van der Waals (vdW) antiferromagnetic semiconductors combine electromagnetic control of device responses with the desirable advantages of antiferromagnets, including high switching speed and stability under stray magnetic fields. Of particular interest is FePS3 due to its unique combination of semiconducting behavior and highly anisotropic magnetic properties with metamagnetic transitions exceeding 30 T. Here, we demonstrate gate-tunable magnetotransport in FePS3 over a wide operating temperature range from 5 to 300 K by using vdW materials for all components in a field-effect transistor geome

Harnessing atomic ordering through order-disorder transition is a powerful strategy to tailor electric polarization and functionality. However, most reported order-disorder ferroelectrics exhibit low Curie temperatures, narrow thermal hysteresis, and limited tunability, restricting their potential in nonvolatile memory technologies. Here, we identify VOCl2 as a new van der Waals order-disorder ferroelectric with site disorder, exhibiting an exceptionally wide thermal hysteresis (ΔT = 220 K) and a high Curie temperature (Tc = 440 K), associated with lattice expansion across the disorder to orde

Functional spin crossover (SCO) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold promise for miniaturized spin-based devices due to their tuneable molecule-based properties near room temperature. SCO describes the phenomenon where transition metal ions switch between high spin (HS) and low spin (LS) states upon external stimuli. However, even simple guest molecules like water can significantly alter the properties of these materials. Understanding the interplay between SCO and these molecules is therefore crucial. This work investigates this interplay in a fascinating 3D Fe(II) SCO-MOF, recently reported

Atomic migration behavior in reactive atmospheres, especially the competitive mechanism between short- and long-range transport, is vital to determine the stability and performance of alloy nanomaterials. In this work, taking hollow Fe3Pt7 nanochains as a model system, in situ scanning electron microscopy and molecular dynamics simulations were combined to reveal the effects of annealing temperature and reaction atmosphere on the structure evolution. Vacuum annealing from room temperature to 900 °C results in size compression, pore formation, collapse of the hollow structure, and phase transit

Elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) are a family of recombinant biopolymers that offer precise sequence control. Six ELP sequences with systematically varied hydrophobicity and charge were designed to investigate how hydrophobicity and charge influence dilute solution phase behavior in 0-40 mol % ethanol and 0-200 mM sodium chloride. Both hydrophobic and hydrophilic ELPs in this study display four characteristic regimes in their phase diagrams: lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-like transitions at low ethanol concentrations, a one-phase region at low-to-moderate ethanol concentrations, u

Understanding how molecular structure governs photoinduced spin evolution in organic diradicals is essential for the rational design of spin-responsive molecular materials. Here, we investigate temperature-dependent excited-state relaxation dynamics of syn- and anti-indenoindenodibenzothiophene (IIDBT) diradicaloids using variable-temperature steady-state and transient absorption spectroscopies. Vibronic progressions in the high-energy, nonfrontier-orbital π-π* transition absorptions and low-energy frontier-orbital transition absorptions prompt strong couplings between electronic excitation, o

At low temperatures, glasses exhibit distinctive properties compared to crystalline solids. A notable example is the phonon echo, a phenomenon that motivated the two-level-system (TLS) model. This model has successfully explained many universal anomalies in glasses. Here, we extend the TLS framework to a multilevel system and show that phonon echoes persist when nonlinear energy structures and disorder are included. By incorporating virtual phonon exchange, we introduce many-body interactions between these multilevel systems, leading to nonequidistant energy spacings that enhance the echo sign

Localized chemotherapy represents a promising strategy for enhancing tumor-targeted drug delivery while minimizing systemic toxicity. In this study, we investigated thermosensitive hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)-based hydrogels for the prolonged localized delivery of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The sol-gel transition temperature of the formulations was modulated within the physiological range (32-37) using Hofmeister salts. Rheological analysis revealed that 5-FU alone decreased the gelation temperature of HPMC from 47 ± 0.8 °C to 44 ± 0.7 °C due to the competitive disruption of polymer hydra…

RATIONALE: According to the mass spectrometry (MS) design principles, the ions generated in an atmospheric pressure ion source must pass through a narrow-bore capillary in order to maintain the needed system vacuum pressure. The ion transmission efficiency through the inlet capillary is one of the key factors directly influencing the analytical performance of MS. Its design and operating parameters, including inner diameter, length, temperature, and those related to the ion source operation, can alter ion diffusion losses, gas flow dynamics, and space-charge effects both around and inside the

UNLABELLED: High-temperature heat pumps (HTHPs) are a key technology for enabling the decarbonization of industrial process heat up to about 200 °C and for generating steam. This paper reviews the state of the art in HTHP technologies, presents case studies from Europe, and discusses their potential applications in New Zealand. Industrial sectors such as dairy, food processing, and chemicals are identified as particularly relevant due to their substantial demand for low- to medium-temperature heat. Case studies from European demonstration projects demonstrate the successful integration of HTHP

Structurally ordered Pt-based intermetallic compounds (IMCs) are crucial for developing high-performance fuel cells but remain notoriously difficult to synthesize at low temperature due to the formidable kinetic barriers of solid-state atomic diffusion. Herein, we overcome this long-standing challenge via a binary salt matrix (KCl-Na2HPO4) strategy that drives disorder-to-order phase transition of carbon-supported Pt3Co catalysts. Mechanistic studies suggest that in-situ generated Na4P2O7 in binary salt matrix contributes to the partial removal of surface CoO, thereby weakening the surface oxi

Bonding aromatic ring to carbonyl group is recognized as crucial for promoting intersystem crossing (ISC) owing to allowed 1nπ* → 3ππ* or 1ππ* → 3nπ* transition. The effect of charge transfer (CT) in such systems, however, is largely ignored for understanding ISC and phosphorescence efficiency. Here, we unveiled a principle for producing highly-efficient room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) polymer where the role of CT in diarylketone phosphors was a prerequisite. Designed diarylketones with carbonyl group substituted by aromatic rings unsymmetrically achieved superior RTP quantum yield of >

Recent superconducting transition temperatures (T c) over 100 K for monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 have renewed interest in the bulk parent compound. In KCl:AlCl3 flux-transport-grown crystals of FeSe0.94Be0.06, FeSe0.97Be0.03 and, for comparison, FeSe, this work reports doping of FeSe using Be-among the smallest of possible dopants, corresponding to an effective 'chemical pressure'. According to lattice parameter measurements, 6% Be doping shrank the tetragonal FeSe lattice equivalent to a physical pressure of 0.75 GPa. Using this flux-transport method of sample preparation, 6% of Be was the maximu…

The dual level direct dynamic study is carried out for the reactions of CF₃CH=CH₂, CF₃CF=CH₂ and CF₃CF=CF₂ with hydroxyl radicals. The dynamic calculations are performed using the variational transition state theory (VTST) with interpolated single-point energies (ISPE) method at M06-2X/MG3S//M06-2X/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory. All the possible reactions such as abstraction and addition-elimination pathways are explored for the title reactions. The "Reshotko-Tumin transition criterion" based on optimal transient growth successfully correlates laboratory measurements of roughness induced transition over blunt body configurations. Even though transient growth has not been conclusively linked to the measured onset of transition, the above correlation denotes the only available physics-based model for subcritical transition in blunt body flows, since the latter do not support any modal instabilities at typical experimental conditions. Unlike other established models based on empirical curve fits that are valid for a specific subclass of

Droplet interface bilayers (DIBs) serve as a convenient platform to study interactions between synthetic lipid membranes and proteins. However, a majority of DIBs have been assembled using a single lipid type, diphytanoylphosphatidylcholine (DPhPC). The work described herein establishes a new method to assemble DIBs using total lipid extract from Escherichia coli (eTLE); it is found that incubating oil-submerged aqueous droplets containing eTLE liposomes at a temperature above the gel-fluid phase transition temperature (Tg) promotes monolayer self-assembly that does not occur below Tg. Once mo…

Controlling and manipulating temperature at the nanoscale hold substantial promise for advancing applications such as photothermal therapy, nanoscale chemical reactions, and micro/nanodevices. However, current temperature regulation methods predominantly rely on continuously tunable optical parameters (e.g., wavelength and polarization), which limit discrete and digitally addressable control states and result in insufficient degrees of freedom for tailoring local temperature distributions. The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light offers a novel perspective for light-near-field thermal inter
