Toothbrushing and gingival recession.

To review the hypothesis that toothbrushing leads to gingival recession. Gingival recession develops due to anatomical and pathological factors. The prevalence of recession is dependent on the age and characteristic of the population because it usually presents in individuals with periodontal disease or those who practise zealous or improper oral hygiene methods. Gingival trauma and gingival abrasion from toothbrushing is thought to progress directly to gingival recession. Case studies documenting recession from toothbrush trauma are speculative. Short-term studies suggest that gingival trauma

Contact vitiligo: etiology and treatment.

Fifty patients of contact vitiligo were studied. Etiological agents of contact vitiligo were identified by clinical history, distribution of lesions and patch testing with suspected material. All patients were advised to avoid the suspected agent and treated with PUVASOL and topical steroid. Out of 50 patients (Male 8%, Female 92% age 14-60 years)., etiological agent of contact vitiligo was found to be sticking bindi alone in 24 (48%), while bindi along with other etiological agents were found to be purse, foot wear, plastic watch strap, lipstick and tooth paste in 14 (28%) cases. 14 (28%) pat

Localized gingival recession caused by a C-PAP mask: a case report.

This case report describes a localized gingival recession on the labial of tooth # 6 caused by the nasal mask of a C-PAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) machine. The patient was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Treatment consisted of night-time use of a C-PAP machine. The patient noticed sudden exposure of the root surface on no. 6 and sought evaluation by his family dentist. He was referred to a periodontist for evaluation. A subepithelial connective tissue graft was performed to repair the defect. A maxillary bite splint with a buccal and apical extension to protect the graft

An adolescent female Neandertal mandible from Montgaudier Cave, Charente, France.

In 1974, an incomplete human mandible was discovered in the site of Montgaudier Cave, along the Tardoire (Charente), France. The mandible was found in association with stone tools and animal bones in geological deposits referable to the very end of the Middle Pleistocene or the beginning of the Upper Pleistocene. The mandible preserves much of the anterior part of the body and three permanent teeth: left lateral incisor, canine and first molar. Estimates based on tooth eruption of modern humans, as well as occlusal wear and root development, suggest an age at death of between 12.5 and 14.5 yea

Preventing toothbrush abrasion and the efficacy of the Alert toothbrush: a review and patient study.

The literature recognizes two etiologies for periodontal attachment loss. On a statistical basis, bacterial periodontal disease causes attachment loss interproximally, while trauma, or self-inflicted periodontal disease, causes attachment loss on the buccal and lingual tooth surfaces. One study shows that the prevalence of attachment loss caused by abrasion is only slightly less than the attachment loss caused by bacterial periodontal disease. While the clinical community focuses on the prevention and treatment of bacterial disease, a large percentage of periodontal attachment loss (caused by

Dentinogenesis imperfecta type II: ultrastructure of teeth in sagittal sections.

The morphological abnormalities of the teeth of patients affected by dentinogenesis imperfecta type 2 (DI-II) may underlie the difficulties … structural changes responsible for the lower enamel's hardness and resistance to attrition, and for tooth wear, while the structural changes in the dentin may explain the failure of some adhesive restorative materials. This SEM study thus revealed structural defects which underlie the problems of attrition and restoration loss found in patients with this gen …

Periodontitis and angular alveolar lesions: a critical distinction.

Modern anthropologic and epidemiologic studies reveal that the incidence of periodontitis is low in both ancient and modern populations. The distribution of plaque and gingivitis has little or no correlation with the distribution of pathologic alveolar bone loss or with periodontitis. The assumption that a distance from cementoenamel junction to alveolar crest (CEJ-AC distance) greater than 2 mm equates with disease overlooks the interrelationship between the CEJ-AC distance and continuous eruption in compensation for tooth wear and growth of the lower face height. Anatomic, physiologic, and p…

Incidence of caries and abscesses in archeological Eskimo skeletal samples from Point Hope and Kodiak Island, Alaska.

The incidence of caries and abscesses in 246 archeologically derived skeletal specimens from the Ipiutak and Tigara levels at Point Hope, Alaska, and 79 specimens excavated from Jones Point, Kodiak Island, Alaska were investigated. All three collections span long periods of time. Only pre-white contact specimens were used. Each specimen was sexed and aged in five year groupings, using standard techniques. Caries and abscesses were recorded by type and degree of severity and correlated with age, sex, and site of origin. All samples displayed very low caries rates and few abscesses per tooth and

Combined periodontal and restorative approach to the treatment of gingival recessions with noncarious cervical lesions: a case treated with acellular dermal matrix allograft and compomer restorations.

Treatment of gingival recessions has become one of the most challenging procedures in periodontal plastic surgery. Various surgical options with predictable outcomes are available, but in cases with cervical lesions or restorations, optimal functional and esthetic results may require the combination of periodontal and restorative procedures. In this case report, one patient treated with acellular dermal matrix allograft and a coronally positioned flap in combination with compomer cervical restorations is presented. Clinical parameters were recorded immediately prior to surgery and after 12 mon

Investigation of the presence of Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) in ancient adult skulls: analyzing data from prehistoric and historical samples through a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Historically, the prevalence of caries has undergone significant changes, particularly increasing with the industrialization of sugar consumption. When examining ancient populations, lower caries rates are discovered, attributed in part to dietary factors. These populations consumed abrasive foods, leading to occlusal wear and reduced non-axial occlusal forces, potentially influencing Non-Carious Cervical Lesions (NCCLs). Although some attribute NCCLs to abfraction, the mechanism remains debated. This systematic review aims to evaluate the presence of NCCLs in ancient populations,

Effect of bite force and diet composition on craniofacial diversification of Southern South American human populations.

Ecological factors can be important to shape the patterns of morphological variation among human populations. Particularly, diet plays a fundamental role in craniofacial variation due to both the effect of the nutritional status-mostly dependent on the type and amount of nutrients consumed-on skeletal growth and the localized effects of masticatory forces. We examine these two dimensions of diet and evaluate their influence on morphological diversification of human populations from southern South America during the late Holocene. Cranial morphology was measured as 3D coordinates defining the f
