. In the I/R region, the catalytic activity of complex III was significantly impaired. Spectroscopic analysis indicated th

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a stable environmental contaminant that can activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα). In the present work, the specific role of mouse and human PPARα in mediating the hepatic effects of PFOS was examined in short-term studies using wild type, Ppara-null and PPARA-humanized mice. Mice fed 0.006 % PFOS for seven days (∼10 mg/kg/day), or 0.003 % PFOS for twenty-eight days (∼5 mg/kg/day), exhibited higher liver and serum PFOS concentrations compared to controls. Relative liver weights were also higher following exposure to dietary PFOS i

BACKGROUND: Chronic neuropathic pain is a frequent sequel to peripheral nerve injury and maladaptive nervous system function. Divanillyl sulfone (DS), a novel structural derivative of 4,4'-dihydroxydibenzyl sulfoxide from a traditional Chinese medicine Gastrodia elata with anti-nociceptive effects, significantly alleviated neuropathic pain following intrathecal injection. Here, we aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of DS against neuropathic pain.
METHODS: A chronic constrictive injury (CCI) mouse model of neuropathic pain induced by sciatic nerve ligation was performed to evaluate

C1-C4 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are highly persistent chemicals that have been found in the environment. To date, much uncertainty still exists about their sources and fate. The importance of the atmospheric degradation of volatile precursors to C1-C4 PFAAs were investigated by studying their distribution and seasonal variation in remote Arctic locations. C1-C4 PFAAs were measured in surface snow on the island of Spitsbergen in the Norwegian Arctic during January-August 2019. Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), perfluoropropanoic acid (PFPrA), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), and trifluoromethane sul

Acne remains as the most common skin disease in the United States even despite multiple approved topical and systemic medications available. These treatments available over the counter and by prescription can be classified based on comedolytic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities and are often used in combination. Therefore, understanding of the mechanism of action is critical to achieving the best clinical outcome and synergy. One of the newer acne medications with historical data suggesting both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity is dapsone. In order to gain mechanistic

IMPORTANCE: Sodium polystyrene sulfonate is commonly prescribed for the treatment of hyperkalemia. Case reports of intestinal injury after administration of sodium polystyrene sulfonate with sorbitol resulted in a US Food and Drug Administration warning and discontinuation of combined 70% sorbitol-sodium polystyrene sulfonate formulations. There are ongoing concerns about the gastrointestinal (GI) safety of sodium polystyrene sulfonate use.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the risk of hospitalization for adverse GI events associated with sodium polystyrene sulfonate use in patients of advanced age.

In the current work, we report the discovery of new sulfonate and sulfamate derivatives of benzofuran- and benzothiophene as potent inhibitors of human carbonic anhydrases (hCAs) II, IX and XII. A set of derivatives, 1a-t, having different substituents on the fused benzofuran and benzothiophene rings (R = alkyl, cyclohexyl, aryl, NH2, NHMe, or NMe2) was designed and synthesized. Most of the derivatives exhibited higher potency than acetazolamide as inhibitors of the purified hCAII, IX and XII isoforms. The most potent inhibitors for hCAII, hCAIX and hCAXII were 1g, 1b and 1d with an IC50 ± SEM

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), a highly contagious disease in children, is caused by human enteroviruses, including enterovirus 71 (EV71), coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16), and coxsackievirus A6 (CVA6). Although HFMD is usually mild and self-limiting, EV71 infection occasionally leads to fatal neurological disorders. Currently, no commercial antiviral drugs for HFMD treatment are available. Here, numerous sulfonated azo dyes, widely used as food additives, were identified as having potent antiviral activities against human enteroviruses. Among them, brilliant black BN (E151) was able to inhib

A palladium-catalyzed direct C-H bond sulfonylation of indoles with the insertion of sulfur dioxide is achieved through a three-component reaction of 1-(pyridin-2-yl)indoles, DABCO·(SO2)2, and aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates under mild conditions. Diverse 2-sulfonated indoles are generated by using 10 mol % of palladium(II) bromide as the catalyst at room temperature. This synthetic approach is efficient by merging palladium catalysis and insertion of sulfur dioxide via a radical process. 2-Pyrimidinyl can be used as the directing group well as for the C-H bond sulfonylation. Additionally, th

INTRODUCTION: Hyperkalemia is a serious medical condition that often manifests in patients with chronic kidney disease and heart failure. Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors are known to improve outcomes in these disease states but can also cause drug-induced hyperkalemia. New therapeutic options exist for managing hyperkalemia in these patients which warrant evidence-based evaluation.
AIM: The objective of this article was to review the efficacy and safety evidence for patiromer, sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (ZS9), and sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) for the treatment of hyp
