Optical coherence tomography for observation of the olfactory epithelium in mice.

OBJECTIVE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging tool that exploits the coherence of infrared light and is clinically utilized in the field of ophthalmology and dermatology. This study aimed to examine the feasibility of using OCT for diagnosing degeneration and regeneration of the olfactory epithelium in mice. METHODS: The olfactory and respiratory epithelia in excised nasal septa of adult mice were observed using OCT. Subsequently, histological assessments were performed with hematoxylin and eosin (H-E) staining. The thicknesses of the olfactory or respiratory epithelia were meas

Optical coherence tomography and neurodegeneration: are eyes the windows to the brain?

INTRODUCTION: Central nervous system (CNS) pathologies have ocular manifestations due to direct and/or retrograde degeneration of the visual pathways, most often related to a direct injury to the optic nerve, retinal ganglion cells and/or its surrounding cells. These ocular manifestations can be recognized and monitored by a non-invasive technique called Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). AREAS COVERED: This review article describes the OCT technique and its application in various neurological pathologies. OCT helps in the measurement of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) and macula

Optical coherence tomography in Parkinson's disease: is the retina a biomarker?

Visual symptoms are a common feature in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), and retinal dopamine loss and dysfunctions in foveal vision have been described in PD patients. Because visual hallucination (VH) is a specific feature of PD which is differentiated from other parkinsonian disorders, defective visual information processing from both the central and peripheral pathways is suggested to be the pathophysiological mechanisms of VH in PD. Decreased visual acuity as well as impaired contrast sensitivity and color vision is known to be related to the appearance of VH in PD. However, these

Detection of the regression on hydroxychloroquine retinopathy in optical coherence tomography.

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) that is widely used in the treatment of the connective tissue disorders can cause retinopathy. The fundus examination of a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus receiving HCQ revealed left incomplete bull's eye and pigmentary changes in macula in the right eye. Repeated visual field tests showed the paracentral and peripheral defects in the right eye and the pericentral ring scotoma in the left eye. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans revealed the photoreceptor loss, retina pigment epithelium (RPE) irregularities, and a cyst-like hypo reflective space over RPE

A multicentre evaluation of the safety of intracoronary optical coherence tomography.

AIMS: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is increasingly being applied to the coronary arteries. However, the risks associated with the imaging procedure are not yet well defined. The purpose of the present multicentre registry was to assess the acute complications associated with the clinical use of intra-coronary OCT in a large number of patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: Consecutive patients from six centres who had OCT examination were retrospectively included. All adverse events and complications, even if transient, were noted. Risks were categorised into: 1) self-limiting 2) major complicat

Reference Power Optimization for Common-Path Probes in Optical Coherence Tomography.

Common-path optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) has garnered significant interest for use in biomedical imaging due to its compact configuration, enhanced phase stability, and reduced sensitivity to environmental disturbances. The imaging performance of a common-path probe is significantly influenced by the reference power generated within the probe, which determines the interference modulation, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), phase stability, and ultimately, the image quality. This study presents a systematic optimization of reference power in a fiber-based common-path OCT probe through numeri

Evaluating Risankizumab's Long-Term Effects in Psoriasis Using Optical Coherence Tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with multiple systemic comorbidities and reduced quality of life. Risankizumab, an interleukin (IL)-23 inhibitor, has demonstrated efficacy in achieving rapid and sustained skin clearance in moderate-to-severe psoriasis. However, its impact on chronic subclinical inflammation is less understood. Conventional clinical assessments like Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA), and Body Surface Area (BSA) focus on evaluating visible symptoms and are limited in capturing underlying disease

Spatio-temporal optical coherence imaging and tomography for in vivo applications.

SIGNIFICANCE: Strong scattering in biological tissues limits the achievable imaging depth and produces noiseboth coherent and incoherentthat impairs contrast in volumetric in vivo reconstructions. By dynamically tailoring spatial and temporal coherence to suppress scattered photons, spatio-temporal optical coherence imaging (STOC) enables high-contrast, high-resolution in vivo visualization, with direct applications in ophthalmic diagnostics and complex tissue imaging. AIM: The primary aim of this work is to formalize and validate the theoretical foundations and practical implementations of S

Optical Coherence Tomography and Angiography in Hydroxychloroquine Retinopathy: A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is widely used in the treatment of autoimmune rheumatologic diseases due to its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. However, long-term HCQ therapy carries a risk of irreversible retinal toxicity caused by drug accumulation in the retinal pigment epithelium. The early identification of preclinical retinal changes is essential to prevent permanent visual impairment. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT-angiography (OCT-A) have emerged as key imaging modalities for the detection of structural and microvascular biomarkers of HCQ

Optical coherence tomography in neurovascular intervention: Technical aspects and emerging directions.

Since its initial introduction to interventional cardiology over two decades ago, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has emerged as a powerful tool in neurovascular intervention. This intravascular imaging modality uses near-infrared light to provide cross-sectional visualization of the vessel wall with a resolution approaching 10 μm. The resolution of OCT far surpasses that of other imaging techniques. This higher resolution enables radiologists to directly assess arterial wall disease, including atherosclerotic plaque, aneurysm, and thrombus, as well as the interaction between therapeutic de

The potential of optical coherence tomography angiography in progressive multiple sclerosis.

Early detection and monitoring of neurodegenerative processes in persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) is currently a major challenge. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is an emerging method to visualize retinal vascular architecture. However, its use has mainly been investigated in relapsing MS. We evaluated OCTA as a possible complementary method in progressive MS (PMS) in a monocentric, retrospective, cross-sectional study. Eyes with evidence of optic neuritis were excluded from analysis. OCTA images acquired using a Spectralis OCT (Heidelberg Engineering) were analyzed with
