Fatalities due to indigenous and exotic species in Florida.

Florida's climate is suitable for many potentially hazardous animals, including both indigenous and exotic species, which are frequently kept as in zoos or as pets. This has resulted in many unforeseen fatal encounters between animals and the ever expanding human population. While the literature and knowledge pool for more common types of deaths referred to medical examiner/coroner's offices is abundant, the appreciation of wildlife and exotic pet-related deaths is far less widespread. We report seven animal attack-related deaths that occurred in Florida. The inflicted injuries included blunt

Lingering doubts about spongiform encephalopathy and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is an infectious disease and has been transmitted orally to many other animals, including humans. The … tzfeldt-Jakob disease. The BSE agent has caused spongiform encephalopathies (SEs) in domestic cats, tigers, and in some species of ruminants in zoos. The nature of the BSE agent remains unchanged when passaged through a range of species, irrespective of their genetic make up, demonstrating that variations in the host PrP gene are not a major factor in th …

Early environmental determinants of childhood asthma.

The global prevalence of childhood asthma has undergone profound shifts, marked by a late-20th-century plateau in Western nations and a rapidly emerging epidemic across many developing countries. Traditional risk factors, such as air pollution, allergen exposure, and viral infections-fail to fully explain these trends. Instead, many birth cohorts and migrant studies strongly implicate changing early-life environments. Grounded in the hygiene and biodiversity hypotheses, this review explores the critical environmental determinants of childhood asthma. We synthesize global epidemiological data h

Investigating the Predation Risk of Coastal Dolphins via the Presence of Shark Bite Scars Across Southeast Queensland, Australia.

Predation and its risk influence the ecology and evolution of both predator and prey species. Despite this, predatory attempts of large apex sharks on cetaceans often remain unobserved, constraining empirical assessments of their frequency and ecological significance. Shark bite scars can be used as an indirect measure to quantify predation risk on dolphins and may reveal species-specific and spatial patterns of predator-prey interactions. Here, we analysed photographs of coastal dolphins in southeast Queensland, Australia to compare predation risk between multiple dolphin species across diffe

Dyslipidemia and hypercalciuria in a patient with pantothenate kinase 2 deficiency: A novel variant and case report.

Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN, OMIM: 234200) results from biallelic pathogenic variants in PANK2 which encodes pantothenate kinase 2, a crucial mitochondrial enzyme involved in coenzyme A biosynthesis. Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration patients typically exhibit the distinctive "eye of the tiger" sign on brain magnetic resonance imaging in the globus pallidus, along with psychiatric symptoms, extrapyramidal movements such as parkinsonism and dystonia, eventual speech and gait impairments, and the presence of dysphagia. An 11-year-old girl, with fifth-deg

Global, asynchronous partial sweeps at multiple insecticide resistance genes in Aedes mosquitoes.

Aedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito) and Ae. albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito) are globally invasive pests that confer the world's dengue burden. Insecticide-based management has led to the evolution of insecticide resistance in both species, though the genetic architecture and geographical spread of resistance remains incompletely understood. This study investigates partial selective sweeps at resistance genes on two chromosomes and characterises their spread across populations. Sweeps at the voltage-sensitive sodium channel (VSSC) gene on chromosome 3 correspond to one resistance-associated

Larval Competition between Aedes and Culex Mosquitoes Carries over to Higher Arboviral Infection during Their Adult Stage.

The common house mosquito (Culex pipiens) is a native vector for West Nile virus (WNV). Invasive species like the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) and Asian bush mosquito (Aedes japonicus) are rapidly spreading through Europe, posing a major threat as vectors for dengue, chikungunya (CHIKV), and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). These mosquitoes share a similar ecological niche as larvae, but the carry-over effects of aquatic larval interactions to the terrestrial adult stage remain largely unknown and their medical relevance requires further investigation. This study examines the context de

The Paramedian Supracerebellar Infratentorial Approach: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

INDICATIONS: The supracerebellar-infratentorial approach uses the plane between the tentorium and the superior surface of the cerebellum to expose the pineal region. ANATOMIC ESSENTIALS: The bone opening is just underneath the level of the transverse sinus, and so its position must be noted preoperatively. The anatomy of the internal cerebral veins and the veins of Galen and Rosenthal should be examined as well. ESSENTIALS STEPS OF THE PROCEDURE: The sitting position allows gravity-assisted expansion of the supracerebellar corridor, and a paramedian approach provides the biggest working spac

Sperm Cryopreservation as a Tool for Amphibian Conservation: Production of F2 Generation Offspring from Cryo-Produced F1 Progeny.

Sperm cryopreservation and biobanking are emerging as tools for supporting genetic management of small and threatened populations in amphibian conservation programs. However, there is little to no evidence demonstrating reproductive maturity and viability of offspring generated with cryopreserved sperm, potentially limiting widespread integration of these technologies. The purpose of this report is to demonstrate that amphibian sperm can be cryopreserved and thawed to successfully produce individuals of an F1 generation that can reach adulthood and reproductive maturity, to generating viable g

A first for Southern Africa: description of a new Heterobothrium (Monogenea: Diclidophoridae) parasitizing the evileye pufferfish Amblyrhynchotes honckenii (Tetraodontiformes: Tetraodontidae).

The monogenean genus Heterobothrium (Monogenea: Diclidophoridae) currently consists of 12 accepted species described globally from various pufferfishes (Tetraodontidae). This includes the economically important Heterobothrium okamotoi Ogawa 1991 that causes severe disease in the cultured tiger puffer Takifugu rubripes in Japan. During parasitological surveys targeting near shore marine fishes of South Africa, a new Heterobothrium was discovered on the gills of five evileye pufferfish Amblyrhynchotes honckenii with a prevalence of 100% and mean intensity of 23 (4-72). Specimens were morphologic

Assessing the suitability for Aedes albopictus and dengue transmission risk in China with a delay differential equation model.

Dengue is considered non-endemic to mainland China. However, travellers frequently import the virus from overseas and local mosquito species can then spread the disease in the population. As a consequence, mainland China still experiences large dengue outbreaks. Temperature plays a key role in these outbreaks: it affects the development and survival of the vector and the replication rate of the virus. To better understand its implication in the transmission risk of dengue, we developed a delay differential equation model that explicitly simulates temperature-dependent development periods and t

Practical application of laparoscopic oviductal artificial insemination for the propagation of domestic cats and wild felids.

AI was first reported in cats almost 50 years ago but, unlike AI in other domesticated animals (e.g. dogs, cattle, horses), has not been widely used for routine propagation by veterinarians or breeders. Anatomical and physiological challenges with cats have hindered the efficiency of AI using standardised transcervical approaches applied to other species. Development of laparoscopic oviductal AI (LO-AI) has helped overcome some of these barriers and, during the past 7 years, produced high pregnancy percentages (>70%) in domestic cats using both fresh collected and frozen-thawed semen and resul

Detection of Snake Venom in Post-Antivenom Samples by Dissociation Treatment Followed by Enzyme Immunoassay.

Venom detection is crucial for confirmation of envenomation and snake type in snake-bite patients. Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) is used to detect venom, but antivenom in samples prevents venom detection. We aimed to detect snake venom in post-antivenom samples after dissociating venom-antivenom complexes with glycine-HCl (pH 2.2) and heating for 30 min at 950 °C. Serum samples underwent dissociation treatment and then Russell's viper venom or Australian elapid venom measured by EIA. In confirmed Russell's viper bites with venom detected pre-antivenom (positive controls), no venom was detected in u

[Mosquitoes as vectors for exotic pathogens in Germany].

As a result of intensified globalization of international trade and of substantial travel activities, mosquito-borne exotic pathogens are becoming an increasing threat for Europe. In Germany some 50 different mosquito species are known, several of which have vector competence for pathogens. During the last few years a number of zoonotic arboviruses that are pathogenic for humans have been isolated from mosquitoes in Germany including Usutu, Sindbis and Batai viruses. In addition, filarial worms, such as Dirofilaria repens have been repeatedly detected in mosquitoes from the federal state of Br

Delayed diagnosis of intracranial injury due to a dog bite--a case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: Dog bite injury of the head and neck is not rare in children although intracranial injury is reported anecdotally. Among the case reports there is a significant number of patients in whom the diagnosis of penetrating cranial injury was delayed. The aim of the study was to describe a patient with a trans mastoid head injury due to a dog bite that was not diagnosed at presentation and review similar cases in the literature. METHODS: A 13-year-old girl was admitted to the emergency room with severe head, neck and breast lacerations. She was transferred to the operating room for debri

Whole body muscle MRI protocol: pattern recognition in early onset NM disorders.

A paediatric and adult whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) protocol using a 1.5-T MRI system was used to examine 117 individuals (106 patients, 11 asymptomatic relatives). Genetic diagnosis was obtained in 38 subjects (RYR1, LMNA, COL6, DNM2, GAA, TPM2, SGCA, MYH7, NEB, SMN, FKBP14). T1-TSE WB-MRI sequences were abnormal in 67% of patients and 27% of asymptomatic relatives. Multiple striped signal abnormalities ('tiger-like') were very specific for COLVI-related myopathy. Distinct involvement of muscles in the head, neck, trunk, girdles and limbs was observed in patients with RYR1, SEPN1, GAA, LMNA or TPM

Commercial monovalent antivenoms in Australia are polyvalent.

Monovalent antivenoms have a lower volume of specific antibodies that may reduce reactions but require accurate snake identification to be used. Polyvalent antivenoms are larger volume and may have a higher reaction rate. However, they avoid the problem of snake identification and may be more cost-effective to manufacture. We have previously shown cross-neutralisation of two Australian elapid venoms, tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) and brown snake (Pseudonaja textilis) venoms, by their respective monovalent antivenoms. In this study enzyme immunoassays were used to quantify the amount of monov
