Introduction of thiourethane (TU) oligomer to resin-based dental restorative materials reduces stress and improves fracture toughness without compromising conversion. Localization of TU at the resin-filler interface via silanization procedures may lead to more substantial stress reduction and clinical property enhancements. The objective of this study was to evaluate composite properties as a function of TU-functionalized filler concentration. TU oligomers were synthesized using click-chemistry techniques and subsequently silanized to barium glass filler. Resin-based composites were formulated

External inflammatory root resorption after a jaw fracture is rare. This report describes a case of extensive external root resorption in the middle third of the root of a mandibular right canine after a mandibular fracture involving the tooth socket. Because of delayed treatment and damage to the root caused by a surgical screw, root canal treatment was performed followed by surgical intervention. The resorptive defect was debrided and part of the root was rebuilt with conventionally setting restorative glass ionomer cement. Postoperative follow-up revealed complete healing.

Among injuries that affect permanent teeth, the most prevalent is an uncomplicated crown fracture. Currently, autogenous bonding of the fragments is still the procedure of choice to restore fractured anterior teeth if the fragments are recovered by the patient and taken to a dental office within a reasonable time in an appropriate storage medium. There is no study or case report in the literature regarding autogenous bonding of lower incisors. This study presents a case with a 17-year follow-up for a 9-year-old patient who underwent uncomplicated crown fractures of the permanent mandibular cen

OBJECTIVES: This article is part of a randomized clinical trial on different treatments in the shortened dental arch (SDA). It focused on the abutment tooth prognosis with cantilevered fixed dental prostheses (CFDPs).
METHODS: Sixty-two patients with a bilaterally SDA up to the first or second premolar in the mandible or maxilla were evaluated. In 57 of 124 quadrants, second premolars were replaced by a CFDP (cantilever group). In the remaining 67 quadrants, a natural second premolar was present and thus no need for a CFDP was given (non-cantilever group). Patients were recalled annually up t

Intrusion is the most severe luxation injury type, which results in both soft and hard tissue damage. In severe intrusions, the crown must be re-positioned in the arch to avoid periapical pathology and marginal bone loss. There is minimal information about the effect of treatment delay on pulpal and periodontal healing in intrusion trauma. The present paper reports on two cases of severe intrusive luxation applied late at different times treated with surgical extrusion. The first patient, an 11-year-old female, referred to Tokat GOP pediatric dentistry clinic three days after the intrusion too

Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA), also known as hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV, is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder. This study investigated the oral and craniofacial manifestations of a 7-year-old Chinese boy affected by CIPA and identified 2 novel mutations in the NTRK1 gene, and a new feature of the disorder was identified. The patient had typical features, including insensitivity to pain, anhidrosis, and mental retardation; recurrent fractures and osteoporosis also were noted. His oral and craniofacial manifestations included congen

The incidence of screw/tooth contact in the placement of transalveolar screws was prospectively studied. The clinical significance of such contact when it occurred was assessed. Patients with fractures of the mandible requiring intra- or post-operative control of their occlusion with transalveolar screws were entered into the study. Following screw removal, contact was assessed radiographically and all teeth adjacent to screws were tested for vitality. Any contacts were judged to be minor if less than 50% of the diameter of the screw hole impinged on a tooth root or major if this was more than

BACKGROUND: Restoring endodontically treated premolars (ETPMs) with mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavities poses clinical challenges due to reduced coronal thickness and heightened fracture risk. Despite advances in adhesive dentistry, the biomechanical effects of residual lateral wall (RLW) thickness and composite resin reinforcement on the performance of ceramic endocrowns in ETPMs remain underdefined. This study aims to evaluate how RLW thickness and resin reinforcement influence fracture resistance, stress distribution, and failure modes in ETPMs restored with ceramic endocrowns.

Cemental tear (CeT) is a rare clinical finding characterized by a partial or complete detachment of a portion of the cementum from the root surface. CeT is a well-documented condition in the adult population, particularly among older individuals with periodontal disease, occlusal stress, or traumatic dental injuries (TDI). The prevalence of CeT in adults ranges from 0.9% to 2%. However, CeT has not been previously reported in the pediatric population. Approximately, one in three children experiences TDI, which subjects the teeth to a magnitude of force that can lead to cemental separation in b

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been widely used in diagnosis of vertical root fractures (VRFs) in recent years. According to the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) classification, there are five types of cracked teeth and VRF is one of them. Due to the variability and overlapping of the cracks and fractures, some narrow fractures on the roots of VRFs could not be detected by CBCT, and some wide cracks on the crown of cracked teeth could be detected by CBCT. In this review, we firstly discussed the value of CBCT in the diagnosis of the AAE five types of cracked teeth and prese

BACKGROUND/AIM: Fractures of the mandible, especially the mandibular angle, are one of the most frequent types of injuries of the facial skeleton. In many cases, a retained third molar can be found in the line of the fracture. However, it remains unclear whether a relationship between third molars and mandibular angle fractures exists.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with isolated or combined fractures of the lower jaw between January 2001 and December 2007 were analyzed retrospectively. Electronic health records were investigated regarding the types of mandibular fractures, and panoramic rad

The objective of this case report is to describe the treatment procedure involved in surgical extrusion of multiple crown-root fractures and review the critical factors to be considered for successful and predictable outcome. The treatment of complicated crown-root fracture in anterior teeth is likely to compromise function and aesthetics when approached with conventional surgical crown lengthening. Orthodontic extrusion has also been suggested; however, it is time-consuming, aesthetically compromising and hardly applicable on multiple anterior crown-root fractures due to the limited source of

Management of root fracture of mandibular lateral incisors during mixed dentition with developing crowding in a ten year old boy by bilateral surgical extraction. Migration of permanent canine into the extracted region of lateral incisors was favourable with minimal spacing in between the rest of the teeth. The near normal parallel position of the roots of the permanent canines was achieved by early treatment planning of extraction of the lateral incisors instead of treating by other modalities which have a poor prognosis.

A clinical case of exarticulation and replantation served to discuss recent insights regarding the treatment of total avulsions of permanent teeth. A flow chart representing all treatment options is given. The tooth has been replanted in near ideal conditions; within one hour after the avulsion, the young patient attended the dental school with his avulsed tooth stored in milk. After replantation, a very simple splint was applied for only a fortnight and a provisory endodontic therapy with calcium hydroxide was performed. Adequate oral hygiene measures supported with chlorhexidine gel were ins

The composite reinforcement technique has been used clinically to salvage damaged root-filled teeth compromised by caries, trauma, developmental abnormalities, internal resorption and iatrogenic causes. This clinical case report describes the use of the technique to reattach a fractured fragment in a compromised endodontically treated root besides reinforcing it for continued function in the mouth. Factors of clinical importance related to this additional application; including reattachment of tooth fragments, post crown retention, coronal microleakage and fracture resistance and strength, are

This report describes the surgical management and long-term follow-up of a dentigerous cyst associated with an ectopic mandibular third molar located in the condylar process. A 55-year-old female presented with pain, limited mouth opening, and a "cyst near the ear." Imaging revealed a radiolucent lesion in the left mandibular ramus associated with an impacted tooth in the condyle. Histopathologic analysis following incisional biopsy confirmed a dentigerous cyst. Given the lesion size and the inaccessible position of the tooth, surgical excision was performed through a preauricular approach und
