Political debate regarding trans youth's access to gender-affirming care (GAC) has pushed many to advocate for GAC by pointing to tragic, pathological outcomes of non-treatment, namely suicide. However, these pathologized arguments are a harmful ethical "shortcut" which should be replaced by a meaningful engagement with the ethics of providing GAC to youth.

Many transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals will be considering gender-affirming treatments during their reproductive lifespan. These medically necessary treatments have a negative impact on reproductive potential. All TGD individuals should be counseled regarding fertility. Options for fertility preservation for individuals who have undergone puberty include mature oocyte, embryo, and sperm cryopreservation. In prepubertal individuals, ovarian tissue cryopreservation may be considered, but testicular tissue cryopreservation remains experimental only. While there have been advances i

How gender-affirming treatments (GAT) influence the experienced sexuality of transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary (TGNB) individuals remains understudied. The aim of this research was to discern factors contributing to a satisfying sexual experience for TGNB individuals, explore the influence of GAT on this process, and identify potential areas for improvement in transition-related care. We conducted interviews with 21 participants at various stages of GAT. Participants identified as (trans)men (12), (trans)women (7), transgender (1), and genderqueer/gender non-conforming/non-bin

Conflicting evidence exists about the risk of breast cancer in transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) patients treated with testosterone. This review aimed to summarize current knowledge regarding the risk of breast cancer associated with gender-affirming testosterone treatment (GATT). A systematic literature search using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis checklist was conducted in January 2023 through Ovid, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. English-language, peer-reviewed articles evaluating breast cancer in TGD patients after GATT that met the inclusion

A sex-data gap, from testing primarily males, results in a lack of scientific knowledge for other groups (females, transgender individuals). It is unknown whether typical recruitment and participant characterization causes incorrect statistical decisions, and three factors were evaluated: 1) underrepresenting cisgender females, 2) recruiting small sample sizes, 3) misgendering. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003-2004) were evaluated for sex differences after removing missing values (N = 3,645; F = 1,763). Disparities were determined by utilizing sample sizes c

BACKGROUND: Gender dysphoria is characterised by a sense of distress because of discordance between the self-perception of gender identity and the assigned sex. Hormonal treatment of transgender males uses testosterone to induce and preserve masculinisation.
OBJECTIVE: The study investigated the safety of testosterone therapy in transgender males.
METHODS: The present study used a retrospective file review of transgender male subjects who were treated with testosterone (initially transdermal testosterone gel and subsequently parenteral testosterone undecanoate) for at least 18 months and had

BACKGROUND: We systematically reviewed the literature and performed a meta-analysis on the effects of speech therapy and phonosurgery, for transgender women, in relation to the fundamental frequency gain of the voice, regarding the type of vocal sample collected, and we compared the effectiveness of the treatments. In addition, the study design, year, country, types of techniques used, total therapy time, and vocal assessment protocols were analyzed.
METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Lilacs, and SciELO databases for observational studies and clinical trials, published in English, Portuguese, o

OBJECTIVE: To assess the reported changes in orgasm quality and function of transgender men (TM) and transgender women (TW) after commencing gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT).
METHODS: We queried potential changes in orgasm function before and after commencing GAHT (minimum 1 year) among 130 consecutive TW and 33 TM. We queried the following domains under a uniform condition (masturbation): (1) Lead-time to reach orgasm, (2) Duration of orgasm, (3) Body location of orgasm sensation, (4) Description of orgasm as either a single or multiple-peak event, (5) Duration of post-orgasm refracto

There is a pressing need for greater understanding and focus on cancer survivorship and informal cancer caring of trans people (binary and non-binary), across tumor types, to inform culturally safe trans inclusive cancer information and care. This qualitative study, part of the mixed methods Out with Cancer project, examined experiences of trans embodiment and identity after cancer diagnosis and treatment. We drew on open-ended survey responses from 63 trans cancer survivors and 23 trans cancer carers, as well as interviews and a photo-elicitation activity with a subset of 22 participants (15

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the anatomical elements that allow safe and predictable performance of fronto orbital surgery for facial feminization. The primary objective of this study was to analyze the characteristics (dimensions, pneumatization rate, and anterior wall thickness) of the frontal sinus in MtF transgender patients. The secondary objective was to establish reproducible criteria for CT measurements that could guide preoperative planning of frontal impaction in feminization frontoplasty (FF).
MATERIALS: Fifty preoperative facial mass scans of FF surgery patients were includ

Terminology describing transgender and gender diverse identities has evolved over the past 80 years, becoming progressively less pathologizing and less stigmatizing. While transgender health care no longer uses terms such as gender identity disorder or classifies gender dysphoria as a mental health condition, the term gender incongruence continues to be a source of oppression. An all-encompassing term, if one can be found, might be experienced by some as either empowering or abusive. This article draws on historical perspectives to suggest how clinicians might use diagnostic and intervention l

Few transgender-specific cancer screening recommendations exist. This review aims to cover current guidelines and practice patterns of cancer screening in transgender patients and, where evidence-based data are lacking, to draw from cisgender screening guidelines to suggest best practices for transgender patients based on anatomic inventory. Sufficient evidence does not exist to determine the long-term effects of gender-affirming hormone therapy on cancer risk. In the future, cancer screening and prevention should be focused on anatomic inventory and high-risk behaviors.

Transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) patients are a population with unique urologic needs that are often overlooked in urologic training. Most urology residents think that learning to take care of this population is important in their training; however, there is much variation in this educational content within urology residency programs. This review provides information on the current state of teaching regarding the unique needs of caring for TGNB patients as urologists and overviews some basic principles that every urologist should know.

The visibility and care of transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people is an important component of gynecology. Transmasculine individuals require routine gynecologic and preventative care. Guidelines can be extrapolated from the cisgender female population, and using affirming language, acknowledging the challenges patients face with pelvic examination, and discussing individual gynecologic needs are important components of care. Transmasculine patients may seek hysterectomy for gender affirmation from gynecologists. Unique nuances exist in the considerations needed when preparing for hystere
