Household size is critical to varicella-zoster virus transmission in the tropics despite lower viral infectivity.

The epidemiology and severity of infections can vary dramatically in different geographical regions. Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a particularly tractable model for investigating such global differences, since infections can be unambiguously identified. VZV is spread by aerosol to cause chickenpox, which, in temperate countries, is a relatively benign childhood infection; yet in tropical countries it tends to occur at later age, a trend associated with markedly increased severity including complications, hospitalization, and overall burden of care. To investigate global differences in the e

[A case of cutaneous myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis].

Due to increasing international travelling of European population, tropical parasitic diseases may be imported more frequently in temperate countries. We describe a subject who travelled in Brasil and returned to Italy with a subcutaneous nodule containing a phase-II Dermatobia hominis larva; such larva is reported with photographic documentation.

Predicted and inducible prophages display contrasting virulence gene profiles within the prophage-SaPI mobilome of Staphylococcus aureus.

Prophages play a significant role in bacterial evolution by shaping genomic diversity, virulence, and host adaptation. This study investigated the prophage composition of 109 clinical Staphylococcus aureus isolates obtained from four tertiary care hospitals in Mexico City and compared these results with data from 993 global genomes. Prophages were present in 97% of local isolates. Consistently, analysis of the global genome collection revealed a 99% prevalence, supporting the near ubiquity of prophages in S. aureus. Analysis identified 216 genomic regions corresponding to the predicted prophag

Genetic dissection of cold stress tolerance and yield potential under cold stress in nested synthetic wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) introgression libraries using multi-locus genome-wide association and haplotype analysis.

Cold stress is a major abiotic constraint to wheat production in temperate regions, particularly in the Kashmir Valley of north-western Himalayas, India, where prolonged low temperatures delay growth, reduce yield, and disrupt the rice-wheat cropping system. To address this challenge, we evaluated a panel of 340 nested synthetic hexaploid wheat introgression lines, developed by introgressing allelic diversity from Aegilops tauschii and Triticum durum into bread wheat. The panel was phenotyped for cold stress tolerance, electrolyte leakage index, and yield-related traits across three temperate

Surfacing and diving behavior associated with thermal physiology in oceanic habitats of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) in the western north Pacific Ocean.

INTRODUCTION: Thermal physiology is a pivotal biotic factor for the ecophysiology of commercially valuable tuna, influencing not only horizontal but also vertical behaviors. We aimed to examine how the thermal physiology of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis, SKJ) can explain the differences in their vertical behavior, focusing on surfacing and diving, among various thermal environments during their northward migration in the western North Pacific. METHODS: We analyzed archival tag data collected during 2012-2015, with individual time series (Fork length: 38-49 cm, N = 38) of swimming depth, w

The hidden burden: self-reported irritability in adolescent girls signals higher psychiatric risk.

BACKGROUND: Most research on pediatric irritability focuses on children and/or relies on parent reports. We examined how self-reported irritability in adolescents influences the prevalence, sex distribution and correlates of irritability relative to children and parent reports. METHODS: Using data from Mental Health of Children and Young People Survey 2017 in England we contrasted the prevalence of irritability, encompassing irritable mood and temper outbursts, in 2,740 adolescents aged 12-17 (50.3% females), based on parent- and self-report, with that of 4,141 children aged 5-11 (49.4% femal

Dysbiosis and intestinal inflammation caused by Salmonella Typhimurium in mice can be alleviated by preadministration of a lytic phage.

Many studies have shown the efficacy of phage therapy in reducing intestinal pathogens. However, phage-based probiotic treatment is poorly studied in view of effects on the gut microbiota and intestinal inflammation. In this study, a lytic or a temperate phage (each at 4 ×108 PFU per day) or a streptomycin solution (40 mg per day) were administered to mice via drinking water for 31 days. Subsequently, mice were challenged with Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium). S. Typhimurium does not serve as the host bacterium and is not lysed by both phages. For intest

Diagnosis of the weakened global land carbon sink enhancement in recent decades: When and where the shifts occurred.

The terrestrial carbon sink is a major regulator of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) growth, yet its long-term trajectory and stability remain uncertain. Linear trend-based assessments may obscure nonlinear evolution and trend shifts. Here, we reassess global terrestrial carbon sink dynamics from 1981 to 2020 using ensemble outputs from dynamic global vegetation models combined with ensemble empirical mode decomposition. We find that although the global land carbon sink has approximately doubled, its rate of enhancement has declined sharply, falling to nearly half of its early-period value. Th

Efficient traceless modification of the P1 bacteriophage genome through homologous recombination with enrichment in double recombinants: A new perspective on the functional annotation of uncharacterized phage genes.

The advent of high-throughput omic technologies has caused unprecedented progress in research on bacteriophages, the most abundant and still the least explored entities on earth. Despite the growing number of phage genomes sequenced and the rejuvenation of interest in phage therapy, the progress in the functional analysis of phage genes is slow. Simple and efficient techniques of phage genome targeted mutagenesis that would allow one to knock out particular genes precisely without polar effects in order to study the effect of these knock-outs on phage functions are lacking. Even in the case of

The Botfly, A Tropical Menace: A Distinctive Myiasis Caused by Dermatobia hominis.

Dermatobia hominis, also known as the human botfly, is native to tropical and subtropical Central and South America and seen in travelers from endemic to temperate regions including the United States and Europe. Cutaneous infestation botfly myiasis involves the development of D. hominis larvae in the skin and is common in tropical locations. The distinct appearance of a cutaneous D. hominis infestation facilitates early diagnosis and intervention where cases are common. However, the identification of D. hominis in temperate regions may prove challenging due to its rarity. D. hominis may be mis

Hidden effects of avian malaria under climate warming.

Disruption of the temperature-humidity balance poses a threat to global ecosystems and affects the spread of infectious diseases. A long-term study by Theodosopoulos et al. on a wild bird population in a temperate region of Northern Europe reveals a significant increase in avian malaria parasite prevalence under a climate-warming scenario.

Rhino-orbitocerebral zygomycosis caused by Conidiobolus incongruus in an immunocompromised patient in Germany.

Mucorales (subphylum Mucoromycotina) are well-known agents of invasive mucormycosis, whereas Entomophthorales (subphylum Entomophthoromycotina) are rarely encountered in human diseases in temperate zones. Here we report a fatal case of invasive rhino-orbitocerebral entomophthoramycosis caused by Conidiobolus incongruus in a 78-year-old woman with myelodysplastic syndrome.

Isolation of St. Louis encephalitis virus from overwintering Culex pipiens mosquitoes.

Two strains of St. Louis encephalitis virus were isolated from overwintering mosquitoes collected in Maryland and Pennsylvania during January and February 1977. There isolations from Culex pipiens constitute evidence that a mosquito-borne flavivirus can persist in a vector mosquito in temperate climates during the winter season.

Atmospheric formaldehyde production on early Mars leading to a potential formation of bio-important molecules.

Formaldehyde (H2CO) is a critical precursor for the abiotic formation of biomolecules, including amino acids and sugars, which are the building blocks of proteins and RNA. Geomorphological and geochemical evidence on Mars indicates a temperate environment compatible with the existence of surface liquid water during its early history at 3.8-3.6 billion years ago (Ga), which was maintained by the warming effect of reducing gases, such as H2. However, it remains uncertain whether such a temperate and weakly reducing surface environment on early Mars was suitable for producing H2CO. In this study,

The interaction between the proliferating macroalga Asparagopsis taxiformis and the coral Astroides calycularis induces changes in microbiome and metabolomic fingerprints.

Mediterranean Sea ecosystems are considered as hotspots of biological introductions, exposed to possible negative effects of non-indigenous species. In such temperate marine ecosystems, macroalgae may be dominant, with a great percentage of their diversity represented by introduced species. Their interaction with temperate indigenous benthic organisms have been poorly investigated. To provide new insights, we performed an experimental study on the interaction between the introduced proliferative red alga Asparagopsis taxiformis and the indigenous Mediterranean coral Astroides calycularis. Chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum, granuloma inguinale, genital herpes simplex infection, and molluscum contagiosum.

Chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum, and granuloma inguinale may be considered as tropical venereal diseases. These diseases were a major diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in past centuries. Currently, patients with these bacterial infections that are endemic to the tropics occasionally consult with dermatologists in temperate climates. Due to the increasing frequency of travel to the tropics for tourism and work, as well as the increasing number of immigrants from these areas, it is important for dermatologists practicing in temperate climates to be familiar with the dermatologic manifesta

Ethnicity and glaucoma: higher environmental temperatures may accelerate the onset, and increase the prevalence, of primary open-angle glaucoma.

Publications on the age-related prevalence of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) show that African and African-descended patients and others living in warm climates present a higher prevalence of POAG than do those in temperate zones. The data have been analysed in order to discover whether temperature plays a role. The relation between AOO, the youngest age diagnosed with POAG, and prevalence has also been examined. Prevalences at the age of 70 years P(70) were calculated from logarithmic plots, and logP(70), plotted as a function of the average monthly maximum temperature T degrees C, and te

The evolution of ectoparasitism in the genus Lucilia (Diptera:Calliphoridae).

To consider the evolutionary origin of the ectoparasitic habit in the blowfly genus Lucilia (Diptera:Calliphoridae), phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequence data were performed for 10 species, including all the common Lucilia agents of myiasis, collected from Africa, Australasia, North America and Europe. Complementary genetic distance and parsimony analyses are used to consider inter and intraspecific relationships within the genus with reference to previous morphological work. The results support the hypothesis of independent multiple evolution of the ectoparasitic habit in Lucil
